Chapter 23: ch-23
A cat, being a cute animal that students love to keep as pets, can kill its prey for fun. They kill for amusement, while my snake only attacks for food or self-defense. But of course, cats are seen as less "evil" because they're more appealing. They're just animals—they aren't born evil; they simply are what they are. Jet can't help having fangs and no legs.
Since Jet entered my life, he has not only always been by my side but has also been a loyal friend who has never harmed me or anyone else. Yet, apparently, just owning him makes me evil, and everyone wants me to get rid of my familiar (yes, he is my familiar) because that supposedly makes me a dark wizard. I've been told my parents sacrificed themselves for me. If that's true, I highly doubt they gave their lives just so the public could judge me for an ability I never asked for.
Everyone seems to look up to me because I'm a "hero," but apparently, saving an entire country and many lives means nothing if people can call me evil simply for having a familiar they don't like. I'm an eleven-year-old boy, not the next Merlin or a miniature Dark Lord. I just want to finish school, get an education, and make friends like any normal kid.
Thank you.
I can't help but agree with Mr. Potter. The poor boy lived with abusive guardians his entire life, only to come to a new world where everyone tells him that the only friend he's ever had is evil. Let's not forget, they're saying this about his familiar. For those who don't know, when witches and wizards bond with a familiar, they form a magical connection, and it's illegal to even attempt to separate them. I ask you, members of the wizarding world, to think about what we've really done for the boy who saved our world.
On the night You-Know-Who fell, we all celebrated, while Harry Potter was sent to a home where he was mistreated and only discovered the magical world and the truth about himself when it was time to attend Hogwarts. A world that judges him based on his familiar (which has been confirmed by two Hogwarts staff members, one of whom is Albus Dumbledore)—is that the support and gratitude our "savior" deserves?
Fortunately, despite the wizarding world's considerable failures, Harry Potter has grown into a remarkable young man. Reports suggest he is not only an excellent student but also a mature and heroic boy. During a flying lesson incident with first-years, a girl lost control of her broom and began flying uncontrollably at a dangerous height. Mr. Potter didn't hesitate to rush to her aid, and when she fell from her broom, he managed to catch her in a risky dive before she hit the ground.
After bravely risking his life to save the girl, he was awarded points by Madam Hooch, who then escorted the injured student to the hospital wing. It was reported that one boy, Ronald Weasley, decided to make an offensive remark, saying he couldn't believe Mr. Potter was rewarded for "saving another snake." The other Slytherins had much to say about this.
"—Weasley is a tactless idiot. He's been telling everyone that Potter is a dark wizard just because he has a snake and is a Slytherin, but Harry rightly pointed out that since coming to Hogwarts, it's Weasley who has been behaving inappropriately, constantly shouting and pointing fingers at us Slytherins. Harry just saved a girl's life, and Weasley was complaining about our house earning points. The question is clear: who is the real dark wizard?"
"—I'm Harry's roommate, and his snake has never bothered me. He's never tried to attack me or anyone else. Most of the time, he just lies there, occasionally hissing. Jet is a peaceful animal, doesn't make loud noises, and doesn't leave messes everywhere. As for Harry, he's a brilliant wizard who studies spells ahead of everyone else and is quite clever. I'll admit, when Weasley made his comment, I was very close to hexing him along with the rest of the Slytherins, and we would have done it if not for Harry. He held us back, saying it wasn't worth it. If he's a dark wizard, then I'm a broomstick." —This was Blaise Zabini, a Slytherin first-year and Harry Potter's roommate, speaking about him.
"—Harry Potter is a kind and polite boy who has always been very nice to me since we first met on the train. Since then, he's helped me with my studies and has been a good friend overall. As for his snake, it's a very kind and peaceful creature. I've petted it several times, and it has never behaved unfriendly toward me. I genuinely think it likes me and don't enjoy hearing Harry and his familiar being insulted, especially by someone like Ron Weasley. In our first Transfiguration lesson, he tried to use Harry's parents' names to make him feel guilty about the snake. Adding that to his comment after saving my friend, I can't help but wonder who the real dark wizard is." —This was written by a Slytherin first-year girl about the Boy-Who-Lived.
These are just a few of the letters I received. All the Slytherin first-years sent me messages that mostly said the same thing. I urge the wizarding world to truly think about how we treat Harry Potter. Despite all he has done, we judge him for things beyond his control and do nothing when people like Mr. Weasley behave disgracefully.
Sharon Maddison."
"Well… I like it," Harry commented after finishing the article. He turned to look at his friends, who stared at him with stunned expressions. "What?"
"—Your relatives abused you?" Tracy hissed angrily. "—How dare they?!" Judging by the looks on Daphne and Blaise's faces, they agreed with Tracy.
"That's what I'm saying!" Jet added his two knuts.
"—I don't like thinking about it," Harry sighed. "—And the reason I mentioned it in the article was simple: to kill two birds with one stone."
"—Huh?" Blaise blinked in confusion.
"—It's a Muggle saying. I mean I'm using the article not only to get back at Weasley but also to get away from those Muggles—or at least have them punished. If everything goes well, I might even find a new family." The boy explained. As soon as he finished speaking, Hedwig hopped onto his shoulder and gently rubbed her head against his cheek, while Jet slithered up his arm and did the same on the other side. "—Thanks, guys," Potter smiled at both of them.
"—The article is pretty good," Blaise agreed, trying to steer the conversation in a different direction.
"—Yeah, so were the letters. Thanks, guys, it's hard not to blush."
"—I didn't say anything special, just the truth," Daphne replied with a smile.
"—I know that reporter," Blaise smirked. "—Miss Maddison is acquainted with my mother. That might be why Angela managed to convince her to write the article."
"—Remind me to thank them both later," Harry requested, standing up. "—Alright, time for lessons. Hedwig, I'll see you later." The owl hooted in agreement before flying off his shoulder.
"—Finally, she's off my spot," Jet grumbled, resuming his usual position on Harry's shoulders.
As Harry and his friends left the hall, they couldn't help but notice the hateful glare coming from a certain red-faced Weasley at the Gryffindor table. What they didn't see was the look of horror on Dumbledore's face.
