Chapter 44 - Purge (1)
The battle on the great plains ended in victory for the Reformist faction.
The dark mage Bamos met an inglorious death.
It was truly a meaningless death, his body exploding while summoning a demon.
On the other hand, Loen received fervent cheers from the soldiers for defeating the dark mage.
Regardless of the process, that was the result.
Already receiving support from soldiers calling her the Goddess of Victory and such, now she had repelled the dark mage and led the battle to victory…
She had reached a point where it wouldn’t be strange to call her the ruler of the Barrier.
However, Loen had no interest in such things at all.
Right now, she had only one concern.
Purge.
“I’ll leave the battlefield cleanup to you, Count.”
“Yes. But, it’s right after the battle, wouldn’t it be better to rest for a day before going?”
Loen shook her head at the Count’s concern.
“No. Once news spreads, fugitives will start appearing among them. That would be quite troublesome.”
The Count understood Loen’s intention.
Currently, all the Traditionalist nobles are gathered in Brinut, a city once ruled by the Count.
It can be seen as a kind of war command headquarters.
In other words, Loen planned to arrest them all at once, taking advantage of their gathering. Though I’m not sure if ‘arrest’ is the right word.
“I’ll take care of it, so don’t worry.”
Loen said with a slight smile.
The problem was that her words sounded very threatening when combined with her fierce impression and past actions.
The Count involuntarily shuddered.
Surely she’s not thinking of killing them all..?
Suppressing his ominous feelings, he bid her farewell.
“Please take care.”
Loen headed straight for Brinut with Psyche.
Brinut, once the most prosperous city in the Barrier.
That place, which would have been full of people’s vitality, had changed to a dark and gloomy atmosphere in a matter of months.
People disappearing every other day.
Knights causing trouble every other day.
And ominous rumors surrounding the city.
A deep shadow had settled on the faces of the city’s residents.
“It was better to live during Count Lidyte’s time..”
“That’s right.”
Two men walking on the street lamented.
A sharp-eared knight overheard their words.
“You two there. What did you just say?”
“Th-That’s..”
The men’s faces froze at the knight’s angry shout.
They had spoken in whispers, how did he hear?
Shing.
The knight who approached them with large strides suddenly drew his sword.
“Praising a loser who abandoned the city and ran away. You must have lost your minds completely. I’ll show you right here today what happens when you run your mouths carelessly.”
The men’s faces turned pale at the knight’s words. Realizing the seriousness, they prostrated themselves on the ground and begged for forgiveness.
“We were wrong! Please spare us!”
“Forgive us just this once!”
Tsk tsk.
People around looked on with regretful expressions.
Someone’s going to die again today without fail.
As everyone was watching the knight’s tyranny with bated breath, at that very moment.
Two women appeared on the street.
Due to their quite unusual combination, gazes from around started turning towards them one by one.
“A dragon-kin girl and a black-haired woman? Could it be..”
Currently in the Barrier, two rumors about Loen were fiercely opposing each other.
She’s a witch who bewitches people.
No, she’s a goddess who came to save the Barrier.
And people tend to believe what they want to believe, so.
Soon, whispering erupted here and there.
Is that woman the goddess we’ve only heard about?
She looks just like a witch though?
At this, the sharp-eared knight turned his head as he was about to bring down his sword.
“What’s all this noise..”
Those were his last words.
Because a mana blade that flew from the black-haired woman split him vertically.
Thud.
The knight fell to the ground, perfectly bisected.
People around swallowed their breath at that absurd and explicit sight.
Crazy.
They were all so shocked that they couldn’t even open their mouths.
Slaughtering a knight in the middle of the street!?
Soon after, the two women crossed through the crowd and walked towards the inner castle.
People who had been alternately looking at the knight (former) and the women in black uniforms followed behind them as if bewitched.
In a medieval society where proper entertainment was scarce, watching someone commit crazy acts was the best spectacle, so it was natural.
“Loen. The number of people is increasing, you know?”
“Leave them be.”
Although Loen said this, she actually felt burdened too.
But what could she do?
An hour ago, they had arrived in Brinut first by crossing the sky with flight magic, even before the messenger arrived to deliver the news.
Immediately after arrival, they completely neutralized the city guard protecting the city walls.
However, since the city guard was a system where city residents worked as professional soldiers, they didn’t kill them.
Afterwards, they walked down the main road connecting to the inner castle.
They killed every blue-cloaked knight they saw. There was no need for conversation.
Blood of knights was splattered along the road.
The problem was that people who witnessed this started following us one by one.
Strictly speaking, we’re openly carrying out a massacre right now, so why on earth are they following…
It was completely incomprehensible.
So I glanced around once, meaning ‘please just go away’, but.
“Goddess of blood and slaughter!”
“Execute all the evil nobles!”
“My daughter has been missing since she was taken by those bastards! Please deliver righteous judgment!”
They all looked at me with expectant eyes rather than being scared.
At this point, I just gave up.
Just maintain your distance so you don’t get caught up in the magic.
By the way, wasn’t it Goddess of Victory?
When did it change to blood and slaughter..
Loen looked forward again and moved on.
By now, the inner castle where the nobles were gathered and the walls surrounding it began to come into view.
And the only bridge connecting the city and the inner castle.
Dozens of knights were glaring at us with grim expressions on top of it.
‘Well, there’s no way there would be no response when we walked in causing such an obvious disturbance.’
Psyche asked.
“Loen, should I take care of them?”
“No.”
An appropriate spell to cast on them had just occurred to me.
I started casting a wide-area magic with both hands gathered.
At that moment, an angry voice burst out from the front.
“Stop! Do you know where you dare to-!”
“Isn’t this Brinut?”
Psyche answered instead.
“You evil witch! We’ll make you pay for slaughtering people in the city!”
“We only killed knights, not people though?”
“..”
Someone was at a loss for words.
They too, being knights guarding nobles, already knew what kind of beings the two women before them were.
Nevertheless, they had to protect the lords they served. So they took their positions here, overcoming their fear.
However, what they hadn’t predicted was that the two women were inspectors.
Unlike the commoners, they recognized the identity of the black uniforms at a glance.
“Captain, isn’t that.. an Inspection Corps uniform?”
“I know. But that doesn’t mean we’re going to back down from here, right? Pretend you don’t know.”
“But, given that they’ve appeared here, perhaps the battle on the great plains too..”
“Enough!”
Feeling the spreading uneasiness, the captain leading the knights stepped forward, thinking this wouldn’t do.
“We’ve already figured out that you two are mages with outstanding skills. But surely, you don’t think we’re guarding this place without any countermeasures?”
The captain took something out from his bosom and held it up.
“This is a wide-area magic defense artifact passed down for generations in the family of the lord I serve-. Argh!”
Before he could finish speaking, Loen, who had finished casting, uttered the activation word.
“Holy Light Descent.”
Boom-
An enormous amount of light poured down from the sky towards the bridge.
A scene as if God was delivering judgment upon the earth unfolded before their eyes.
The descending holy light collided with the huge protective barrier surrounding the knights on the bridge. But that only lasted for a very brief moment. The barrier was penetrated. The knights melted away painfully, screaming.
Aaaagh!
The screams continued for a while and then abruptly stopped.
By now, the holy light had also subsided.
All those knights had evaporated without leaving even a handful of ashes.
“That..”
“Uh, um.”
The crowd behind, who had been cheering “It’s judgment!”, closed their mouths.
They couldn’t help but be bewildered after witnessing dozens of knights melting away alive.
“Loen, even the bridge is gone?”
As Psyche said, due to poor power control, even the bridge connecting the inner castle and the city had melted away.
“Since this is the first time I’m using this magic.. Let’s just fly from here on.”
“Okay.”
Loen flew towards the inner castle carrying Psyche on her back.
The crowd behind watched this scene blankly.
Perhaps because it was a place where nobles who value their own lives terribly were gathered, as soon as we crossed the walls surrounding the inner castle, all kinds of attacks poured down.
Whoosh!
Boom!
A shower of arrows, ballistas, attack magic, etc. continuously pounded on Loen’s protective barrier.
“Wow~ How scary. Why are these people doing this here?”
Psyche asked why such high-quality forces didn’t participate in the battle on the great plains.
How would I know?
“They probably prepared for any contingencies. Or they thought they could win the battle sufficiently without the forces here. Anyway, Psyche. Clear out the ones on the walls first.”
“Yes!”
Psyche fell towards the top of the wall.
Thud!
Psyche landed in a posture with one hand on the ground.
“Die!”
A knight’s sword flew towards her head.
Clang!
“..?”
“Ow.”
The mana-coated sword bounced off.
While the knight was blankly staring at his sword, Psyche grabbed the knight’s sword with her bare hand.
Crack.
And she exerted strength in her hand and shattered the sword with her bare hand.
At this sight that defied common sense, the knights surrounding Psyche, including the owner of the sword, began to back away slowly.
How on earth are we supposed to catch that…
“Clench your teeth tightly.”
Swish-
The moment Psyche gave a warning to the knight who was blankly staring at the broken sword,
a huge arrow flew in from the side.
A 1m long ballista arrow reached right in front of her nose.
Whack! Psyche raised her hand and grabbed the huge arrow.
“That surprised me.”
The surrounding knights were at a loss for words.
Catching a ballista arrow with bare hands?
Their morale plummeted.
How could their morale be intact when they had to face an invincible monster?
Soon after, Psyche, who had smashed the knight in front of her, began a slaughter on top of the wall.
Every time she moved at high speed and threw out her fists and feet, someone’s scream echoed.
As long as there was no 4-star knight who could match her, the outcome was a foregone conclusion.
And Loen, who had crossed the wall and reached near the place where the mages were gathered.
There, about 10 mages were looking up at Loen while swallowing their saliva.
Conversely, Loen looked down at them.
A red-eyed witch with black hair fluttering, floating in the sky.
The mages gulped.
“…”
“…”
Their bodies were trembling, but they couldn’t back down like this.
And perhaps, with this much numerical difference… perhaps.
In the suffocating silence, they stretched out their hands and uttered activation words.
Mana Cannon!
10 beams cut through the air and rushed towards Loen.
Loen calmly watched the beams approaching, cutting through the air.
When the beams had approached to some extent.
Loen stretched out her hand and uttered the same activation word.
Bang!
With an explosive roar, their beams and Loen’s beam collided.
The surrounding space distorted due to the enormous amount of mana pushing against each other.
A fierce power struggle ensued between the beams, and a winner was quickly decided.
“Damn it.”
The magic commander standing in the center of the group of mages muttered.
I should have just stayed cooped up in the magic tower and continued my research.
Wanting to receive special treatment. Coming all the way to this frontier…
This is why people should know their place…
His thoughts stopped there. Or rather, they had to stop.
Loen’s beam engulfed the magic commander.
“Chain Beam.”
Loen’s second attack followed.
The time-lag attack that only double-casting mages can use took the lives of the remaining mages in an instant.
The battle, which was close to one-sided slaughter, ended.
Psyche approached Loen, who had landed on the ground.
The two slowly walked towards the castle gate.
As they got closer to the gate, someone’s shouts could be heard from inside the castle.
It was the sound of ordering to block the gate with everything they could.
Loen, who had stopped walking right in front of the gate, held out her hand to Psyche.
“Give me that.”
“Just a moment.”
Psyche unbuttoned the top part of her uniform and put her hand between her breasts, then took out a rolled-up paper.
Are you crazy!
Why did you put it there?
As Loen looked at Psyche with such an expression, she said,
“It won’t ever fall out if I put it here.”
“…”
Loen, sighing, read down the list of purge targets written on the paper.
There were no Grade 3s.
Most were Grade 1 or Grade 2 purge targets.
Loen, who skimmed through their crimes, thought.
They’re not human.
These were truly people mad with power.
Loen nodded and handed the paper back to Psyche.
“Let’s go in.”
“Yes!”
Boom!
With a thunderous roar, the thick castle gate shattered to pieces.
Through the dust, two inspectors revealed themselves.
