Chapter 83 - Girl of Iron
Chapter 83 Girl of Iron

[Alert: ICARUS tech detected nearby.]
The surroundings were chaotic.
Over the past few weeks of soloing AP, I had learned that the gear boxes where you could unlock skills were always located in the middle of a hub swarming with users, a place where life and death were separated by the thinnest of margins.
The sound of gunfire coming from just 300 meters away was overwhelming, resembling the constant noise of roasting beans.
While it might sound like I’m exaggerating, the pattern of sessions under tournament rules was always similar.
Opening a box would spill out weapons, and whether you could gain the upper hand in a firefight often depended on whether you had skills. Of course, this made the skill activation zones places where lives were as fragile as fallen leaves.
Even in a tournament setting, this pattern persisted, with the action heating up as the game moved past the initial looting phase.
In short, I was heading to the hottest spot at the hottest time.
As I entered the largest building in the area, which housed various zones including control rooms and rest areas, I heard countless combat sounds echoing from inside, the walls having been hit hundreds or even thousands of times.
Most of it was gunfire, but among the sounds, there was also something resembling the noise of trying to block a torrential downpour with a single umbrella.
I knew the source of this sound all too well.
───Thudududu!
It was the sound of bullets hitting a bulletproof shield and bouncing off in all directions.
Though it looked like an ordinary shield, since it was part of the ICARUS gear, its performance far exceeded modern shields. When I had set up my gear with nanomachine activation, it could withstand minigun fire for several seconds.
Even here, not much had changed. Users who set up as tanks always stood at the forefront, taking the brunt of the enemy’s fire.
Anyway, that was the situation.
I took a deep breath and scanned my surroundings. Even though AP maps changed slightly or significantly each time, the skill activation device was always located in a fairly open area.
In other words, the chance of separating your head from your body while activating a skill was nearly 100%.
This led to many players avoiding these places. In the endgame, consumables like EMP grenades or jammers that could disable skills were available to prevent reliance on skills.
Piing!
“Ugh.”
Entering the building if you could call it that the people who had arrived first and were hiding everywhere detected my presence and started shooting excitedly.
At times like these, it was essential not to give any opportunity for engagement. Since I was the one entering where the enemies were entrenched, most of the advantage lay with them.
As I always said, engagement should be attempted only when numbers were equal or when I could gain the upper hand. There was no need to pick a fight with the enemy when I was at a disadvantage.
But things didn’t always go as planned.
As soon as I poked my head into the corridor, I heard a rattling sound and saw a flash at the end. I quickly took cover and reassessed the situation. One enemy was cautiously trailing me from behind, and another was blocking the route I had planned to take.
Most likely, the enemy wouldn’t try to engage in a shootout with me. They would probably use grenades to gain a safe advantage.
So….
I decided to limit the places where the enemy trailing me could throw a grenade.
First, I shot out all the lights on the nearby ceiling with my carbine. I did the same in the corridor I intended to pass through. As the area quickly plunged into darkness, I pulled a smoke grenade from my pocket.
This allowed for various scenarios to unfold.
Apart from that, I made one assumption the enemy approaching from behind would want to know my exact location. This way, they could increase their chances of killing me with a grenade.
Drawing on my extensive combat experience, I quickly reached a conclusion. I would provide false information about my location to the enemy behind me while using the smoke grenade to push back the enemy in front and create a relatively safe spot to avoid the grenade.
There was a major premise that the sound of the smoke grenade had to be concealed, but that could be sufficiently masked by the noise of the firefight.
Thus, I identified three conditions to escape the current situation.
As the puzzle pieces fell into place, the battle scenario I wanted emerged.
I took a deep breath and began.
───Thududududu!
I firmly shouldered my carbine, stepped into the corridor, and fired a burst at the last place I had seen the enemy. The flames lit up the darkness, and the battle continued in a straight line.
Naturally, both the enemy and I were behind cover, so there were few effective hits. But this noise was intended to inform the enemy behind me of my position.
I pulled out the smoke grenade with my tail, pulled the pin, and switched to single-shot fire to suppress at regular intervals. The sound of rolling and the smoke grenade’s activation was perfectly drowned out by the gunfire.
Fwoosh….
White smoke silently billowed out from the middle of the corridor. My front enemy retreated, while the enemy behind figured out that I was engaged in a firefight around the corridor.
I replaced my magazine and heard a clicking sound from behind. The enemy was prepping a grenade. Without hesitation, I sprinted silently down the corridor, lying flat on the ground, covering my ears, and opening my mouth.
There was no concern about being shot by the front enemy. The smoke was thick, and they had retreated due to the grenade I had thrown.
A solid object hit the wall, bounced off, and fell to the floor.
A tremendous noise and vibration shook the corridor.
───Boom!
“…Ugh…!”
The acrid smell of gunpowder and the countless pieces of shrapnel and concrete fragments filled the air, enough to make my ears ring.
If I had stayed where I was, I would have likely been blown to bits since it was a simple connecting corridor without cover.
A dull thud sounded again. Another grenade. No one in the preliminary rank took any chances.
Two consecutive explosions rocked the building.
As the aftermath subsided, I got up and silently ran toward the ground zero.
No one had ever thrown three grenades in one spot. Two were fine, but three was a waste of time and could attract attention if they failed to kill their target.
In other words, the enemy behind me would now stop throwing and head my way.
Closing the distance with the enemy was always welcome.
───Clunk!
“….”
The sound of a shield unfolding.
If I had been an ordinary user, I would have cursed the enemy for not letting their guard down until the end. Especially in such a narrow space, a shield and pistol combination could withstand any adversity.
Frankly, an ordinary user would have died at this point.
But never forget the shield it was always the person wielding it.
As the edge of the shield quickly moved into the darkened corridor where the lights had shattered, I leaped.
Like a rhinoceros,
I charged the enemy with my body.
The shield had a broad surface area perfect for such a move.
“Gasp…!”
While the shield could take bullets, even with ICARUS gear assistance handling it still required human strength.
With a thud, the combined mass of two people hit the wall. I immediately lifted my body and grabbed the opponent’s right wrist with my left hand, forcibly dropping the pistol and adding my right hand’s strength to the left.
Then, gripping the opponent’s right wrist with both hands, I pulled and flipped them over.
───Thud!
The enemy fell with their shield in their left hand, exhaling all the breath from their lungs.
At that moment, I pressed down on the shield with my foot, preventing movement, and aimed my MK18 Mjölnir at the enemy’s head.
After a few trigger pulls, my kill count increased.
I took a deep breath, inhaling the acrid gunpowder smoke.
“…Ha.”
Except for the person who had fled earlier, there were no more enemies around.
From the multipurpose pouch on my waist, I pulled out five Lapua Magnum rounds and loaded them into the magazine. The familiar clicking sound echoed in my ears.
Every moment of life was truly a struggle.
The session wasn’t over yet.
