Chapter 229: **Chapter 226: A Secret Belonging Solely to Ai Haibara**

Ai Haibara, dressed in her pajamas, pushed the door open.

Her movements were slow and cautious, careful not to make a sound that might wake the peacefully sleeping Akemi Miyano.

After stepping out of the room, she walked quietly up the stairs to the fourth floor, stopping in front of Fujino's bedroom door.

Ai Haibara's eyes fixed on the door in front of her as countless thoughts raced through her mind.

In this world, there weren't many people willing to save her.

In fact, the number of such people could be counted on the fingers of one hand.

She had a faint suspicion that the person who had just saved her was Fujino.

No, it was more than a suspicion—she knew deep down that it could only be Fujino who had saved her and brought her home.

She found herself hoping that the figure in the white robe was Fujino.

And yet, at the same time, she didn't want that person to be Fujino.

Perhaps it was fear.

After all, ever since that rainy night, she had already owed Fujino far too much.

If Fujino truly was the one in the white robe, then what she owed him would be something she could never repay.

...

Pulling herself back from her thoughts, Ai Haibara regarded the door before her. To her, it had become like Pandora's magical door, leading to the unknown.

"Even if I'm just fooling myself…"

Taking a deep breath, she made her decision. She raised her small hand and gently pushed the door open with her petite frame.

What greeted her was an empty bedroom.

Ai Haibara froze in place, staring in disbelief.

"If Fujino were in this room, then he definitely wouldn't be the one in the white robe."

She had repeated this thought to herself more than once, reassuring herself.

But as the door to the unknown opened, the last glimmer of hope in her heart completely disintegrated.

"What am I even doubting…"

Ai Haibara snapped out of her daze, a soft expression gradually appearing on her face.

She walked slowly to the window, lowering her head and gaze. Letting out a soft sigh, her emotions were a tangled mess.

"Beep, beep, beep!"

Just as she was lost in thought, the sudden ringing of a phone broke through her reverie.

Startled, she froze, much like a guilty kitten caught doing something wrong. Her wary eyes darted around the room.

She quickly pinpointed the source of the sound.

It was in her pocket.

Ai Haibara let out a small sigh of relief.

She didn't know how she should face the situation now that the delicate balance of secrecy had been broken.

Redirecting her attention, she reached into her pocket and pulled out her phone.

On the screen, the name **[Edogawa Conan]** was displayed.

The warmth in Ai Haibara's expression faded, replaced by her usual calm demeanor. She answered the call.

"Hello."

"Haibara?!"

Conan's urgent voice came through the line the moment he heard her speak. "Where are you right now? I've been searching for you all over the hotel, but I couldn't find you…"

"I'm at Fujino's house."

Ai Haibara glanced at the Mouri Detective Agency across the street. "Right across from the detective agency where you usually stay."

Conan sounded puzzled. "How did you even escape?"

"I don't remember."

Ai Haibara paused, organizing her thoughts before explaining, "I remember being captured by Pisco and locked in a storage room. After that, I cut off communication with you. Then, the door was kicked open, and someone in a white robe came in. They used some strange object to make a cut on my hand. After that, I passed out. When I woke up, I was lying by the roadside, so I came home."

---

"If that's the case, then your identity probably hasn't been discovered by the organization yet."

Conan rubbed his chin and said, "Just a moment ago, I secretly followed Gin and Vodka into the hotel. But by the time I got there, they had already been gravely injured in an explosion."

He paused before continuing, "After that, the police discovered Pisco's corpse in one of the hotel rooms at the Beika Hotel."

Ai Haibara exclaimed in surprise, "Pisco is dead?"

"That's right."

On the other end of the call, Conan nodded. "He was stabbed in the chest with a sharp weapon and died on the spot. Judging from the time of death, it seems to have happened right after the police interrogation. If that's the case, then he probably didn't get the chance to tell Gin that you've been shrunk."

Hearing this, Ai Haibara froze, her eyes flickering with emotion.

She had heard that Fujino's alternate identity was known for never killing.

But today…

Could it have been for her?

As this thought crossed her mind, a wave of guilt surged within her.

The debt she owed seemed to grow heavier...

"You mentioned someone in a white cloak. That must be the Beika Batman."

At that moment, Conan's voice came through the phone again. "But why would he save you?"

Ai Haibara paused for a moment before responding, "Maybe he just happened to be passing by."

"Just passing by?"

Conan sounded even more puzzled. "Even if it were a coincidence, it's highly unlikely that he would just happen to pass by the Beika Hotel, save you, and kill Pisco…"

"Maybe he has a grudge against the organization."

Ai Haibara interrupted Conan, pretending to think. "He probably saved me by chance. After all, he also intervened when Ayumi was kidnapped before. I think his true purpose is to take revenge on the organization."

"I see…"

Hearing this, Conan nodded on the other end of the line, finding Ai Haibara's explanation reasonable. He immediately began speculating: "So he used bombs to seriously injure Gin and Vodka and then killed Pisco. It seems his real goal is to oppose the organization… I never expected that guy to hold a grudge against them too."

On the other end of the call, Ai Haibara nodded in satisfaction, affirming Conan's deduction.

Without saying much else, she quickly hung up the call.

Her pale, delicate hand gripped the crimson phone tightly as she gazed out at the falling snow. A faint smile tugged at the corners of her lips.

She had no intention of telling Conan about this.

Nor did she plan to tell anyone else.

She would keep this matter buried in her heart.

Let this secret belong solely to her.

---

Elsewhere, in a dimly lit alley.

Fujino, clad in an assassin's robe, grabbed a gaunt man by the collar of his trench coat and slammed him hard against the alley wall. His voice was cold and sharp: "Tell me—what is 'Butterfly'?"

"'Butterfly'?!"

The gaunt man froze, clearly taken aback.

"I've already done my research."

Using a voice modulator to make his voice eerily deep, Fujino continued, "You're the only drug dealer in this area selling something called 'Butterfly.'"

As he spoke, he raised his right hand. A silver blade slid out from his sleeve, its tip hovering dangerously close to the man's neck.

"You have two choices: tell me what 'Butterfly' is—or die."

"I'll talk! I'll talk!"

The gaunt man swallowed nervously. "The 'Butterfly' you're talking about—I just brought some new stock from my supplier. It's in my pocket."

Fujino released his grip, letting the man drop to the ground. With a flick of the blade, he gestured toward the man's pocket. "Take it out and show me."

"This is it."

The gaunt man fumbled hurriedly, pulling a small, red card from his pocket. "This is the 'Butterfly' you're asking about."
