Chapter 11: We're Acquainted (2)
She was a delicate girl with flowing blonde hair.
She seemed to be on her way to class with several other girls.
"Hey, you're Shiniro, right?"
Krista greeted me with a smile as she noticed me.
She was holding a book as big as her body.
Some of the boys around us took a deep breath at the sight.
"Hey, good to see you, Kristal."
"It's not Kristal, it's Krista."
"Krista or Kristal, they're pretty much the same, right?"
I teased her by messing with her name, and she puffed out her lips.
"Not even close. I'd like it if you'd just call me by my real name…"
Her real name, huh? What would happen if I suddenly called her Historia here?
I had a pointless thought and naturally shifted the topic.
"Are you going to hand-to-hand combat class too?"
"Yeah, I'm just going to leave this book here."
"Oh, now that I look at it, the book's pretty worn out. You must study hard."
"I just take notes from class... Ah!"
I quickly snatched the book from her arms. She was so weak, it slipped right out of her hold.
I opened the book and teasingly said,
"Wait, wait. You haven't been studying at all, just doodling a lot, huh?"
"S-Shiniro, what are you doing?!"
"Are you an aspiring artist or something?"
Of course, there were no doodles, but I exaggerated as I looked at Krista.
At this, her friends behind her started giggling.
"There are no doodles at all! Give me my book back..."
Krista, her face flushed red, struggled to take the book back.
However, since our height difference was obvious, she couldn't get the book back easily.
She tried jumping to grab it, but her hands were nowhere near.
I found it funny and kept tossing the book around, not giving it back.
After a while of teasing and playing around, Krista suddenly started to tear up.
"…You're really…"
I froze as I saw her, realizing I might've gone too far.
I had teased her so much, I got carried away.
I quickly handed the book back to her.
"Ah, sorry... Here, take it back. Don't cry, you know I was just joking, right?"
She snatched the book from my hand with a look of indignation.
She glared at me with slightly red eyes.
"…That's too much."
With those words, Krista left the scene.
Her friends followed her shortly after.
I sighed and turned my head, only to find the boys staring at me with various expressions.
"...Shiniro, do you know Krista?"
"That… that was a bit much. Krista almost cried."
"Is she… is she an angel? And when she gets all teary, it makes her even prettier…"
Some of them asked if I knew Krista, and some were angry that I had made the angel cry.
I shook my head and looked at Reiner.
In the original story, he seemed to like Krista, but now he didn't even show much of an expression.
"Anyway, let's just go to the next class, Reiner."
"Reiner?"
No matter how many times I called him, he didn't respond.
Why is he acting so weird all of a sudden? I shook his shoulder and kept calling his name.
Finally, Reiner slowly opened his tightly shut lips and said,
"Shiniro..."
His gaze seemed calm, but he was staring in the direction Krista had gone.
"Krista, you said her name was?"
Reiner's calm expression gradually turned into one filled with joy.
The change was so strange that I got goosebumps on my arms.
"Krista…"
Reiner murmured her name softly. A twisted, unrecognizable smile played at the corners of his mouth.
I had known Reiner for a long time, but for the first time, he looked truly frightening.
Is he really just like in the original story?
Knowing how serious Reiner's situation was, I let out another heavy sigh.
"Sigh…"
