chapter 1139
1. Fast Forward to Industrialization
With Philo, or rather, the chaos goblin Saffiroth, successfully swearing fealty to me, and me withstanding the “chaos” emanating from her, which even she couldn’t control, that… the “chaos” continually eroding the script, it can be said the “source” has truly been severed. If managed properly from here on out, it definitely won’t reappear.
So, besides fending off the ever-growing number of goblins around me, practically enough to field a football team, it seems I’ve got nothing else to do? Not quite…
There’s a touch of wanting to “withdraw,” but more so for a “legitimate purpose.” Currently, I’m in the elven kingdom of Adelheid, the Kingdom of Prus, seeking some minor assistance from its leader, Adelheid, for some trivial matters.
I consider myself to be “visiting,” but… Adelheid seems to think otherwise.
Right now, within the capital of the Kingdom of Prus.
Adelheid is clinging to my arm, proudly showcasing all the latest “inventions” of the Prus elves. Surely these “military secrets” aren’t something I should be seeing so casually? But Adelheid hasn’t said anything, and I don’t particularly want to ask, lest the atmosphere become even more awkward.
“Hehe, if it’s ‘searching’ you’re after, then you’ve come to the right place!”
Adelheid pointed to a spot in the distance, where large, “mechanical” machines were arrayed. No matter how I looked at them, I could only arrive at one conclusion – computers, and colossal ones at that. Several elven “researchers” were busily working there, the “clack clack” sounds reaching my ears, sounding unmistakably like keyboards. Some even had a different “texture” to their sound.
Good heavens, they’ve not only created keyboards, but they’ve even developed Blue and Red switches?
“Euclid, do you know what these are?”
Of course, I know.
But the high-EQ response in this situation is to play dumb.
“These are the latest devices developed by our Kingdom of Prus in cooperation with Icarus’s abilities! Now, not only do we not need every elf to use magic for reconnaissance, but even ordinary people without any magic can operate them! For our Kingdom of Prus, it’s a revolutionary ‘new invention’!”
Adelheid’s voice sounded so joyous, and I have no doubt that, given the elves a bit more time, they could fast forward straight into the Industrial Revolution and modernization.
“So~ if you simply want me to monitor which regions have had strange happenings, no problem at all~ I can even test the performance of the new devices at the same time~”
With that, Adelheid winked at me. The elves working nearby quickly shot us eye rolls, but could only swallow the lemon-flavored dog food. As for the “monitoring” Adelheid mentioned, that was one of the reasons I came to the Kingdom of Prus.
Although the main body of the “chaos” has turned into my goblin, naturally, there won’t be any further spread. However, since even Philo herself couldn’t control this “chaos,” no one can be certain if the seeds of “chaos” won’t appear in other kingdoms.
In order to “completely” nip this dangerous thing in the bud, after Philo’s matter had calmed down, I decided to come to the Kingdom of Prus and have these elves, who best understand “investigation and intelligence,” help me monitor whether “chaos” would occur again. This isn’t just for me; it’s also like giving the elves themselves a preventative shot, so I don’t feel embarrassed about it.
What of Adephie’s reaction, you ask?
Well, isn’t it obvious? She dragged me on a tour of her “base,” probably to “show off” a bit to her subordinates, and that was payment enough for her services.
“Surveillance? You’ve come to the right person! The Kingdom of Prussia’s technology is the best in the world! Not like those Brits, honestly. Hmph~ What is this, some bygone era where they still rely on manpower for intelligence? Utterly backward and barbaric!”
Calm down, Adephie, calm down. You’re practically declaring war on the Queen with that talk.
“Anyway, Icarus will keep an eye on things for you. It’s hardly a difficult task anyway.”
With a wave of her hand, dismissing her underlings back to their work, Adephie turned and led me away from this… alarmingly “modern” place.
And then…
“So, you have nothing to worry about now, right?”
The stiff, frigid air from before vanished with the change of scenery, and before I knew it, Adephie’s expression softened considerably.
In a swift motion, the elf removed her hat – a gesture that seemed to emphasize: that she, at least on the surface, was no different from any other elven loli.
As for the military uniform she just couldn’t seem to shake…
Ah, well… wear it if you like. I’m not complaining. My sense of elven aesthetics has long been warped by Prussia’s band of “modernized elves.” What was it, elves clad in leaves, skipping through the forest with bows and arrows, firing at random? A myth!
With the other elves out of earshot, Adephie’s demeanor relaxed.
“You came alone?”
“That’s right.”
“No one followed?”
Her brow furrowed. “I assumed you’d have at least two bothersome women trailing you.”
You misunderstand me, Adephie.
Since I’ve come to “ask for help,” I certainly wouldn’t do anything to upset you. Besides…
“If I’d brought Keefeil and the others, you wouldn’t have taken me on a tour of that… uh, base, would you? And besides, the ‘chaos’ I told you about has mostly dissipated. There’s no immediate danger, so of course, I’m traveling solo.”
Keefeil really didn’t come this time. Strictly speaking, Phiro and Order, the two fairies, are with me in their true forms, but they wouldn’t dream of interfering with my time with Adephie.
So, naturally, my words were taken by Adephie as some kind of… signal.
She immediately covered her ears.
“Mel, change of plans. Execute Plan B.”
Just to welcome me? Is that really necessary, Adephie?
Catching my awkward gaze, Adephie seemed almost displeased. She rolled her eyes, puffed out her cheeks, and retorted, “What? Am I not allowed to make a few ‘arrangements’?”
“Some faithless men truly share the elven nature, taking months – entire *moons* – to reply to messages, to inquire about the well-being of others?”
I’m not, I didn’t…
That “faithless man” you’re talking about…
You’re talking about *me*, aren’t you?
The moment I arrived in the Kingdom of Prus, a touch of unease settled upon me.
—
A new chapter begins. I hope for much encouragement, and perhaps a moon ticket or two!
Next month, I’m planning some New Year’s gifts for a raffle. Stay tuned! Of course, there will be direct acquisition methods as well, but the specifics will have to wait for next month’s event. I’m still working things out; I’ve made a few things, but preparations are ongoing.
Some illustrations and character art should also be arriving next month. With the New Year approaching, things are a little…delayed. Progress is a tad slow.
