Chapter 404: Chapter 404: The Superpower User
Countermeasure Bureau Training Center.
"Morris Kent," David Watson looked at the document in his hand, "a superpower user with the ability to teleport. Rating: A-class. Is there a mistake? We're just a C-class squad; how did we get assigned an A-class ability user?"
"It's said that the Superpower Development Research Center made a breakthrough two months ago. Now, A-class ability users aren't that big of a deal anymore." The instructor next to him said, "Anyway, your squad has been short-staffed for three months now. The magic disaster tasks ahead are more dangerous than ever; you must replenish your team."
"I'd rather you gave me two D-class veterans. This guy just awakened his abilities last month, and it's this kind of skill-based one," David was somewhat reluctant, "Just one month, he probably hasn't even figured out his abilities yet. I don't want to lead a newbie."
"Bullshit, who wasn't a newbie a year ago!" the instructor cursed, "When you first encountered the Chimera beast, didn't you also wet your pants from fear?"
"That was ages ago," David Watson was a bit embarrassed, "Don't keep bringing up those things."
"Not ages, just a year! Alright, enough talk, do you want this person or not?" the instructor became impatient, "I'll have you know, Draco Malfoy personally reached out to me to get this high-level talent for you."
"Draco, huh," David remembered the platinum-haired wizard boy he had teamed up with, "How is he doing?"
"He's a wizard, core combat power, and also talented. It's said he's now become an S-class Special Investigator, transferred to headquarters. But he still remembers you. He even asked me to ask you, do you want to go to headquarters?"
"Me? I'm just a werewolf transformation ability cannon fodder. What am I going to do at headquarters? Get thrown into those high-level missions to fight those demonized monsters to the death? Seeking death?"
"There are a few vacancies for instructors at headquarters. As one of the first members of the Countermeasure Bureau, your qualifications are old enough. If recommended by an S-class investigator, there shouldn't be any problems."
"…" David Watson was silent for a while, "Forget it, I still have something unfinished here."
"Are you talking about avenging Philip?" the instructor asked.
David Watson frowned. Philip was the first newcomer he had led after becoming a team captain, a C-class giant werewolf ability user. Two months after joining the team, he was sacrificed during a mission.
And the murderer who killed him was not taken down.
"Sigh, Philip was just unlucky. You're just a C-class team; theoretically, the missions you get should only deal with ordinary magic disaster events, eliminating merpeople, exterminating Red Caps, but things related to evil gods, sometimes even S-class teams face danger."
"Philip's death is not your fault; you don't need to blame yourself too much," the instructor said.
"I've long since let it go," David Watson said, "And avenging that kid by finding that evil god? I'm not crazy. Forget it, let's not talk about this. I'll go meet this Morris. You're right; we do need to replenish our manpower."
...
"The winner, Morris!"
Watching the row of fire-constructed big words emerge in the void, Morris revealed a smug smile and exited the "Holographic Simulation."
The muscular man across from him also took off his full-cover helmet, looking at him with a complicated gaze, eventually stepping forward, slapping a few crumpled bills in front of him, and turning to leave.
"Ha ha, thanks for your patronage, welcome again." Morris teased.
The muscular man stiffened but ultimately didn't dare say anything and walked straight away.
The Holographic Simulation is called a simulation, but its restoration of the environment and the physical status and abilities of both sides is 100%. If you lose in the Holographic Simulation, you would lose just the same in a real fight.
"This is the strength of an A-class superpower user. His teleportation almost has no cooldown. The enemy can't even touch him before being shot into a sieve. How can you even play against that?"
"Hmph, what's A-class? He's skill-based, far inferior to an all-around ability. If there's an ability user who can harden their body, even being hit wouldn't break their defense, what use is his fast teleportation then?"
"Damn, had I known that the later you awaken, the stronger the ability, I wouldn't have applied to join the Countermeasure Bureau so early!" someone complained.
"Who knew the research center's progress on superpowers would be so fast!" someone agreed, "I heard they used a time acceleration device to speed up research. While we spend a day outside, those experts have already spent half a year."
"Be content. The stronger the ability, the more likely you are to get higher-level missions. I don't want to encounter any demonized Krakens or anything. It's said that as the magic revival level gets higher and higher, some magical creatures might even become divine. Even S-class investigators are likely to fall when encountering them."
"Last time I saw a Nidhogg's head in the headquarters' exhibition room, it was as big as a truck, and an eyeball was taller than a person. That thing must have become divine."
"I'm planning to sign up for the research institute's second awakening program." someone said, "Although they say there's a 5% chance of genetic disorder, I still want to become stronger. Not all missions will match your ability level; sometimes headquarters can't even judge the specific level of the mission."
"Especially events involving the worship of evil gods, those evil gods have learned to disguise themselves. Magic detection satellites aren't omnipotent; it's hard to accurately assess the level of power involved in such events. If you're unlucky, a C-class team might also encounter an evil god worship event. Two months ago…"
"Hey, stop talking, look behind."
The person who was speaking stopped when they saw the person who walked in from the door.
The unfortunate main character of an evil god worship event came to Morris's side, "Morris Kent?"
Morris was exchanging the cash in his hand for electronic currency with the bar's owner. The Bank of England had just launched an electronic payment method last month, very convenient. Although many people were still hesitating, Morris liked it very much because it allowed for direct internet payments, enabling the purchase of goods and services thousands of miles away. It was really cool.
"Who are you?"
"C-class Investigation Team Chimera Squad Captain David Watson. Your superior." David said, "You've been recruited by us. Come with me, newbie."
"C-class?" Morris frowned, "I applied for an A-class team."
"That means you're not qualified yet, rookie." A brown-skinned, curvaceous woman behind David disdainfully said.
"Is that so?" Morris also revealed a disdainful smile, "What's your level? How about a round in the Holographic Simulation? If you win, I'll admit I'm a rookie. But if you lose, go back where you came from. C-class team, huh, I
don't want to stay in such a trash team."
"You little..." The woman was instantly furious, rolling up her sleeves, ready to come up and hit someone, but was held back by David.
He glanced at the wall where the replay of the Holographic Simulation battle was shown, then looked at the rankings next to it, "You seem to be good at Holographic Simulation? Fine, I'll play a round with you."
Morris, seeing how straightforward the other party was, hesitated a bit, "You already know my ability, but I don't know yours. That's not fair."
David sat down, "Giant werewolf, C-class."
