Harry Potter: Becoming a Study God

Chapter 184: Chapter 184: The Second "Journey" with Dumbledore

At 8 p.m., Wade arrived outside the Headmaster's office, where the grotesque stone gargoyle tilted its head and stared at him.

"Cream biscuits," Wade said.

The stone beast stepped aside, revealing the path upward. Wade ascended the spiral staircase, which moved slowly, eventually bringing him to the oak door adorned with a brass knocker.

He knocked lightly on the knocker, and the door quietly swung open. Stepping inside, he found Dumbledore bent over and examining something on a large desk in front of him. And the Sorting Hat was resting nearby.

The walls were lined with portraits of former headmasters, who were noisily chattering amongst themselves when Wade entered.

The moment the door opened, all the voices fell silent, and the portraits turned their attention to him.

If not for the ever-burning candles that filled the bright room with warmth, the scene might have seemed a bit eerie.

Dumbledore's phoenix, Fawkes, perched on the brass ring holding one of the candles. Compared to last year, Fawkes appeared aged and frail, with sparse feathers and an air of impending death.

"Oh, Wade, right on time," Dumbledore said as he straightened up. "Come here quickly—I've acquired a fascinating little toy today."

"Good evening, Professor Dumbledore. What is this?"

Wade stepped closer to the desk and was surprised to see several Pocket magic pets resting upon it.

There were miniature versions of a phoenix, a fire dragon, a Pegasus, and a Runespoor. Some were drinking water, others playing, while a few simply rested. Each creature had its own intricately crafted nest.

Sharing their space was a tiny wizard, wearing a pointed hat, living among them. Next to him stood a whimsical mushroom-shaped house, complete with a chimney puffing faint wisps of white smoke.

It felt as though they were part of a real, miniature countryside.

At the moment, the tiny wizard was arguing with the fire dragon:

Fire Dragon: "Move over a bit, I don't have enough space!"

Wizard: "I was here first. You move over there!"

Fire Dragon: "You don't need that much space! Just squeeze a little!"

Wizard: "Fine, fine! Take all the space, why don't you!"

With an angry huff, the thumb-sized wizard stormed to the side. The fire dragon sheepishly grinned and moved closer to apologize.

The Runespoor joined in, trying to mediate:

Runespoor: "Alright, alright, don't fight. It's not our fault; it's just that our owner gave us such a small space to live in. If it were bigger, none of us would need to squabble."

"If I were rich, I'd want a nest made of gold," the phoenix said gloomily. "This wooden house always feels like it's about to catch fire. I'm too scared to move."

"ZZZ..." the Pegasus snored softly, oblivious.

"Don't give the owner a hard time!" the fire dragon protested. "It's not his fault if he doesn't have money. He's already trying his best to give us a good home. Don't be sad, Master—I still love you!"

The fire dragon craned its neck up to speak to Dumbledore and even politely nodded at Wade. "Hello, little wizard."

Dumbledore couldn't help but laugh. He stroked his elegant beard, which was tied with a small bow.

"Look at these adorable little creatures. They've brought so much joy to my life," Dumbledore said. "I heard this was your invention?"

"Yes," Wade answered curtly.

"Remarkable work, Wade… absolutely delightful. Even Fawkes and the Sorting Hat enjoy their company—they could chat with these little fellows all day," Dumbledore mused, a slight look of exasperation crossing his face.

"Though they're always hinting that I should buy them things. Do you have any solutions for that?"

"…I'm sorry, Professor," Wade replied. "A pet's personality is set during its creation. It's not impossible to change, but doing so would effectively mean killing the current version."

Hearing this, the miniature pets immediately scurried back to their houses. The Runespoor retreated, leaving only its backside visible. The fire dragon and the little wizard, who had been lying on the lawn arguing moments ago, clung to each other, trembling.

They looked up at the two humans with terrified, pleading eyes.

"N-no… please…" the wizard stammered. "I don't want to die…"

The fire dragon frantically nodded in agreement.

"In that case, let's leave it as is," Dumbledore said with a chuckle. "Honestly, their miserly personalities are quite entertaining."

The pets collectively sighed in relief and soon resumed their carefree play.

"Ravenclaw suits you, doesn't it?" the Sorting Hat suddenly spoke up.

"I still remember the moment you told me you wanted to be in Hufflepuff. But I knew I placed you in the best house, Wade Gry. You're a born Ravenclaw."

"Thank you," Wade replied dryly. **"But I'm sure I would have achieved just as much in Hufflepuff. Knowledge doesn't change based on the house you're sorted into."

The Sorting Hat fell silent, its pointed tip twitching as if deep in thought, trying to come up with a rebuttal.

Fawkes abruptly let out a raucous squawk, almost as if mocking the Sorting Hat. Several feathers fell from its tail, and Wade casually caught them and placed them on the desk.

"Keep them," Dumbledore said. "Phoenix tail feathers are incredibly valuable, whether for crafting wands, brewing potions, or alchemical work. Don't be fooled by how frail Fawkes looks; even now, its tail feathers hold immense power."

"Thank you, Professor. And thank you, too, Fawkes."

Wade didn't pretend to refuse out of politeness. He carefully put the phoenix feathers away, already imagining the rare potions and alchemical products they could help create.

"No need for thanks," Dumbledore replied. "I look forward to seeing what other surprises and changes you might bring. I imagine Terrence feels the same way."

Terrence is Professor Murray's first name.

"Is there something specific you wanted to discuss, Professor?" Wade asked.

He hadn't deliberately reviewed his recent actions, but he had mentally prepared himself before coming here.

Considering the burn marks in Little Hangleton had already made the papers, it was unlikely such news had escaped Dumbledore's notice.

The old headmaster had recently taken Wade on a trip to that very place, and soon after, the Gaunt shack was set ablaze. It was only natural for suspicions to arise.

Alternatively, perhaps Lupin had pieced together the secret of the Horcruxes from their recent missions and reported it to Dumbledore out of caution.

Lupin had once been a member of the Order of the Phoenix, and it was only logical that he would trust Dumbledore more than Wade. Wade could understand that perfectly well.

Resting a hand on the edge of the desk in a relaxed posture, Wade waited for an explanation.

Dumbledore gave a calm smile and said kindly, "I imagine you still recall our last visit to that old acquaintance?"

"Of course," Wade nodded. "Voldemort's backstory left a deep impression. It's remarkable—and ironic—that someone of mixed blood would so vehemently advocate for pure-blood supremacy."

"That's because he despises the part of himself that is Muggle," Dumbledore explained. "At the same time, he uses that ideology to attract like-minded followers and build his power base."

"Then why not publicly expose his true heritage in the papers?" Wade asked. "His followers constantly trumpet the glory of pure-bloods. If they found out their master was actually of mixed blood..."

Wade trailed off, but the implication was clear.

Dumbledore chuckled, his deep blue eyes twinkling with amusement and something akin to affection, as if Wade were a naive but endearing child.

Wade pressed his lips together, realizing he had asked a rather naive question.

"Few people know that Voldemort's real name was Tom Riddle," Dumbledore began. "But in truth, he has never gone out of his way to hide his heritage."

"His earliest followers, including the core Death Eaters, are all aware of his shameful origins and his Muggle father. They also know he personally killed his father."

"Voldemort himself doesn't shy away from mentioning these things. He relies on his immense magical power to win over his followers. He considers himself superior by nature and views Muggles as an entirely separate, inferior species."

"This fact hasn't unsettled the Death Eaters. They simply choose never to speak of Voldemort's mixed heritage and even propagate the lie that he is a pure-blood descendant of Slytherin. This is to protect their leader from any perceived stain."

"Voldemort uses the ideology of pure-blood superiority to govern wizards who reject Muggle-borns. That's his philosophy. But today, I'd like to take you to meet another old acquaintance."

Dumbledore extended his hand toward Wade.

"Are you ready for another journey, Wade?"
