Chapter 342: Special Bloodline (4)
— Flame, watch out!
As Flame’s wings of light were torn apart and she began to plummet, the angels immediately sent heavenly mana to restore her wings.
Clang—!!!
In an instant, a divine golden shield appeared before her, intercepting a massive scythe cloaked in a dark crimson aura.
The force of the impact sent her hurtling backward, but thankfully, she remained unscathed.
— Are you okay?!
"I’m fine, but..."
Her stomach churned.
Too much heavenly mana had surged through her body all at once.
— S-Sorry about that."No. Without you, I’d be dead by now."
Tightening her grip on her staff, Flame glared at the enemy in front of her.
Alpha—the Angel Hunter.
‘Angelus...?’
She hadn’t even heard of such beings before. Not even in the novel this world was based on.
“You called yourself an Angel Hunter... Why do you hunt angels? I don’t get it.”
Flame demanded answers, but Alpha casually shrank his giant black scythe down to a staff-like size and held it in one hand.
“Does a cat need a reason to hunt a mouse?”
“... Are you saying you plan to devour angels?”
“I’m not done talking, Angel. I’m the predator, and you’re the prey. We’ve lived trembling in fear as prey until now.”
“What…?”
Flame couldn’t make sense of his words.
Angels were barely mentioned in history, and even the novel offered little insight into them.
“The ancient tale of angels and demons invading the mortal world may have been reduced to mere fairy tales, but the hatred embedded in that truth has never disappeared. It’s carved into our souls… And passed down to me.”
“The invasion of angels and demons…”
Flame pressed her lips tightly together.
Suddenly, something black erupted from behind Alpha’s back.
‘Wait… Is that—?!’
There was no mistaking it.
Though he bore only one, it was unmistakably a bat-like wing… a demon’s wing.
‘What’s happening?! Someone answer me!’
Flame immediately reached out to the angels through telepathy. Their panicked voices echoed back.
— It’s a misunderstanding!
— We didn’t invade the mortal world!
— We were trying to protect it!
‘Then what the hell is this story about?!’
Whether the angels had sought to protect or invade the world, it didn’t change the fact that the victims saw themselves as wronged.
Flame knew she needed to gather more information. No matter what.
— Please believe us, Flame!
— Hundreds of years ago... After the Progenitor Mage left Aether World, we descended to the mortal realm to counter the growing influence of demons who sought to exploit the Twelve Divine Moons' dormant powers.
“The Twelve Divine Moons…?”
The revelation struck Flame like a bolt of lightning, leaving her momentarily speechless.
Why would demons want the power of the Twelve Divine Moons?
'Fine, whatever. But if you sided with humans, why can’t you descend to the earth anymore? There are too many unanswered questions!’
— Well… That’s…
The angels hesitated for a moment before one of them let out a sigh and spoke.
— Some of us… succumbed to the allure of the Twelve Divine Moons’ power. Instead of stopping the demons, they tried to claim that power for themselves.
— But don’t worry! We completely purged and sealed those traitors! Nothing like that will ever happen again!
"What the—?!"
Flame nearly yelled in disbelief at the sudden flood of critical information, but before she could voice her frustration, Alpha’s voice cut through the tension.
"From the heavens… divine mana is pouring into you."
Flame’s eyes widened in shock.
No one had ever noticed this fact before.
Alpha gazed upward, as if staring through her—straight into the celestial realm where the angels resided.
"Strange… How did you descend to this world? And more importantly, why do you look so human?"
"I told you already. I’m not an angel—I’m human."
Flame stretched out her hand, conjuring fire and ice that danced together in a dazzling display.
"I can simply wield all magic that exists in this world—including angel magic."
"All magic, huh?"
Alpha tilted his head slightly, his sharp eyes scrutinizing her.
"Then… Can you wield demonic magic as well?"
"That…"
No.
It was impossible.
The thought had never even crossed her mind.
She could use the attributes of every race in existence—even the divine magic of angels. But why couldn’t she wield demonic magic?
“‘All magic’ was a lie. If you had been able to use demonic magic, I would have believed you.”
Alpha pointed his scythe at her again.
Proving she wasn’t an angel no longer mattered, not after revealing her wings.
The window for negotiation had slammed shut.
"Fine then…"
She broke out in a cold sweat, racking her brain for a solution, but nothing came to mind.
Her opponent’s power level was at least Class 7—possibly higher.
On top of that, he seemed capable of wielding some of the most destructive demonic magic.
‘Even though his ability to wield demonic magic is unrefined, his overwhelming Class 7 mana more than compensates for it.’
In contrast, Flame’s combat ability barely reached Class 5.
While differences in class could sometimes be overcome through experience and tactics, Flame was only in her second year at the academy. She lacked the experience needed to bridge such a massive gap in power.
‘Help…’
For a brief moment, Baek Yu-Seol crossed her mind, but she quickly shook her head.
He wasn’t some knight in shining armor who would conveniently appear whenever she was in trouble.
She had to handle this herself.
"Fine. I’ll fight you—as an angel against a hunter. But move the battle to another location."
"Why should I agree to that?"
"You said the war between angels and demons caused innocent casualties. Are you going to create more victims today?"
Flame gestured toward the civilians huddled behind her.
Alpha scoffed.
"What a convenient excuse. Fine. I’ll honor the name of the Angelus Clan and accept. But don’t fool yourself… stalling for time won’t change the outcome."
Flame knew Alpha had seen through her stalling tactics, but it didn’t matter. She had already expected to be exposed and simply leveraged his pride to gain time.
"We’ll fight over there—just beyond Illa Jeridon Reverse’s Mountain."
At her words, Alpha’s expression briefly stiffened.
But bound by his pride and prior agreement, he had no choice but to comply.
"Fine. But remember this—no matter what tricks you try, they’ll be useless against me."
With that, Flame unfurled her wings and took off into the sky.
Alpha followed, but unlike Flame’s radiant golden wings, his bat-like wings didn’t move at all.
They seemed purely symbolic, giving the impression that he was levitating rather than flying.
"W-What do we do now…?"
Thud.
As the two disappeared into the distance, several civilians collapsed onto the ground, unconscious.
They had been unable to withstand the oppressive dark mana radiating from Alpha.
Flame’s friends turned to Eisel, their faces pale and stricken with anxiety.
“C-Can Flame win on her own?”
“We need to help her...”
“... But what could we even do? You saw that magic earlier. Only professors can handle spells of that caliber. If we go, we’ll die instantly!”
“And they went to Reverse Mountain. You know it’s impossible to reach that place through normal means...”
Reverse Mountain hung upside down beneath the clouds, its jagged peaks piercing the sky like fangs. Without specialized flying methods or airships, it was completely unreachable.
To make matters worse, violent whirlwinds and raging mana storms surrounded the area. Ordinary flight magic would fail instantly, sending any mage tumbling to their death.
The girls exchanged hopeless glances, despair creeping into their expressions.
At that moment, Eisel stepped forward.
“E-Eisel?! Where are you going?!”
“Stay here. If you follow me, I’ll be mad.”
“What? Wait—you’re not seriously going after them, are you? No matter how skilled you are, if you go there…”
It’ll be suicide.
The words died in the girl’s throat, but the unspoken warning hung heavily in the air.
Eisel, however, simply smiled softly.
“Who knows? We won’t find out until we try. I’m not scared, probably because I’ve had someone by my side who always makes the impossible possible.”
Despite her confident words, her clenched fists were trembling. However, she managed to keep it hidden.
“Flame has helped me countless times… As her friend, I can’t stand by and do nothing.”
With those parting words, Eisel spread her wings of ice and soared high into the sky.
Unlike ordinary flight magic, which depended on air currents, Eisel’s ice-based magic thrived in cold, turbulent conditions.
‘Ugh…!’
But as expected, her Class 5 magic was far too weak to withstand the mana storms surrounding Illa Jeridon Mountain.
Although being 18 years old and already at Class 5 was an incredible achievement, it wasn’t nearly enough to face a Class 7 Angel Hunter.
‘There has to be a way.’
This time, she couldn’t rely on Baek Yu-Seol to rescue them.
Although she had already sent an emergency signal to Stella Academy, it would take time for the main force to arrive.
Until then, Flame and Eisel would have to face this situation alone and survive.
Whoosh—!
Eisel focused all her energy on her wings, pushing through the dense clouds that surrounded Illa Jeridon Mountain.
The moment she broke through the mist, her vision cleared, unveiling the awe-inspiring sight of the mountain’s inverted peak.
To her surprise, the chaos of the storms faded within the clouds, leaving the area eerily calm.
Thanks to the stillness, she was able to stand on the upside-down summit, fully absorbing the natural mana that saturated the space.
The cold air stung her lungs as she breathed in, but instead of pain, she felt an odd sense of peace.
‘What is this…?’
Eisel raised her hands and stared at her wrists in confusion.
‘It’s… warm.’
Even as an ice mage, Eisel wasn’t immune to the cold.
She could resist it better than others, but she had never experienced warmth in such frigid conditions.
What was this strange sensation?
It reminded her of…
Not her mother, but—
Her father—Duke Isaac Morph.
Eisel’s blue eyes wandered across the vast, inverted mountain.
Whoooosh…!
The icy wind howled, yet it felt like a gentle touch brushing against her skin.
Feeling a touch in the cold?
She shook her head, dismissing the thought.
There was no way the wind could feel like a human touch.
As a mage who studied truth through logic and calculation, she refused to believe in such superstitions.
This wasn’t some mystical sign of her father’s soul reaching out to her.
And besides, his soul had likely already passed on, set free by Baek Yu-Seol’s unique magic.
Eisel closed her eyes, taking a deep breath before slapping her cheeks to focus.
And then—clarity struck her.
"This entire Reverse Mountain… It's my father’s magic. One of the countless legacies he left behind long ago."
Was it fate?
Or just coincidence?
It didn’t matter.
Whether guided by fate or chance, Eisel had found herself standing within Morph’s legacy.
"With this… I can save Flame."
And right now, nothing else mattered.
Because, for the first time, hope was within reach.
