Chapter 148: What is a Hero?
Among the seated crowd, two standing figures were particularly conspicuous.
This middle-aged couple wasn't tall, but at this moment, everyone looked up at them, their figures seemingly towering.
"Let me be the first!" Another figure sprang up from the crowd, a small woman in what looked like a uniform white shirt, so slight she seemed like a gust of wind could blow her away.
Yun Feng, finally tearing his gaze from the couple, looked at the woman, surprise flickering across his face.
"You're… Xiao Chen?" Yun Feng recognized her; she was the receptionist at his company.
Xiao Chen forced a brave smile at Yun Feng, then turned and waved to the crowd. "Sorry, everyone, but I've been with the boss for so long, this privilege is mine. No objections, right?"
Privilege? Was it really a privilege?
The first person to leave wasn't just shouldering the burden of testing how many people the Honkai Beast would tolerate; they were also facing the threat of the battlefield itself!
In terms of danger, the first spot was no less risky than the ones that followed!
Every person who volunteered now was essentially… gambling with their life!
Yet, Xiao Chen and the middle-aged couple acted like they'd struck gold. Even though everyone knew the truth, these few still tried to alleviate the guilt of those who didn't stand up…
Who would be next? Which three people?
Three was the ideal number Kiana had suggested.
Kiana had simply thought of the number "3," but Bronya's support for the plan stemmed from another possibility: that Shu had successfully found Otto and the others, and now Shu, along with three others, a total of four units, were holding off the Honkai Beast.
So, "3" was their limit.
Kiana's actually quite smart… Bronya glanced at Kiana, who seemed to have spaced out for some reason, then looked at Mei.
Mei nodded, understanding Bronya's intent.
Three people… could there be anyone more suitable for this final test than the three of them?
If they succeeded, they could also clear the way of any zombies or Deadmen, preparing for the others to follow.
But just as Mei was about to volunteer, three more figures abruptly stood up from the crowd.
This time, they were young faces, still carrying a hint of youthful innocence, yet with a touch of newfound adult composure.
Three college students, one of whom was the student who had asked the question earlier.
"We're athletes! We can run fast!" The student who had asked the question yelled, his voice full of energy, flexing his arm to show off his muscles.
"Even if something happens to us, it's fine! We'll just respawn!" Another student grinned, giving a slightly shaky thumbs-up.
"And we've got loud voices, we'll definitely yell loud enough for you to hear!" The last student flipped his hair and lightly kicked the other two.
The two kicks seemed to steady their trembling legs.
"What nonsense…" The middle-aged couple looked heartbroken. "You kids, why are you joining in on this?"
"Quick, sit back down!"
"Hey! That's not right!" The three students immediately became anxious. "We're getting rusty sitting around! We'll have to run sooner or later, might as well do it now!"
"Oh dear…" The couple could only sigh and shake their heads.
"Youth is truly wonderful… wait, I'm only in my twenties too!" Xiao Chen, watching the anxious students, sighed, then suddenly realized she wasn't old either.
"Let us go…" Mei, watching the argument, couldn't help but speak up.
"No!" This time, a chorus of voices from all sides shut her down.
Mei looked in surprise at Yun Feng and Chen Shicheng, who had joined the chorus. "But…"
"If…" Yun Feng, looking at the six volunteers, took a deep breath, his voice slightly hoarse. "If they all succeed, then you can leave…"
Wouldn't they be the first beneficiaries of these six people's gamble with their lives?!
"You three are the ones who need to protect yourselves the most here." Yun Feng turned sharply, looking at Mei. "You still have to lead them out of here, don't forget."
Mei, speechless, could only fall silent.
Then, four more people stood up from the crowd.
"We'll go…" This group consisted of an elderly person, a student, and a couple. They exchanged glances, surprise evident in their eyes.
"Enough." Yun Feng cut off their instinctive chorus, sighing deeply. "We… can only test up to three people…"
"What?!" The four who had just stood up stared wide-eyed, and a group of five also rose from the crowd. "Why?!"
"Three is enough." Yun Feng's voice suddenly turned stern, returning to his authoritative demeanor.
"You, sit down. And Xiao Chen, Uncle Liu, Auntie Fen, and… you three friends, are you absolutely sure about this?"
Yun Feng looked at them, and the others who had stood up looked at them, as did those who remained seated.
Everyone's gaze was fixed on these three generations, standing tall and resolute.
"Boss, I finally worked up the courage…" Xiao Chen mumbled, shrinking back slightly.
"We have no objections." The middle-aged couple nodded.
"Same here!" The three college students exchanged glances, clasped their hands in unison, and declared with exaggerated solemnity.
"…Alright." Yun Feng's lips moved, then he turned and walked towards the main entrance.
The moment he turned, his back slumped.
The volunteers were about to follow when Yun Feng spoke, his voice carrying the gravity of an oath.
"I will be the last one to leave, watching every single one of you escape this place." He paused, not turning back, but straightening his spine.
Behind him, the six exchanged glances, nodding silently, then stepped out of the crowd, following Yun Feng towards the entrance.
"Mei… they…" Watching them leave, Kiana, who had been frozen since her suggestion, finally spoke softly.
Mei turned back to look at Kiana's bewildered face. She had expected Kiana to fight for a spot among the volunteers.
"Wouldn't it have been better if we had done it?" Kiana, as Mei had predicted, finally voiced this question.
Mei sighed, unsure what to say.
But Kiana didn't dwell on this question, immediately following up with her real doubt.
"They… are they heroes?"
"Yes," Mei and Bronya answered in unison.
Kiana's eyes gradually lit up.
She finally understood… what a hero truly was.
