Chapter 19 - Meeting Cynthia in the Pokémon World
Hong Meiling opened her eyes in shock.
She immediately looked around to survey the mansion’s conditions, but her heart sank when she realized that she was laying on some sort of mountain range and not on the charred and burnt garden of the Scarlet Devil Mansion.
She immediately guessed that Reimu Hakurei’s Fantasy Seal had knocked her out, and the system in her brain considered her to be sleeping, thus entering another world.
After all, I already got enough Dream Energy, but what world am I in now?
She was laying on an uneven mountain path; the land beside her was scattered with rocks and sparsely gathered trees on both sides.
Looking up, the mountain towered over her, and the peak was far out of reach. She guessed that she was halfway down the mountainside.
Faint volcanic ash spurt into the air from the peak from time-to-time, and she immediately realized that this was a volcano. The ambient temperature was hot and stuffy, and she could easily deduce that it was over thirty-five degrees Celcius.
As Meiling surveyed the environment around her, a strange being that looked like a round stone with a pair of eyes and arms passed by her, causing her to stumble backwards slightly.
That’s a Geodude!
Coming back to her senses, the tiny Geodude had disappeared.
However, that was all it took for Meiling to know that she was in the world of Pokémon.
Pokémons are the strange, living creatures of this world, and they are divided into many types, as well as possessing many different abilities. Some humans tame Pokémon to keep them as pets, or to let them participate in battles, or to let them compete in pageants, etc.
Meiling’s shock wore off, and she was delighted to find that she has stumbled into this world. She was also a Pokémon player in her previous life, and as an avid Pokémon fan, who hasn’t dreamt of raising a Pikachu, or an Eevee, or hell, any Pokémon by themselves?
Immediately, she gathered her thoughts: If I want to complete achievements and obtain rewards, the easiest way should be to participate in the Pokémon League and win a regional championship, right? But I can probably only stay here for about ten days at most – if I want to collect all eight Gym Badges, challenge the Elite Four, and then the Champion… that’s impossible to do in just ten days!
And… the competition might not be held within these ten days… what do I do? Do I go for Team Rocket instead?
She sighed and sat back down on the mountain path to reassess her choices – if she joins the Pokémon League, she has to catch Pokémon and fight using Pokémon, so everything is dependent on the Pokémon itself. She would, under no circumstances, be allowed to fight other Pokémon using physical combat. She will most definitely get banned and locked up somewhere.
However, there are no restrictions when it comes to defeating Team Rocket. Would there be a referee or security to stop her from beating them up using her raw fists on them?
With her strength, she would be unable to defeat strong Pokémon like Arceus, Eternatus, and Necrozma. However, she might have a chance at dealing with Pokémon weaker than them.
She got a little giddy thinking about the rewards if she complete the achievements as well.
If she obtains a Pokémon’s ability, abilities that originate from the most powerful of Pokémon like Origin Wave, Spatial Rend, and Shadow Force are all excellent choices. However, if she obtains abilities shared with other Pokémon, then that would be unlucky. Abilities that debuff her enemies, like Shout, would be useful, but abilities like Tackle are useless to her.
However, it was too early to start dreaming – she could only stay here for about ten days, but ten days is a generous amount of time. Now, she had to figure out where she was in the Pokémon world, and prepare from there onwards.
However, as soon as she got up, a wild Pokémon appeared in front of her.
It’s normal for wild Pokémon to attack humans, so she guessed that this must be some kind of area that houses wild Pokémons.
It was an Onix – a large, snake-like rock Pokémon, slithering down the mountain path. It was almost nine meters long, and its attacks were extremely powerful.
But to Meiling, the Onix posed no threat to her.
It slithered down the mountain path, and raised its head to swipe at Meiling.
However, she jumped up and avoided its snake edge, causing the Onix to slam straight into a large rock nearby.
The Onix saw stars as it backed away from the rock, and Meiling immediately took advantage of its downtime.
The Onix felt this strange human standing on its head, and it immediately shook its head and entire body in an attempt to throw this human off.
But little did it know that it was facing an expert in martial arts – she kept steady despite the Onix’s thrashing, as if her feet were rooted on its head. The more the Onix shook, the dizzier it became.
Its thrashing slowed, and Meiling raised her fist and punched the Onix on the head, causing it to fall straight down to the ground.
Meiling leapt off of its head before the impact, and landed steadily on both of her feet.
Fear seemed to flood the Onix’s eyes. Although the Onix is made of stone, Meiling’s fist was able to cause a huge dent on top of its head.
Meiling used her fist as a way to threaten the Onix. If she used any of her other abilities on it, it won’t just feel a little dizzy.
The Onix understood that it couldn’t cross this strange human’s path, and crawled back up the mountain path in a hurry.
Watching it slither away, she sighed in disappointment. If only I had a Poké Ball with me…
Since she was in the Pokémon world, she needed some Pokémon no matter what.
Of course, the Onix is not a particularly rare Pokémon. Besides, she had something else to deal with, or rather, somebody else.
She immediately turned around to greet the stranger, who appeared during her tiny battle with the Onix.
Standing before her was a girl in a black dress, with gorgeous blonde hair with a face to match. She also looked very young, though her eyes were staring at Meiling in disbelief as her hand holding a pokéball trembled.
Meiling guessed that this girl wanted to save her by summoning her own Pokémon, but never would she expect that this peculiar girl-in-green to simply beat the Onix up.
And… why does she look so familiar, Meiling wondered.
“H-how did you do it?” the girl asked, ecstatic. “You scared that Onix away with a single punch!”
“Ah, like this, I guess…” Meiling shyly answered as she lightly punched the air in front of her.
The girl tilted her head in disbelief once again. She recalled seeing Trainers fighting with their fighting-type Pokémon to train them, and like Meiling, they could suppress them with a single punch. However, she never saw an Onix getting punched before.
The girl soon realized she was staring at Meiling, and thought that it was impolite. Hence, she smiled sheepishly and introduced herself, “My name is Cynthia, and I want to become the next Champion of the Sinnoh region.”
C-Cynthia? No way… no wonder she looked a little familiar.
In the Pokémon games, Cynthia is the Champion of Sinnoh, and one of the strongest Trainers in Pokémon.
Her age is listed as ‘Unknown,’ but she looked like she was in her twenties in the Pokémon games. However, the Cynthia before her looked considerably younger, and according to her, she had not become the Champion of Sinnoh yet. It seems that Meiling was transported to an early timeline.
“And this is my Gabite,” Cynthia continued.
She released her Gabite from the Poké Ball, and a strange creature that looked like a shark standing on two legs stood next to its master. It was about 1.4 meters tall, and its fins acted like forearms, and the ends of its forearms had appendages that looked like hooked claws.
The Gabite gave a polite roar to Meiling.
In the Pokémon games, the Gabite evolves into the Garchomp, which is Cynthia’s best Pokémon. It seems that it has yet to complete its final evolution.
“May I ask for your name?” Cynthia asked. “Are you also a Pokémon Trainer?”
“My name is Hong Meiling,” Meiling greeted with a smile. “I plan on becoming a Pokémon Trainer myself, but I have neither Poké Ball nor Pokémon for now…”
Cynthia was a little puzzled – if she wanted to become a trainer, she needed neither of those things. In fact, there are many Pokémon centers or research institutes that provide a potential Trainer with a trained, starting Pokémons that are friendly to humans. Of course, this costs a considerable amount of money.
That is the first step of becoming a Pokémon Trainer. If you want to simply raise it as a pet, you can stop there, but if you want to fight in battles and participate in championships, you need to register at the Pokémon League.
“Well, Miss Meiling, what are you doing all the way up in Stark Mountain?”
Oh. I’m in Stark Mountain, Meiling realized, and wondered why she didn’t guess earlier. She met Cynthia, which means she was most likely in the Sinnoh region, and the only volcano in Sinnoh is Stark Mountain.
