Chapter 6 - Purified Robe!
Chapter 6: Purified Robe!
“It’s better than nothing.”
Lu Jin shook his head.
He had nearly lost his life, and only with the help of the sandalwood wooden fish, a ritual instrument, was he able to successfully send off this vengeful spirit.
The merit he gained from it was barely enough to increase his spiritual power by just a few strands.
Let alone forging a Golden Body of Merit.
To achieve that, he would need at least a million times the amount of merit he had just obtained.
In other words, he would have to exorcise millions of vengeful spirits before he could even form the most basic Golden Body of Merit.
The risk was too great, and the reward too small.
It would be more practical for him to just recite Buddhist scriptures a few more times.
Still, unexpected rewards—no matter how small—were always welcome.
“The vengeful spirit has already been guided to enlightenment. You can transfer the payment for the ritual to my card later.”
Lu Jin stepped out of the bedroom and looked at the two Asama brothers, who were still paralyzed with fear. His voice was calm.
By convention, a Buddhist ritual should last until the deceased was properly buried.
However, this time, he had only been hired to exorcise the vengeful spirit.
If they wanted another ritual for the funeral, that would be a separate fee.
“Ah, understood!”
Asama Taro, snapping out of his daze, hurriedly nodded in agreement.
He looked at Lu Jin with cautious reverence, a trace of fear still lingering in his eyes.
After all, he had just witnessed his mother’s vengeful spirit being exorcised and guided to enlightenment by this young Buddhist practitioner.
There was no room for disrespect in his heart.
A master capable of transcending vengeful spirits was not someone an ordinary person like him could afford to offend.
“Wait, Master.”
Asama Jiro, who had been kneeling nearby, suddenly spoke up.
“We are willing to pay double the price to ask you to conduct another ritual for our mother during the funeral.”
“Jiro!”
Asama Taro frowned, displeased by his younger brother’s decision.
They had already paid double the normal rate to exorcise their mother’s spirit.
If they commissioned another ritual, they would have to pay yet another doubled fee.
Each of them would have to contribute a million yen.
That was no small sum.
“Brother, just in case… what if the vengeful spirit hasn’t truly been enlightened?”
Asama Jiro lowered his gaze and spoke softly.
Asama Taro immediately realized the issue.
He had seen firsthand just how terrifying that vengeful spirit had been.
If it somehow came back for revenge, they would be the ones to suffer.
Though it pained him to part with so much money, the threat of the vengeful spirit was far more terrifying.
Gritting his teeth, Asama Taro knelt down and begged Lu Jin to perform another ritual.
“All right.”
Seeing their reaction, Lu Jin could only nod in agreement.
After all, turning down easy money would just be foolish.
As for whether the vengeful spirit might return?
What a joke!
The descent of divine merit signified that, to this world, the spirit had already entered the cycle of reincarnation.
Come back to life?
Only if she could break through the Six Realms of Reincarnation and crawl back.
But if she could actually do that—
He wouldn’t even have to lift a finger. The Wrath of Heaven itself would strike her down.
All I would have to do was strike the wooden fish, chant some scriptures, and that’s it.
No risk, all reward.
Wasn’t this million yen essentially free money?
“Reciting scriptures is the same no matter where I do it…”
Funerals in Japan were simple.
There were only three main parts: the wake, the memorial service, and the farewell ceremony.
The wake took place the night before the person passed, while the remaining two ceremonies were held within a single day.
By the time the cremation and burial were complete, night had already fallen.
After being treated to a meal, Lu Jin took his leave.
By the time he arrived back at the temple, it was already deep into the night.
Perhaps due to cultivating spiritual power, despite the late hour, Lu Jin felt completely awake.
There was not a trace of drowsiness.
So, he simply sat down and began chanting scriptures, continuing until dawn.
Throughout the night, he recited the Buddhist scriptures over and over again.
The scattered strands of spiritual power he had accumulated unknowingly grew to fifty strands.
Aside from feeling more energetic, there didn’t seem to be any other effects for now.
Swish!
The first light of dawn shone on his face.
Lu Jin opened his eyes, and within them, a faint golden Buddhist radiance flickered.
Glancing at his system, he noticed his enhancement attempts had refreshed.
“What should I enhance this time?”
Lu Jin stroked his chin, lost in thought.
Suddenly, he recalled the vengeful spirit he had exorcised.
Come to think of it, this had been his first encounter with such an entity.
But if vengeful spirits existed in this world, did that mean there were even more powerful and sinister beings out there?
Even a single low-level vengeful spirit had nearly killed him.
If he encountered something even worse, he probably wouldn’t even have the chance to escape.
And such creatures… surely, there were many.
Though the odds of running into them were low, he didn’t want to leave his survival up to luck.
“I should focus on improving my survivability first.”
He had Buddhist scriptures for cultivation.
He had the sandalwood wooden fish for exorcisms.
The only thing missing was a defensive measure.
Lu Jin’s gaze fell upon the monk’s robe he was wearing.
Might as well take a gamble.
“Enhance!”
A flash of light.
Then, it dimmed instantly.
The first enhancement failed.
Lu Jin wasn’t surprised.
He immediately initiated a second enhancement.
With the first failure paving the way, the second enhancement was a success.
Swish!
Suddenly, the previously unremarkable monk’s robe radiated a golden Buddhist glow.
[Purified Robe]
[A Robe imbued with Buddhist power—impervious to water and fire, resistant to blades, immune to dust, and capable of repelling evil.]
