I, Gary, Want to Become a Pokemon Master

Chapter 2: Chapter 2: First Battle

"Well, since you're so eager to taste defeat, follow me to the backyard," Gary Oak said.

For the mission reward, Gary naturally had to battle with Orange.

"I won't lose," Orange didn't like Gary's arrogant attitude, as if he was certain Orange would lose. He immediately followed, determined to defeat Gary.

Gary was very familiar with the layout of Professor Oak's Laboratory and led Orange to the temporary venue behind the Laboratory.

Professor Oak and Yellow also followed, wanting to see the battle between the two rookie trainers.

Gary and Orange each walked to the command area on opposite sides.

"Then I will be the temporary referee," Professor Oak said with interest. Although the battle seemed low-level to him, it reminded him of his own early days. Seeing his grandson start as a rookie trainer like himself made him feel nostalgic and proud.

"The upcoming Pokémon duel between Gary and Orange will be 1v1. Please send out your Pokémon at the same time," Professor Oak announced seriously.

"Come out, Charmander!"

"I'll leave it to you."

Both released their Poké Balls simultaneously, sending out Charmander and Squirtle, respectively.

As a fire-type Pokémon, Charmander was quite aggressive. After only a few minutes apart, knowing it was going to battle, it immediately set aside its previous friendship with Squirtle and was ready for combat.

Squirtle was upset to see its former partner change so quickly. It yelled more and more impolitely, as if scolding Charmander.

Seeing both sides ready, Professor Oak announced, "The battle begins."

"Charmander, use Ember!" Orange commanded first.

As a rookie trainer, Orange had done some basic research and knew what skills Charmander had.

Charmander spread its arms and spat a ball of hot sparks at Squirtle.

"Hide in the shell," Gary ordered.

Squirtle easily blocked Ember by withdrawing into its shell, taking no damage.

Reality isn't a game, any attack can cause damage, but Orange's Charmander's Ember was too weak to even breach Squirtle's shell defense.

"What!" Orange was confused, not expecting Squirtle to block Ember so easily.

"Your Charmander's control over fire is too weak, such an Ember couldn't even boil water," Gary remarked.

"You..." Orange said angrily, "Since Ember is useless, Charmander, get close and grab it."

Charmander rushed towards Squirtle, moving at a steady pace.

Gary looked confident, and when Charmander was two meters away, he ordered, "Now, Water Gun!"

Squirtle quickly stuck its head out and shot a Water Gun, hitting Charmander directly in the face. Charmander howled as if a hot iron block had been doused with cold water, and its condition plummeted.

"He didn't fall down."

"Squirtle, use Tackle to finish Charmander off," Gary ordered.

Squirtle rushed at Charmander and, while Charmander was still recovering, tackled it to the ground.

"Well..."

Charmander fell, its eyes spinning.

"Charmander is unable to battle, Squirtle wins," Professor Oak declared.

"What! I... lost," Orange couldn't accept it. Losing his first Pokémon battle as a rookie was a real blow.

After all, Orange would earn two or three badges in the future. He was someone who gave up when faced with setbacks. Judging by the level of the gyms in Pewter City and Cerulean City, he was still at the rookie stage.

In other words, Orange nearly gave up the trainer path at the rookie stage.

"Don't be too upset, after all, the person who defeated you is the future Pokémon Master," Gary said arrogantly.

"You... wait, I'll surpass you sooner or later," Orange was furious at Gary's words.

"Don't say irrelevant things, take Charmander to the Laboratory for treatment quickly," Gary urged.

Without saying much, Orange returned Charmander to its Poké Ball and headed back to the Laboratory for treatment.

Yellow didn't stay any longer and set off on her journey.

Gary didn't rush to leave but went to the lounge in the Laboratory.

"System, what's in the deluxe gift package?" Gary had been curious about the contents of the deluxe gift package since he got Squirtle, and now he finally had time.

[The host only needs to silently say to open the deluxe gift package.]

"Open the deluxe gift package."

[Ding! Obtained the Eye of Insight (can view the basic data of Pokémon, can view the detailed attributes of your own Pokémon.)]

[Ding! Obtained the Bronze Crown (for Pokémon below Elite potential, potential level +1) x1]

[Ding! Obtained the Silver Crown (for Pokémon below Champion potential, potential level +1) x1]

[Ding! Obtained low-level Rare Candy x10]

Looking at the light and shadow image that appeared, Gary asked worriedly, "Will outsiders be able to see this?"

[Host, rest assured, everything in the system can only be seen by you.]

"That's good..." Gary almost scared himself, he didn't want the fact that he had the system to be exposed.

"The reward is okay."

The items in the deluxe gift package were quite standard, but the crowns were a nice touch, capable of enhancing a Pokémon's potential.

"Let's take a look at Squirtle's data," Gary was eager to see what his Squirtle was like.

Gary picked up the Poké Ball containing Squirtle and checked its attributes.

```
[Pokémon: Squirtle]
[Attribute: Water]
[Level: LV8]
[Potential: Elite]
[Ability: Torrent (When physical strength decreases, the power of Water-type moves increases by 1.5 times.)]
[Skills: Tackle, Tail Whip, Water Gun, Withdraw]
[Intimacy: 156 (maximum value 255)]
```

Sure enough, Gary was right. The Squirtle chosen had great potential, at the Elite level.

The ability was also very good. Fortunately, it wasn't the Rain Dish ability. Currently, the only Pokémon that can use the Rain Dish ability is Ludicolo.

However, Blastoise can mega evolve later on, so it doesn't really matter whether it has the Rain Dish ability or not. But in the early stages, it's better for Squirtle to have the Torrent ability, which is more convenient for training and offers more advantages in battle.
