chapter 37
Chapter 37
“The visit from Sir Atric is scheduled for tomorrow, and there’s something I need you to do. When he enters my sister’s room, you should go in at the same time. Bring me the letter meant for Lord Diego and deliver it to my room.”
“If I do that, Sir Atric will find out that I’m a double agent…”
“Yes, that’s exactly what we want.”
She had never hidden the fact that she was using Amy. If anything, she had made it obvious on purpose.
Ebony had already predicted that Philip would find out and try to use Amy as leverage against her.
She also knew he would demand something in return for keeping quiet.
“I told him to propose to my sister.”
“A proposal?”
Thanks to Philip Atric blindly following her plan, Ebony was able to make an outrageous demand.
“Yes, propose to my sister.”
“…What? A proposal?”
She wanted him to marry Irene. By tying them together, she would take revenge on those who had betrayed her in her past life all at once.
“Marriage? Sorry, but I have no intention of marrying your sister.”
“Just stay engaged. I plan to take my sister’s man away from her—just like she did to me.”
“Haha, so you’re saying you want to steal me away from Irene by marrying me?”
Of course, Philip, who had been eyeing a higher social status through marriage, couldn’t accept such an idea at first.
But after hearing Ebony’s detailed plan, he quickly changed his mind.
As long as he could become the husband of a spirit user and a part of the prestigious Dominique family, the means didn’t matter to him.
“A marriage… so you’re tying them together.”
“Exactly.”
Finishing her words, Ebony took a big bite of her muffin. She spoke cruel words with an innocent face, unfazed by the gravity of her actions.
Diego, who had been silently watching, smirked and poured her more tea.
“You’re scarier than I thought.”
“Are you disappointed?”
“No, why would I be? I don’t turn away from my kind.”
With a sly smile, Diego took out an envelope from his jacket and placed it on the table.
Seeing his gesture, Ebony carefully broke the wax seal.
Inside was a single sheet of paper, enchanted with a spell that captured a fleeting image.
The image showed a small figure in a hooded robe running urgently somewhere. As soon as the warmth of her fingers touched the paper, the image vanished.
“Who is this?”
“Your sister.”
“Irene? But why is someone tailing her…?”
She was about to ask why he was investigating Irene but quickly stopped herself.
“How did you find her?”
“By chance. The Magnus Knights spotted a suspicious woman in the underworld. When they looked into it, it turned out she was connected to the Dominique family.”
“So Irene was… in the underworld?”
“Yeah. She didn’t just wander in by accident. She was clearly in contact with someone there.”
Ebony remembered how Irene had interacted with the underworld before.
In the past, she had pretended to be a spirit user to claim her place as the true daughter of the Dominique family.
She had used drugs from the underworld to suppress Ebony’s powers and black magic to imitate them.
Since Ebony had already revealed her true abilities, she expected Irene to change tactics.
‘If she’s making such an obvious move, that works in my favor.’
If Irene stuck to predictable actions, it would make Ebony’s plans much easier.
“Do you have any idea what she’s up to?”
“A little. But thanks for the information. Now I can prepare accordingly.”
“Don’t mention it. Your success is my success, after all.”
Diego handed her a neatly cut muffin slice.
“Make sure you win.”
Ebony took the muffin, not knowing when he had sliced it and nodded.
Back at the Dominique estate, Ebony pulled out a letter.
The recipient was Leonhardt Dominique.
“Dear Leon,
How have you been? I’ve been so busy lately that I haven’t been able to visit or write to you as often. I’m sorry.
I have a favor to ask. I need a knight to accompany me on a trip. Would you be able to introduce me to someone?
Also, could you tell our family that I’m staying with you while I’m away?
I’ll explain more later.
Wishing you a peaceful day,
Ebony Dominique”
Since Irene had started making moves in the underworld, Ebony knew it was time to start her operation.
However, going there alone would be reckless.
Bringing a Dominique knight would mean that word would reach Edward sooner or later.
She needed someone discreet, a knight who had no ties to the Dominique family and would keep his mouth shut.
She hoped Leon, who was usually overprotective, would trust her just this once.
A few days later, she received a reply from Leon.
“To my mischievous little sister,
I was happy to get your letter, but the content made me sad.
It feels like you’re keeping more secrets from the family, and I want to refuse. But as a caring older brother, I suppose denying my beloved sister’s request would be a crime, right?
I hope you’re not getting into anything dangerous.
I’ll cover for you with the family. I’ll also send you a skilled knight.
Take care,
Leonhardt Dominique”
Leon seemed suspicious but, as always, he gave in.
At the end of the letter, he asked for the date and time she needed the knight and how many she required.
After thanking him and responding, she received a final reply: the knight would be waiting in the stables on the appointed day.
On the morning of the mission, Ebony sneaked out while everyone was asleep, wearing a hooded robe as she arrived at the stables.
She hesitated, worried that the stable master might see her—until she noticed something odd.
The stable master was lying on the ground, unconscious.
He didn’t seem to be asleep. It looked like someone had knocked him out.
“You must be Lady Dominique.”
A voice came from nearby, and Ebony turned to see a knight stepping out of the shadows.
She had moved as quietly as possible, but he had still noticed her.
“Oh, I made sure no one would notice our departure, so I took care of things in advance,” the knight said casually, pointing at the unconscious stable master.
Ebony blinked.
That was not ethical.
But the knight seemed completely unbothered, even giving her a thumbs-up.
Deciding to let it slide for now, she quickly introduced herself.
“I’m Ebony Dominique. Thank you for coming at this late hour.”
“I’m Cain Reaper. Call me Sir Reaper!”
Cain grinned and kissed her hand.
“You’re very enthusiastic. I look forward to working with you, Sir Reaper.”
“Of course! I am here under Sir Leonhardt’s orders. I swear on my life that I will protect you, Lady Dominique!”
His voice boomed as he led her into the stables.
They needed to pick a horse for the journey, so Cain carefully inspected the options before pointing at a strong black stallion.
“This one will do.”
“Uh… that’s…”
Ebony hesitated.
The horse he had chosen belonged to Edward, the head of the Dominique family.
She immediately moved to stop Cain.
“That horse belongs to Duke Dominique.”
“And? We’re sneaking out anyway. The Duke won’t know it was us. You can just smooth things over later.”
“Well, that’s…”
“Besides, everyone knows the Duke adores his daughter! If you ask for forgiveness, he’ll let it slide!”
Ebony sighed.
She had only known this knight for a few minutes, but she already had a feeling.
He was not an ordinary knight.
