Chapter 104: Venture Investment
Hiding in a nature reserve and using park rangers as informants within the area—
It seemed that the closer they got to the target, the tighter the security became.
Trying to sneak in undetected was already unrealistic.
As the saying goes, a cunning rabbit has three burrows.
If Nolan frequently relocated his hideout, and each location was as well-guarded as this one, then tracking him down would be exceedingly difficult.
With a son like that, it was no surprise that the Ten Elders, standing at the pinnacle of the underworld, were even harder to locate.
No wonder Illumi needed Kurt's ability to assist in assassinating the Ten Elders.
Witnessing firsthand the concealment tactics of the underworld's top figures, Moro couldn't help but sigh. Some people in this world were incredibly difficult to deal with, even if one ignored their sheer strength.
Because of the unexpected complication with the park rangers, Moro and Kurt decided to pick up the pace, moving swiftly through the dense forested mountains.
—Meanwhile—
A luxurious mansion, surrounded by thick forest in the mountains.
The death of the park rangers and the last sounds captured by the surveillance devices were all received by the mansion's security control room.
"We have intruders."
The head of security immediately relayed this information to Nolan inside the mansion.
As the message was passed through the chain of command, several security teams stationed in the courtyard went into high alert.
Beyond the park rangers patrolling the protected reserve, heavily armed security teams formed additional layers of defense, radiating outward from the mansion.
Before long, those waiting in the main hall of the mansion also received the alert about the intruders.
"For someone to make it this far, they must have some skill. Definitely not just some random nobodies."
Upon hearing the news, Luke put down his magazine, tilting his head slightly toward the tightly shut doors. It was almost as if he could sense the tense atmosphere emanating from the security personnel outside.
This was one of the most heavily protected locations.
At times, even the Ten Elders would choose this place for their secret meetings.
The intelligence defense team monitored this location 24/7, immediately triggering emergency protocols at the slightest mention of it across any intelligence channels. Depending on the situation, the residents would either fortify their defenses or relocate immediately.
Yet now, intruders had appeared out of nowhere—without the intelligence defense team detecting any prior warning signs.
This meant one of two possibilities:
The intruders had an exceptional intelligence network, capable of bypassing constant surveillance and directly pinpointing the location.
The intruders possessed Nen abilities related to tracking people or objects.
Either way, it was clear that these intruders were no ordinary threats.
Luke placed a hand under his chin, glancing sideways at the operative who had just reported the situation.
"Where are they now?" he asked.
"Five minutes ago, the vital signs of Park Rangers No. 24 and No. 26 in the secondary perimeter disappeared. One minute ago, Rangers No. 14 and No. 15 also lost their signals."**
The operative, pressing a finger against his earpiece, continued in a precise tone, "Based on this pattern, we can infer that the intruders are already approaching the primary perimeter—and they are moving fast."
"Quite the aggressive approach."
Adams, the Ring Finger, slowly removed his black-rimmed glasses and began gently wiping the lenses.
Caleb, the Middle Finger, merely yawned lazily, showing little concern for the supposed "intruders."
Luke stood up, hands in his pockets, and glanced at Adams, who was still cleaning his glasses.
"Ring Finger, inform Index Finger of the situation. Tell her to get here as soon as possible."
"No problem." Adams replied with a warm smile.
Caleb, still sprawled on the couch, clicked his tongue in mild annoyance.
They all knew that whenever Luke called them by their codename "Finger" titles, it meant he was treating the matter with strict formality.
Adams slid his glasses back on, took out his phone, but did not make a direct call.
He knew that Amanda, the Index Finger, would never answer.
Instead, he typed up a concise text message, summarizing the intruder situation and Luke's directive to arrive ASAP, then hit send.
Afterward, Adams stood up from the couch and asked in his usual soft-spoken voice:
"Considering that the intruder is likely an expert, would any of you like to sign a venture investment contract with me first?"
"I don't need it."
Luke shook his head, his voice calm. "You know our abilities aren't compatible. If it were a minor fight, signing an investment contract beforehand wouldn't be a big deal. But right now, we don't know the enemy's strength—there's no need to take unnecessary risks."
"Understood."
Adams chuckled and turned his gaze to Caleb, who was still lazily scratching his head.
"Out of all of us, Retona and Amanda are the best suited to partner with you. But Retona is dead, and Amanda isn't here yet. Guess that leaves me." Caleb said, stretching his arms with an uninterested tone.
"In reality, there's no such thing as a 'best fit.' Anyone willing to embrace risk qualifies."
Adams' voice was gentle yet persuasive, carrying an undeniable sense of conviction.
Raising his hand, his Nen aura swirled like mist, condensing into a semi-transparent contract floating in the air—
"Venture Investment"
A hybrid ability combining Emission and Contractual Manipulation.
When the ability user secures an investor's consent, they sign a risk contract that lasts three days.
Once activated, the user can extract 30% of the investor's aura reserve. In return, both parties share the same risks.
If the ability user is attacked, 50% of the damage they suffer is transferred to the investor.
If the accumulated damage exceeds the available aura reserves, the investment fails.
The ability user is then unable to initiate another investment for 30 days, while the investor loses access to their invested 30% aura for three days.
Conversely, if the ability user successfully defeats an opponent, they can extract a portion of the enemy's aura.
For example: If they steal 10% of an opponent's aura, both the user and investor gain 5% each.
Once the return rate doubles (60%), the investment succeeds.
The opponent "goes bankrupt", forcibly entering Zetsu (a complete aura shutdown) for three days.
During this period, the user and investor split 100% of the opponent's aura.
Adams adjusted his glasses and handed the contract to Caleb.
Caleb took the contract and pressed his thumbprint onto it.
The contract immediately vanished, and a flow of aura surged from Caleb to Adams.
At that moment—
A fierce burst of gunfire erupted outside in the courtyard.
Everyone instinctively turned toward the locked doors.
"They got here fast..."
