Chapter 154: Chapter 154: Yondu Beats His Son
"The Power Stone is in my hands," Ronan declared smugly on the communication screen, where the looming purple figure of Thanos watched him. "According to our agreement, I'll give you the Stone if you help me destroy Xandar."
Thanos's expression remained unreadable as Ronan continued.
"But now that I know the Orb contains an Infinity Stone," Ronan added with a smirk, "why should I give it to you? With this, I can destroy Xandar myself!"
Ignoring his adjutant's alarmed look, Ronan dismantled the Cosmic Orb, revealing the glowing Power Stone within. "Master, you can't do this!" his adjutant protested. "Thanos is the most powerful force in the galaxy. He'll seek vengeance!"
"Soon he'll be irrelevant," Ronan sneered, grabbing the Power Stone. As its raw energy coursed through him, he let out a triumphant roar, the purple energy surging through his veins and nearly tearing his body apart. Steadying himself, he embedded the gem into his war hammer, feeling a newfound, intoxicating strength.
Facing Thanos's hologram, he shouted, "Watch as I annihilate Xandar! And then I'll come for you and make you pay for underestimating me!"
Thanos cut the transmission, dismissing the fool. Of all the people to empower, I get Ronan, he thought, exasperated. He couldn't help but compare his own situation to Thor's: while Thor had allies like Carol and Wanda, he was left with a reckless idiot. The Power Stone may be powerful, but only in capable hands… Ronan will be in for a rude awakening.
Meanwhile, on Yondu's spaceship, Star-Lord was not faring much better. Yondu was "disciplining" him with a familiar mix of yelling and rough treatment, practically treating him like a disobedient son.
"You dare betray me? When I took you in, you were just a scrawny kid!" Yondu bellowed, smacking him. "My crew wanted to eat you, and I saved you! And this is the thanks I get?"
Star-Lord groaned, exasperated. "Can you please stop bringing that up? It's been twenty years! You make it sound like not eating me was some huge favor. Who even thinks about eating people?!"
Yondu's irritation grew. All he wanted was for Quill to admit he was wrong, but the stubborn kid wouldn't give in. With his crew watching, Yondu knew he had to make an example of Quill. After all, he had a reputation to uphold.
With a sigh, Yondu said, "Don't blame me for what's about to happen. The crew needs to see what happens to traitors." With a whistle, he summoned his arrow, which hovered ominously near Quill's neck.
"If you kill me now," Quill stammered, desperate, "you'll miss out on the biggest score of your life!"
Yondu's eyebrow raised skeptically. "If you mean the Power Stone, forget it. No one's taking that from Ronan."
Quill flashed a grin. "Maybe not, but I have a plan. I know Ronan's weaknesses inside out."
Yondu's crew perked up at the mention of a plan. Yondu laughed, the tension easing. "Quill, you idiot, I was only joking! Let him go, boys. Let's hear what he has to say."
At that moment, a loud bang shook the ship. Rocket Raccoon was firing quantum energy blasts from his ship, demanding they release Quill.
Quill hurried to the window, shouting, "Rocket, stop! We're good here!"
As Rocket, Groot, and Drax entered to discuss their next steps with Yondu's crew, Yondu watched them warily. This is your chance, kid. Don't screw it up, he thought to himself, knowing Quill's plans had a history of being less than reliable.
Just then, one of Yondu's subordinates rushed over. "Boss, there's a ship approaching fast, and they want permission to board."
Yondu turned to the window and his jaw dropped. The approaching ship was heavily armed, boasting high-grade weapons that were worth more than his entire ship. And emblazoned on its side was the unmistakable emblem of Asgard.
"Give them permission to board," Yondu said, barely able to keep the awe from his voice.
The moment he finished speaking, Thor appeared before him, flanked by Nebula and Minerva.
Yondu tensed when he noticed Minerva. "A Kree?"
Minerva stepped back, sensing the tension, but Thor quickly clarified, "Relax, Yondu. Minerva is with Asgard now." He flashed a reassuring smile, which Minerva gratefully returned.
