Chapter 349: Freshman (3)
It wasn’t particularly surprising that two airships flew in from Stella within a single day to rescue a student.
Stella was known for its strict welfare policies regarding its students.
Thanks to such measures, it boasted one of the highest rates of graduates remaining in the Stella Knights, Stella Magic Tower, or prestigious academic research groups.
This rescue mission attracted considerable attention, especially since it was initiated by three first-year Class S girls who were already the talk of the academy.
Upon hearing the news, Baek Yu-Seol returned immediately from the Adolevit Kingdom and headed to find Eisel, who was currently resting in her dormitory due to post-battle fatigue.
It was highly unusual for a male student to enter the girls’ dormitory so openly, but one of Baek Yu-Seol’s skills was moving unnoticed.
“Oh my, isn’t that Baek Yu-Seol?”
“Yeah. The first-year guy.”
“He’s a second-year now.”
“But why is he in the girls’ dormitory…?”
It seemed his ability to slip by unnoticed no longer worked. No matter where he went, he inevitably drew attention, making it impossible to move quietly.
Ignoring the murmurs of the senior girls staring at him, he approached Eisel’s private dormitory and knocked.
“Hey, you in there?”
An unexpected voice responded from inside.
“Hmm? Old man?”
A moment later, the door clicked open, revealing not short black hair but long hair… Flame, who had grown out her hair, peeked out. She looked around with wide eyes before making eye contact with Baek Yu-Seol and grinning.
“Come in.”
As he hesitated and stepped inside, he saw Eisel curled up in the corner of her bed, completely wrapped in a blanket, with only her head sticking out and shivering.
“What the… Eisel, are you okay?”
“Y-Yeah…”
Her normally neat, sky-blue hair was now tangled, and her flushed cheeks suggested a fever.
“You said you weren’t hurt and came straight back to the dormitory.”
“Uh… This is a little different…”
Achoo!
Before she could finish speaking, Eisel pulled her head back into the blanket and sneezed. It was clear she had caught a cold.
“I’m fine…”
“Really?”
She clutched the blanket tightly with both hands, looking like a trembling, rain-soaked puppy.
“It’s because of magic.”
Flame explained as she dragged a chair over and placed it in front of Baek Yu-Seol.
“We went to a ski resort recently. We had to stop by Illa Jeridon Reverse Mountain for a bit.”
“I see.”
Baek Yu-Seol immediately understood after hearing just those words.
The girls were already used to how quickly he caught on, so they didn’t bother adding any further explanations. They trusted that someone like Baek Yu-Seol, who seemed to know everything, would piece it all together with just a small hint.
‘I didn’t expect her to catch a cold.’
Baek Yu-Seol looked at Eisel with sympathy.
Mages, particularly those who wielded ice magic, rarely caught colds. The only times they did were when they pushed their magic far beyond its limits.
Even in the game, it was never revealed whether she had caught a cold after visiting Illa Jeridon.
But right now, the more pressing issue was the fact that Eisel was visibly shivering before his eyes.
“I tried using healing magic since anti-pyretics didn’t work…”
But it didn’t seem to have much effect.
Baek Yu-Seol, who had been staring intently at Eisel, suddenly reached out into thin air. After rummaging through his subspace, he pulled out several red-tinted leaves.
“Hold this in your mouth.”
“…?”
Although Eisel looked confused, she obediently bit down on the leaves with her pink lips.
Baek Yu-Seol then used a dropper to release a few green droplets onto the leaves.
“Keep it there for 10 minutes. It should help lower your fever a bit. It’s for cooling down heat caused by an overload of ice magic.”
“What… What is this?”
“It’s said to be an herb that ancient humans sought from divine beings when they caught colds.”
“D-Divine beings? Something like that actually exists?”
“They do.”
“… Have you met one?”
He had.
In the game.
It was unlikely that divine beings still existed in the current Aether World, but since he had technically encountered them before, Baek Yu-Seol simply nodded.
“That’s fascinating…”
After confirming that Eisel’s fever had started to go down, Baek Yu-Seol finally allowed himself to sit down.
“So what exactly happened?”
“You probably already heard the gist of it… We were attacked by some crazy mage.”
An attack by a mage, not a dark mage? That wasn’t a common occurrence in this day and age.
“That guy… He called himself an ‘Angel Hunter.’ Do you have any idea what that means?”
“Angel Hunter?”
Baek Yu-Seol frowned. He was clearly puzzled. ‘What’s that?’
He had never heard of it before.
Instinctively, he activated his Sentient Spec, a tool that could scan and search for related information. However, the results were sparse and practically useless.
[Angel Hunter? An old NPC mentions it, but does anyone actually know what it means??]
> I know what it is.
> What is it?
> Groot?
> You wanna die, idiot?
> Don’t swear. I seriously know!
> What is it?
> Fla…
> Hey…
‘What the heck is this?’
Even the few threads he found were complete nonsense. Most posts mentioned an NPC referencing ‘Angel Hunters,’ but no one appeared to have figured out what it actually meant.
It appeared that no one had ever gotten to the bottom of it.
“Well… I’m not sure either.”
“I see…”
After ten minutes passed, Eisel, who had been holding the leaf in her mouth with her eyes closed, suddenly blinked and pulled it out.
Her wide, startled blue eyes gave off an adorably innocent reaction, and Baek Yu-Seol couldn’t help but feel a sense of satisfaction.
“I’ll give you a fresh one.”
“... Okay.”
Watching the now-silent Eisel stirred an unfamiliar sense of protectiveness in Baek Yu-Seol.
“Haa…”
Flame let out a sigh. She propped her chin on her hand as she leaned against the table.
“The guy who tried to kill me called himself an Angel Hunter. He said angels would bring ruin to the Aether World or something.”
“Angels? Why?”
“Huh? Even you don’t know?” Flame tilted her head. “I heard that the Twelve Divine Moons were created from angels and demons. And if an angel gains the power of the Twelve Divine Moons… Well, something was supposed to happen, but he died before he could explain the rest.”
Flame tried to sound casual, but the gloom in her eyes betrayed how unsettling it must have been to witness a mage die right before her eyes.
‘The Twelve Divine Moons came from angels?’
Baek Yu-Seol couldn’t make sense of it. The statement left him baffled, and no immediate thoughts came to mind.
Then suddenly—
Thud!
It was as if a hammer had struck his head, forcing a vague and ominous realization to surface.
“… Flame. That Angel Hunter said what? That angels were after the Twelve Divine Moons, and that it would bring about ruin?”
“Huh? Y-Yeah, that’s what he said.”
Pluck!
“Ah…!”
Baek Yu-Seol pulled the leaf out of Eisel’s mouth again, causing her to pout. Ignoring her reaction, he handed her a fresh leaf and sank deeper into thought.
‘How many angels and demons even remain in this world?’
He combed through his memory, but no specific figures came to mind.
Every instance of angels or demons had only appeared as illusions or spiritual forms and never as actual physical beings.
The same went for demons.
‘It’s certain. Even in Aether World Online, angels and demons were never introduced as full-fledged characters.’
There were, however, a small number of characters who wielded demonic powers.
Just as Flame was born with the power of angels, there were hidden races scattered throughout the world that inherited the powers of demons from ancient times.
‘No… I’m not really sure.’
In the game, Flame was established as someone who possessed the ability to communicate with beings known as angels.
Because of this, Baek Yu-Seol couldn’t definitively say that angels didn’t exist.
‘But it’s still strange…’
Angels were said to be sealed away in the Celestial Realm - a mysterious continent in the sky - where they supposedly spent their days singing and dancing among themselves.
Then why?
Why hadn’t Elthman Elwin, the most curious scholar, ever discovered it?
Why hadn’t even Class 9 mages - those who reached the pinnacle of magic - ever acknowledged the existence of angels?
“Flame.”
“Huh?”
“You can communicate with angels, right?”
“Uh, yeah… I can.”
“Can you send them a message for me?”
Flame wasn’t sure why Baek Yu-Seol suddenly made the request, but seeing his serious expression, she nodded firmly.
“I’ll try.”
Closing her eyes and focusing, Flame immediately felt a tunnel opening toward the Celestial Realm, and a telepathic connection was established.
This time, as she concentrated even harder, images began to form.
In her vision, beautiful angels with golden hair were walking through a field of vividly colorful flowers. They wore white dresses resembling those from ancient Greek and Roman times.
As soon as they noticed Flame’s connection, they rushed toward her excitedly, like curious children trying to peek into a tiny camera.
— Wow! Flame! Are you okay?
— You didn’t get hurt after that, right?
“I’m fine. But more than that…”
“Wait.”
“Huh…?”
The moment Baek Yu-Seol confirmed that Flame was communicating with the angels, he suddenly placed both hands on her small head and brought his forehead to hers.
Flame’s ears turned bright red as she nervously closed her eyes, while Baek Yu-Seol focused his concentration.
Then, for a brief moment, their minds became linked.
‘I can see it.’
Baek Yu-Seol could now see the place Flame was looking at.
‘And I can hear it.’
He could also hear the voices Flame was hearing.
After a brief moment of sharing her senses, Baek Yu-Seol pulled away and broke the connection.
“Huh? Wait… Is it done?” Flame asked, still confused.
“It’s enough.”
“But you didn’t even talk to them!”
“There was no need. I couldn’t understand what they were saying anyway.”
“What? But they were speaking normally…”
“Well, what sounded ‘normal’ to you wasn’t normal to me.”
Baek Yu-Seol wiped the sweat from his brow before carefully asking
“Flame, describe exactly what you saw and heard. What did the angels look like?”
“They had golden hair…And they were singing while holding golden lyres. There were musicians playing large harps too… And some angels were dancing.”
“Could you understand their lyrics?”
“Huh? Yeah. They were singing stuff like, ‘We’ll be happy forever,’ or something like that.”
“… I see.”
Baek Yu-Seol nodded, then let out a deep sigh.
“Listen carefully. For a moment, I connected my mind to yours to observe what you were seeing. I wanted to know how the angels lived.”
He paused, his voice growing colder.
“But I didn’t see what you saw.”
“… What?”
“All I saw was the night sky. An endless expanse of stars and a sprawling Milky Way.”
“What? Don’t mess with me. That doesn’t make any sense! I saw them clearly!”
“I didn’t hear their song either. All I heard was an eerie hum, like ultrasonic waves and strange mechanical noises.”
It was reminiscent of Jupiter’s song—an eerie yet mesmerizing noise, like the vibrations emitted by a planet, converted into frequencies audible to the human ear.
It was a sound that could never be described as a voice or a song.
“This doesn’t make any sense…”
Flame shook her head in disbelief, but Baek Yu-Seol remained resolute. He spoke only of what he had clearly seen and heard.
“Listen carefully, Flame. The angels you believe in… They’re nothing but illusions. What’s actually speaking to you… Are the constellations scattered across the night sky.”
And, furthermore—
‘I’m no different.’
Baek Yu-Seol was certain of it. After all, he knew about the Constellation Project, a mysterious force that existed somewhere out there in the heavens.
‘All the stars in that sky… Are watching my world.’
And now, he felt as though he was beginning to understand why.
