Chapter 115: Memory
"No, if the view was the only treasure, he would not have erased all memories about Fogbound Lake in the legend. Does Uxie consider the memory of our whole journey here a treasure?"
Since he wasn't sure, Dante decided to ask Uxie himself. And after hearing his question, Uxie smiled.
"How perceptive. Well then, since you've noticed, will you choose to trade your memories for a treasure here? Or choose to keep them?"
Dante didn't answer immediately. Instead, he called over Pikachu and the others and explained to them the situation.
"What?! I knew it was too good to be true."
Pikachu looked at the colorful gems held in each of his paws and reluctantly let them go.
"So, we either keep memories about the journey, or forget them and choose a treasure here…"
Chatot rubbed his beak, his eyes looking contemplatively around the room, and then at Dante and the Guildmaster.
"Dan, I'm willing to forget about my memories. Choose an item that can strengthen our team."
Azumarill suddenly stepped forward. He had a resolute gaze as he stared at Dante in the eye.
"Count me in, too!"
Pikachu swept away his sorrow and walked beside Azumarill. The two looked at each other and smiled before turning towards Dante, their trust towards him clearly shown in their eyes.
From their experience with Zapdos, the two knew just how much treasures from a Legendary Pokemon like Uxie could help strengthen their team. If all it takes to get is a day's memories, then it's very worth the trade.
"You guys…"
Dante stared at the two, speechless. Do they really understand what it means to forget about the past few days of your life? Although Dante only had a vague idea himself, just the thought gave him a slight sense of unease.
"Guildmaster, please also make the decision for me. During this entire journey, I have been more of a burden than an assistance. If forgetting all about it can provide help to the Guild, then please, choose a treasure for my sake."
Chatot similarly stepped forward and made the same plea to Wigglytuff.
Dante furrowed his eyebrows. Is this really the right answer? Let one or two keep their memories while the others sacrificed theirs for a treasure?
Dante closed his eyes, recalling all the things Uxie said earlier.
"No. I don't think we need to sacrifice anyone."
"But-"
Dante shook his head, cutting off Azumarill's rebuttal with a wave of his tail.
"Earlier, Uxie said he would give us other rewards in addition to the view at Fogbound Lake."
"But, didn't he mean we had to trade our memories for other treasures?"
Pikachu tilted his head, confused about what Dante was trying to say.
"Don't forget, since he considers our memories as treasures, then what if the other reward he is talking about isn't something material. Right, The God of Knowledge, Uxie?"
"Hahaha, indeed. I did not expect you not to be blinded by greed and determine the true meaning behind my words."
Uxie looked at Dante, a pleased smile on his face. As the Legendary Pokemon who granted intelligence and knowledge to Pokemon and humans, seeing them use his blessing filled him with immense satisfaction.
On the side, Chatot looked at Dante with admiration. It seems another Legendary Exploration Team is certain to emerge in the near future.
"So…what do you mean?"
Pikachu scratched his head in confusion, tired of the word games Uxie and Dante were playing.
"It means, I can grant you any knowledge you desire- once."
"Any knowledge? Like, the location of all the treasures in the world?"
"Well, if that's what you wish to know."
"No! Wait! Let me think about it first!"
Uxie glanced at Pikachu with a trace of amusement on his face. He turned to look at the others, a silent inquiry in his eyes.
Dante lowered his head in thought. The chance to ask a question to the literal God of Knowledge is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for most. Before the expedition, he already formulated a question. But faced with the real Legendary Pokemon, Dante began to have second thoughts.
Wigglytuff, on the other hand, wasn't one to hesitate. He stretched his arms at Uxie and cheerily said.
"Friend, can you tell me the dungeon with the most delicious Apples?"
"Hmm, I believe you've already found it. After all, no apple can compare to those nurtured by the Tree of Life."
"Yay! I knew it!"
Wigglytuff cheered, taking out a Perfect apple from somewhere and beginning to munch on it.
Dante sweatdropped. Such a precious opportunity, it was almost wasted by the Guildmaster's waywardness. Fortunately, Uxie at least gave information about a so-called Tree of Life.
"Ehem. Esteemed Uxie, may I know a method to increase the strength and reputation of our guild?"
Chatot tried to hide his nervousness by acting pompous. But from his sweaty face, one could see how much this question mattered to Chatot.
"Hmm. You're an exploration guild, correct? Then these should help."
Uxie made a pink ball of light on the tip of his fingers, and flicked it. Chatot had no time to react before the ball entered his forehead, leading him to stare dumbly for a few seconds before waking up.
"I-Is this?"
"The history of famous Exploration Guilds, their rise and their downfall. Studying them should give you the answer you desire."
"Thank you, Uxie."
Chatot nodded in appreciation and closed his eyes to absorb the new knowledge in his head.
"Oh! I thought of a question! Do you know anything about my treasure?"
Pikachu raised his hand, running to Dante's side and asking to access the bag. Dante's mouth opened and closed, not sure whether or not to stop him. However, after some thought, he decided that there would not be much of a risk in letting him do what he wanted.
"Here it is. How about it, Uxie. Uxie?"
Uxie didn't respond. He stared at the innocuous stone fragment with a complex white pattern in Pikachu's hand.
"...where did you get this fragment?"
"By the beach? I found it when I was young. Looking for where it belongs is the main reason why I wanted to become an Explorer."
"I see…apologies, then. I am not able to disclose anything about this fragment. However, I can tell you one thing, this stone only appears in front of good-hearted Pokemon."
Uxie looked at this greedy Pikachu in a new light. It turns out, he was the chosen one.
"As compensation for being unable to answer, you can ask me two more questions."
Pikachu, who had been crestfallen about not finding a lead, perked up after hearing this. However, after brainstorming for a while he still can't think of anything.
"Hey Dan, what do you think I should ask?"
"I don't know, how about asking him about methods to become stronger."
"Huh? With you here, isn't it a waste to ask something so simple?"
Dante felt touched and a little amused after seeing Azumarill nod in affirmation to Pikachu's words. While he can ensure they can continuously get stronger, learning other methods that can accelerate the process is also important.
"Although I can make you stronger, I'm not omnipotent. Maybe Uxie knows of other methods to strengthen the three of us?"
"I see. Alright. Uxie, what are all the methods to strengthen us."
"Hmm, based on your current situation, I suggest increasing the mastery of either your moves or Ability."
"Ehhh, just that?"
Pikachu looked at Uxie in disappointment. That was like, one of the Exploration Team basics they have to know to get stronger. He thought Uxie would tell them something obscure like letting the energy flow in a specific pattern while meditating.
"I'm not done yet. For each wish, I can grant you all the knowledge about either one of the moves you've learned, or one of your Abilities. With this information, I'm sure you can master it in no time."
"Huh? Can't you just give us knowledge about all of them?"
"You can certainly try."
Uxie's smile in response to his question made Pikachu feel hairy. It seems some terrible consequences await him if he really did that.
After discussing with Dante and Azumarill, the three finalized the moves they wanted to master.
"Hm, won't you include that Teddiursa in your bag?"
Just as they stepped forward, Uxie's question caught them off guard. Dante was the first to react, hurriedly stepping back and hiding his Bag behind him.
"How did you know about Teddiursa?"
"You don't need to worry, I haven't read your memories. I had been watching your progress through the dungeon. Since he made it here, it's only fair he gets a chance to ask something as well."
Dante reluctantly accepted Uxie's explanation. After all, if he really read his memories, Uxie shouldn't be so calm right now.
He released Teddiursa from the Pokeball and explained the current situation to him. Then, the four of them stood in front of Uxie.
