Chapter 21 - Heatran (2)
Magma Storm deals heavy damage and binds a target – this is one of Heatran’s best move.
An overbearing whirlwind of fire enveloped Cynthia’s Gabite and Gastrodon, microwaving the two Pokémon together. The two Pokémon still held on strong despite the intense heat, but if this goes on, they will succumb to the fire sooner or later.
Although Fire-type attacks deals half damage to Gabite and Gastrodon, Magma Storm’s power is unfathomably high, and even if the damage is cut by half, it is still able to continuously scorch the two Pokémon alive given enough time.
“G-Gastrodon, use Whirlpool to extinguish the tornado!” Cynthia yelled amidst the heat.
Gastrodon, hearing this, immediately opened its mouth and sprayed out a huge geyser of water out of its mouth.
The vortex of water slammed against the swirling wall of fire enveloping the two, causing deep waves of steam to generate. Part of the flames were extinguished, creating a gap within the fiery constraints of the tornado.
Cynthia immediately directed her Pokémon to escape via the gap – her Gabite scooped Gastrodon up on its shoulders and skittered out through the gap.
However, just as Gabite landed on the floor, a sharp, spike-like stone erupted from the ground as it performed an uppercut on Gabite’s belly, causing Gabite and Gastrodon to flop on the floor.
That’s Heatran’s Stone Edge!
Hong Meiling was slightly speechless when she saw this – this far exceeds the limit of attacks used by a Pokémon!
In the Pokémon games, each Pokémon can only be equipped with a maximum of four skills. If a Trainer wants their Pokémon to learn a new skill despite reaching the maximum, they must order the Pokémon to forget one of its skill to make space for the new one.
In the animation, this wasn’t strictly followed, but as the plot progressed, this ‘rule’ was gradually implemented and improved upon.
However, since the beginning of this fight, Heatran has used Lava Plume, Flamethrower, Heat Wave, Magma Storm, and Stone Edge. That’s five attacks! Meiling thought to herself.
Seems that in the ‘real’ world, there are no limits to how many skills a Pokémon can learn!
Lore-wise, the explanation given in-game is that Pokémons have poor memory, so if they want to learn a new skill, they must forget an old one.
That would make sense with a Pokémon like Magikarp – hell, it even looks as if it has low IQ. However, for Pokémon like Oranguru and Alakazam, who are known to be extremely intelligent Pokémon, it is unreasonable for them to possess ‘poor memory.’ To be exact, Alakazam’s highest recorded IQ is 5,000 – if it couldn’t memorize more than four skills, then is IQ even real?
And what about Mythical Pokémon like Arceus? Does it truly make sense that The Original One, the Creator, the First, is unable to remember more than four skills in its everlasting life? How stupid!
Therefore, Meiling could only accept that this will be an uphill battle moving forward.
Taking advantage of Gabite being down, Heatran immediately spat out jets of flames out from its mouth.
Strangely enough, the spray of fire seem to snake past Gabite and Gastrodon, creeping and slithering towards Cynthia – closer, and closer, and closer-
“Gastrodon! Another Whirlpool!” Cynthia yelled out in a panic as her eyes widened at the realization. Heatran is no longer trying to subdue the two Pokémon before it, but the Trainer herself.
Gastrodon immediately leapt up from the ground and unleashed a violent jet of water from its mouth, colliding with the curtain of flames.
However, Heatran’s fire far exceeded Gastrodon’s pitiful jet of water in terms of power, and even if Water-type attacks are meant to suppress Fire-type attacks, the curtain of fire stood resilient, pushing back Gastrodon’s Whirlpool.
Cynthia was immediately prepared herself to run to the side to dodge the violent fire that crept towards her as she gripped on her third Poké Ball, intending to send out her third Pokémon to fight against Heatran.
However, instead of a Pokémon being sent out, the figure of Meiling zipped right in front of her, using her body as a meat shield to defend Cynthia.
“W-what are you doing?” Cynthia’s face paled. “What are you doing?!”
Even if Meiling was strong enough to fight against an Onix, it would be impossible for her to withstand a Legendary Pokémon’s flames with her body!
Hell, even the fire projected by an ordinary Pokémon is enough to cause third-degree burns in a human!
In the next moment, Heatran’s flames dispelled Gastrodon’s water jet in a pitiful screech of steam, and the flames loomed over them as it licked closer and closer towards Meiling.
Cynthia’s face turned ashen – with Meiling in front of her, she couldn’t throw the Poké Ball at the correct trajectory, and she could only watch as this strange girl-in-green was about to get turned into a roasted girl-in-green.
She’s going to die! She’s going to… die?
However, what Cynthia saw next caused her eyes to widen even more.
Meiling spun rapidly on the spot as the flames touched her, causing countless, colorful streams of light to orbit around her body.
This move of hers is called Colorful Rainbow Wind Chime, combining offense and defense into a single move.
This allows Meiling to rotate rapidly, causing her to become a living, iridescent tornado that deflects an enemy’s attack, and causes a colorful whirlwind strong enough to slice through close-by enemies.
This is similar to Kaiten from Naruto – a taijutsu that channel’s ones chakra to cause them to spin rapidly and form a shield so long as they continue to spin. However, Kaiten can only be used in place, while Meiling is able to move freely during Colorful Rainbow Wind Chime.
The flames were immediately consumed by Meiling’s own iridescent tornado, causing the flames to be launched as fireballs away from the cave as they blast the rocky walls of the cavern.
Cynthia was speechless.
Meiling was still human in her eyes when she punched the Onix earlier today. Now, she no longer thinks that Meiling is human.
…could she be a hybrid between a human and a Pokémon?
Cynthia studies all kinds of Pokémon-related knowledge, which includes history. In some old and tattered documents, it was said that humans and Pokémons have copulated. Later, their children would possess strange abilities too.
Cynthia, red-faced, brushed the documents off as fiction. Plus, although she liked Pokémon a lot, she couldn’t imagine how a human and a Pokémon would ever copulate with one another, or even raise a child together.
However, the scene before her subverted her expectations. Perhaps Meiling is one of these legendary children – otherwise, it would be impossible to explain why she could do what she just did.
Meiling stopped spinning after Heatran stopped spitting its torrent of flames. She then immediately blinked forward, crossing a distance of over ten meters and seemingly teleported in front of Heatran, and delivered a sturdy punch to its rocky forehead.
Heatran, although shocked, immediately reacted and responded by thickening her head with a thick layer of metal – Iron Head!
Meiling’s fist collided with Heatran’s Iron Head, and both sides were pushed back by the sheer force generated by them meeting. Meiling gracefully leapt onto the ground, while Heatran had to plant its feet on the ground to avoid toppling over.
Ack… my fingers… Meiling flinched as she brought her hand up to her eyes. Heatran’s body temperature is unfathomably hot, and Meiling punched so hard that her fingers were both injured and burnt.
Meiling remembered that Heatran’s body passively generates intense waves of heat, and she would be burnt to a crisp if she fought with him in close combat.
Heatran’s blood is like lava. Its body is made of steel, and it melts little by little due to the temperatures passively generated by its body.
Feels exaggerated, Meiling thought to herself as she massaged her hand. It’s hot, but not that hot.
Of course, she cannot fully ignore this property. With enough punches, her entire fist might just melt off.
Would be nice if I remembered it earlier!
She stood tall as she stared into Heatran’s eyes, No need to hold back anymore. I need to win this!
“True Intense Rainbow Fist!”
Rainbow-like energy wrapped around her fists as qi coursed through her blood wildly – she took a step forward, and began punching Heatran at a blinding speed.
Heatran’s body may be as hard as steel, but Meiling’s punches were painful enough to cause visibly injury to Heatran.
Sharp, searing pain radiated throughout Heatran’s body, causing it to wince in pain. With Meiling’s fists wrapped in qi, it minimizes the damage caused to her fists.
Meiling continued her endless, colorful onslaught of punches when Heatran opened its mouth, echoing the sounds of screeching metal across the entire cave.
D-damn it, it’s its Metal Sound!
Metal Sound is a move that reduces an opponent’s special defense, but in the living, breathing Pokémon world, Meiling immediately felt violent, stinging ringing in her ears. She immediately stopped her onslaught and took a few steps back.
She took the time to look at her fists despite the stinging pain in her ears, and concluded that they were only slightly injured and charred.
Heatran no longer wanted to fight Meiling. It could deduce that it was no match for the ‘human’ in front of it.
It felt incredibly depressed – it was minding its own business in its cave, until a few people decided to rouse it from its sleep. It was then forced to battle several Pokémon, and now, it was beaten up by a human!
Raising its legs, Heatran was ready to escape.
