Chapter 14: Chapter 14: Tears of Justice

2000 years later:

"Lady Furina, Lady Furina!" A forceful knock echoed through the door as Clorinde stepped in, her presence as commanding as ever.

Furina quickly wiped a tear from her cheek, her expression shifting seamlessly into her usual dramatic flair.

"Did you need something, Clorinde?" she asked, her tone dripping with the theatricality she was known for, the same mask she always wore to hide her vulnerability.

"There's a trial underway, Lady Furina" Clorinde reminded her sharply.

Furina blinked, jolting back to the present. "Oh, right!" she exclaimed, quickly gathering herself. She hastily adjusted her blue hat, placing it atop her hair where the white and blue streaks framed her face. With purposeful steps, she made her way toward the Opera Epiclese, where her presence was eagerly awaited.

As she stepped onto the grand stage, she paused, her gaze sweeping over the audience. She offered them a dramatic, almost theatrical glance. "Good evening, my subjects," she began, her voice smooth and composed, yet laced with a subtle authority. "My sincerest apologies for my tardiness." A pause, just long enough to pique their curiosity. "But, if you must know, I was… handling matters of Fontaine."

With that, she made her way to her seat, settling into place, her eyes now fixed on the trial that was about to unfold before her.

"Now that Lady Furina is here, let the trial begin," a voice echoed with authority. The man spoke in a calm yet commanding tone, his cane striking the ground with a sharp, deliberate slam. It was Chief Justice Neuvillette, standing tall and composed, his presence commanding the room. His gaze, unwavering and dignified, remained fixed on the proceedings as he stood from his seat, exuding the weight of his position.

The trial continued, and Furina remained fixated on the proceedings, striving to maintain her composure. Yet, despite her best efforts, exhaustion clung to her like a heavy fog. She was so tired—utterly, overwhelmingly tired.

"This is a lie! My client's coffee doesn't contain such chemicals in his drinks!" one side argued.

The prosecutor and defense immediately began to clash, their voices rising in heated exchange.

Neuvillette raised a hand, his voice calm but firm. "Enough. You will each take turns presenting your case. Continue."

"My client has uncovered a chemical compound that is explicitly illegal in Fontaine due to its side effects. Here are the test results," the prosecutor stated, presenting the documents.

"Those results are fake, I tell you!" the coffee shop owner shouted, his voice trembling with anger.

"Silence in the court, or you will be removed, Mr. Barista," Neuvillette said, his voice cold and authoritative.

The Barista gulped, his eyes widening, and quickly closed his mouth.

As the trial drew to a close, Neuvillette's voice rang out, steady and firm. "I find Mr. Barista guilty," he declared. "He is to pay a sum of approximately 1,000,000 mora as compensation." His words carried the finality of justice, leaving no room for dispute.

Finally, the trial came to an end. Furina let out a dramatic sigh, her voice laced with a touch of flair. "Ah, my sweet subjects, now that the trial is over, I must take my leave," she declared with theatrical urgency, her words almost a whisper before she dashed off, her movements swift and graceful as she hurried away.

Neuvillette kept a careful eye on her as she left, letting out a sigh of his own.

Fontaine was alive with breathtaking sights—elegant buildings gleaming in the soft glow of the setting sun, canals shimmering with a delicate sparkle, and the soft murmur of distant conversations blending with the sound of water. The city seemed to breathe with beauty, but Furina was a blur, darting through the streets without a word, her gaze fixed ahead.

Clorinde sprinted by her side, ever watchful, her presence a silent shield. She moved swiftly, ensuring no harm would come to the goddess as they weaved through the bustling crowd, her eyes scanning for any potential threats.

Furina rushed through the grand halls of the Court of Fontaine, her steps echoing sharply against the marble floors. She made her way swiftly to her office, where she turned to Clorinde with a determined look. "I'll be busy handling paperwork," she said briskly. "You can leave me to it."

Clorinde nodded in response, her gaze lingering for a moment before she turned and exited the room, leaving Furina to her duties.

As the door closed behind her, tears welled up in Furina's eyes, falling one by one, staining her cheeks before dripping onto the floor. She sank to her knees, her sobs quiet yet heavy, the weight of them pressing down on her.

Just as her tears slowed, a soft meow interrupted the stillness.

Furina's head snapped up, her eyes lighting up with a spark of warmth. "Oh, my sweet pumpkin pie," she murmured, reaching down to scoop up the cat. The tension melted from her face as she hugged the small, purring creature. "Come here, you're so cute," she giggled, the sound soft and tender.

A knock at the door broke the moment.

"Lady Furina, we need your assistance with an important matter," a voice called from outside.

Furina's smile faded as she exhaled a heavy sigh. Her shoulders straightened, and the weight of her title settled back onto her. She was no mere mortal, no fragile being. She was the Hydro Archon—goddess of Fontaine—and she had a role to play. The mask of authority slid back into place, and she rose to her feet, ready to face whatever came next.
