Chapter 170: Chapter 170: Intruder, Kill!
One painful reality about Western countries is that people often live on credit, with little savings and poor financial resilience. This makes them especially vulnerable during crises—and quick to anger when things go wrong. They're easily incited, and it can be a chaotic scene when they protest, with little sign of the high education or refinement they claim to value.
Perhaps, in their view, the Avengers' role is to defend Earth. They expect the team to keep all threats away, and if any get through and cause harm, they consider it negligence. If the Avengers are going to fight aliens, why can't they do it in a way that protects people's property? And if someone's home or business is damaged, shouldn't the Avengers be responsible for covering the cost?
Tony and Thor bore the brunt of the public's anger. Tony, as the wealthiest Avenger, was an obvious target, and Thor, as the unofficial leader, was equally in the crosshairs. While Hulk was technically the most destructive, everyone knew he wasn't wealthy.
"No! Why is this happening?" Banner clutched his head in distress.
On the TV, news footage replayed the devastation in New York. Countless voices condemned the Avengers, and Hulk in particular.
"Wars come with casualties," Shuri said, trying to console him. "Why don't people see that? Without your hard work, they wouldn't even be alive to complain."
"If you ask me, some of these people aren't worth saving. Maybe they'd be better off as alien chow!" she added, her bluntness coming through.
"Ahem…" T'Challa, the Black Panther and heir to the throne, cleared his throat as he entered, interrupting Shuri's fiery remarks.
With a wry smile, he said, "We can't completely blame innocent people, Shuri. Losing one's life savings or falling deeply into debt is more than many can bear."
"But that doesn't mean they should target heroes!" Shuri argued. "If a patient dies, is it fair for their family to stab the doctor?"
Both T'Challa and Banner choked back a laugh at the vivid analogy.
T'Challa glanced at Banner. His sister was clearly infatuated, which worried him as her older brother. Over the years, they had been cautious about anyone getting close to her. But the investigation results on Banner were satisfactory. After all, his Hulk form was popular in Wakanda, and Banner himself was a good-hearted man.
T'Challa understood Shuri's frustration, though. As the future king, he had to think of broader implications.
Just then, Banner's phone rang—it was Thor.
"Have you seen the news?" Thor's voice was tense.
"What's your plan?" Banner asked.
"Plan? My plan is simple. Trudheim Manor is my private property. If anyone comes to cause trouble, I'll deal with them. Anyone who trespasses will be warned once, and if they don't leave, they'll be taken down. I'm not here to carry their responsibilities."
"Come on, man. Don't go overboard; you'll just make the Avengers look worse…"
"It's not my problem. If people let themselves be manipulated, they should consider the risk of provoking me," Thor said, and then hung up.
"Minerva," Thor called, "if anyone enters the manor without permission, warn them once. If they don't leave, eliminate them. I'll handle any issues."
"Understood, Your Highness!" Minerva replied.
Thor muttered, "Sometimes I feel like letting the aliens in and just letting them deal with these fools."
"Hahaha, exactly!" Loki's voice echoed through a video call. "Didn't I tell you, brother? Earthlings are ungrateful! Why bother protecting them when they're just a pack of ungrateful curs? How about I arrange another Chitauri invasion and let them all get wiped out?"
Thor smirked. "That's an idea. Why don't you contact Thanos and see if he'll lend you an army—or perhaps a certain Infinity Stone? Then again, knowing him, he might just kill you as a warm-up, considering how much he despises me."
Loki fell silent, not quite amused by the suggestion.
Nearby, Sif had been watching the conversation unfold, her face contorted with anger. "Why would they behave this way?" she asked, bewildered. "In Asgard, if we're attacked, our people mourn, and they rally to protect their loved ones and homes. They never turn against their own heroes! It's unthinkable to vent their anger on those who defend them. It's nothing short of betrayal."
Thor took her hand gently. "That's because we are a warrior people, Sif. In Asgard, we unite in the face of danger."
