I am Thor

Chapter 174: Chapter 174: Signs of a Split

"Well said!" Thor suddenly clapped his hands. "You've hit on a crucial point. These politicians never considered whether we'd agree to their terms. They don't see us as equals—they want to force us into submission."

"To them, we're the weaker side, expected to obey without the power to refuse. But the truth is, we're the ones qualified to make decisions," he added, his tone laced with intensity.

"Easy there…" Tony interrupted, trying to calm things down. He whispered, "Some of our actions have caused real damage, and we need this bill to regain public trust. Believe me, we're only making a small compromise to keep things flexible. If we completely oppose them, things could… get messy."

"Hold it, Tony," Thor said, shaking his head at what he saw as Tony's political naivety. "First off, public trust isn't nearly as important to me as dancing with Natasha. It's not me who needs their trust; they need my protection."

"Second, I couldn't care less about splitting with the Council. In any dispute, one side has to compromise, but that won't be me. Thanos, the Butcher of the Universe, couldn't make me compromise—what makes these politicians think they can? If it weren't for the Ancient One, Earth would still be under Asgard's rule. And now they think they can turn themselves into masters and enslave me, the future King of Asgard?"

Tony was silent, realizing Thor's words were valid. How could an alien prince ever accept becoming someone else's pawn?

"Lastly," Thor continued, "you're suggesting we compromise and sign, and then fight for more rights. Am I right?"

Tony nodded, agreeing with the idea.

"But in reality, they'll just keep pushing, unwilling to give up any power they've gained. In other words, the very thing we resist is what they desire most."

Thor's voice grew cold. "What happens then? Either you compromise completely or break the agreement and face their legal wrath, however unfair."

He continued, "Thank goodness we didn't have this bill four years ago, or they'd have nuked New York. Tony, what would you have done if they ordered you to drop a nuke in New York? They could put a gun to Pepper's head and force your hand. That's what this bill could enable."

Tony found himself at a loss for words.

The situation was clear. Only Tony, Rhodey, and Vision were in favor of signing the agreement. Natasha, while usually neutral, stood firmly with Thor this time, and even non-Avengers like Skye and Sharon had taken his side.

Tony's face darkened.

"Let's not blow this out of proportion," Steve said, trying to find middle ground. "Tony and I will go to Vienna for the signing and try to negotiate with the delegates to amend the agreement and give us proper respect. Thor, will you come?"

Tony nodded, recognizing this as a practical compromise. But he could feel the Avengers' unity slipping.

Thor shook his head, unconvinced. He had no interest in meeting with politicians who treated him as a pawn. Besides, in his view, it wasn't his place to go to them—they should be coming to him.

As a member of the Asgardian royal family, Thor had been raised with pride tempered by respect for all races. But if others tried to lord over him, he wouldn't hesitate to assert his authority. I am a god, he thought, and I won't be lectured by mortals who see me as a tool.

Meanwhile, Betty Ross had just ended a tense phone call with her father, General Ross, who had asked her to persuade Thor to sign the bill.

"No, Dad. Whatever he chooses, it's his own decision. I won't try to change his mind. Don't put me in this position," she had said firmly.

General Ross had made it clear: Thor was the greatest threat to their plan. If they could convince him to agree, the rest would fall in line.

But Betty refused to manipulate Thor. She knew his resolve—he would never compromise his principles, and certainly not for her sake. As she sat on the couch, wiping her eyes, she felt conflicted.

"What's wrong?" Thor's gentle voice asked, breaking the silence.

Betty stayed quiet, not wanting to burden him. But Thor wrapped his arms around her, comforting her. "This is the nature of politics and politicians, Betty. I'm sorry you're caught in the middle of it. Don't worry; your father is your father, and you are you. None of this is your fault."
