Horrific Shorts: Zombie Edition

Chapter 553: Story 553: Shadows of the Barn

The setting sun cast long shadows over the abandoned farmland. A dilapidated barn stood at its center, surrounded by a sprawling field of withered crops and scattered zombie figures. The air was heavy with the stench of decay, and the moans of the undead echoed across the barren landscape.

Captain Marcus Kane tightened his grip on his shotgun as the ZETU convoy came to a halt. "This is the source of the latest outbreak report," he said, his eyes fixed on the barn. "Satellite scans detected large movements inside. Stay sharp."

"Lovely," Jenna 'Blaze' Hart muttered, strapping a fresh fuel tank to her flamethrower. "Nothing like a sunset stroll with the undead."

Ethan 'Brain' O'Connor's drone hovered above the scene, sending a live feed to his tablet. "Multiple heat signatures inside the barn, but they're… clustered. Something's keeping them grouped together."

Detective Lila 'Huntress' Navarro squinted toward the barn. "It's too quiet. They're not wandering like usual. This feels… wrong."

Marcus nodded. "Riley, get up high and cover us. Blaze, Shield, you're on defense. Huntress and I will clear the barn."

Riley 'Quick Shot' Bennett climbed to the roof of an old grain silo, setting up her sniper position. Through her scope, she surveyed the horde. "Captain, they're not moving like normal zombies. They're… waiting."

Marcus frowned. "Waiting for what?"

As if in response, the barn doors creaked open, revealing a massive figure shrouded in shadows. Its decayed body towered over the other zombies, its elongated arms ending in jagged claws. It let out a deafening roar, and the horde surged forward as one.

"Ambush!" Marcus shouted.

The team sprang into action. Derek 'Shield' Coleman raised his riot shield, holding the line as Blaze unleashed a wall of fire to slow the advancing horde. The zombies, however, were faster and more aggressive than usual, charging through the flames with a determination ZETU hadn't seen before.

Inside the barn, Marcus and Lila moved quickly, weaving between hay bales and broken equipment. The stench was overwhelming, and the floor was slick with rotting fluids. In the center of the barn, they found the source of the anomaly—a grotesque nest of corpses, pulsating with green energy.

"What is this thing?" Lila asked, her pistols trained on the mass.

Marcus grimaced. "It's a hive. The big one outside is controlling the others. Take this out, and we cut off its power."

Lila nodded, firing into the nest. The mass writhed and screeched, sending shockwaves through the barn. Outside, the horde faltered, their movements becoming erratic.

"Keep firing!" Marcus ordered as he lobbed a grenade into the center of the nest. The explosion sent a wave of putrid liquid splattering across the barn, and the hive fell silent.

Outside, the giant zombie let out a final roar before collapsing, its horde dropping lifelessly around it.

"Target neutralized," Ethan confirmed over comms.

Marcus stepped out of the barn, covered in grime. "Good work, team. Let's burn this place down and move out. We've got more to clean up."
