Chapter 5
The next day, while attending classes at school, Kirishima kept glancing at the Rolex on his wrist. He couldn’t help but wonder—just how powerful was this so-called “lucky watch”?
He casually opened his wallet and saw that he had a single 10,000-yen bill inside.
Then, an idea struck him.
“Alright, time to gamble.”
His destination: a pachinko parlor.
Back in his first year of university, a student he met at the entrance ceremony had dragged him into the world of pachinko. He ended up going there more times than he’d like to admit, though he had few good memories of it. He didn’t mind the smell of tobacco since he himself had picked up smoking as part of his “college debut,” but the way money vanished like scraps of paper, rarely ever returning, had left a bitter taste.
But if he thought of it as just using yesterday’s dinner money, it wasn’t such a big deal. After finishing his morning classes, he headed to the pachinko parlor.
The moment he stepped inside, he was reminded of how loud it was. Ignoring the noise, he walked through the rows of machines, looking for the right one to play.
Though he could also play slot machines, it had been a long time since his last visit, and he wasn’t familiar with the newer models. Not wanting to overcomplicate things, he decided to go for a traditional pachinko machine—just load the balls and shoot.
Eventually, he settled on a machine that felt right.
“Might as well give it a shot,” he thought, inserting his precious 10,000-yen bill.
He started playing.
And within minutes—jackpot.
“Oh? Not bad.”
Feeling optimistic, he continued playing.
Jackpot.
Jackpot.
Jackpot.
Jackpot.
The winning streak showed no signs of stopping.
By this point, he had only spent 500 yen of his initial 10,000.
He was still skeptical.
“Could it really be the Rolex? Nah, no way. Just a coincidence, right?
…Well, if I’m winning this much, I might as well go all the way before they kick me out of here!”
And so, he played until the parlor closed.
Throughout the day, employees had repeatedly checked his machine, suspecting foul play. But after inspecting it thoroughly, they found nothing unusual. With no grounds to stop him, they could only stand by as the balls continued pouring out.
Onlookers gathered, drawn by the sheer spectacle of his endless winnings. The usually half-empty parlor had become unexpectedly lively. Perhaps that was another reason the staff chose not to intervene.
By the time the place shut down for the night, Kirishima had accumulated approximately 250,000 balls.
When he finally cashed out, he walked away with nearly 900,000 yen.
“This is insane… Is it the watch? Or am I just insanely lucky?”
Having suddenly come into a small fortune, he felt oddly afraid to spend it. In the end, he deposited 800,000 yen into his savings and kept 100,000 yen on hand. With some of it, he treated himself to a slightly extravagant dinner.
That night, lying in bed, he thought:
“I want to do something bigger with this money.”
The next day, his university classes ended early in the afternoon.
Wanting more free time, Kirishima called his part-time job and adjusted his work schedule.
He was working as a tutor, a job he initially took because of its flexible hours. However, with four shifts a week, he realized it was too much of a commitment for what he wanted to do now.
When he vaguely explained to his supervisor that he wanted to “try something new (and potentially profitable),” his boss, thankfully, was understanding. At least for this week, his evenings were now free.
With his newfound free time, he first reactivated his dormant online securities account.
Back when he started his part-time job, he had also opened a stock trading account on a whim. Now that he had it, he figured he might as well use it.
The hardest part was learning the rules and mechanics of trading, but after some effort, he reached a level where he could at least buy and sell stocks.
“Alright. Now the real game begins.”
With that thought, he transferred 800,000 yen into his trading account, ready to make his move.
Knowing absolutely nothing about stocks, he relied purely on instinct.
He invested the entire amount into a single emerging internet company.
There were other promising companies he had considered, but something told him to go all in on this one.
Afterward, he briefly wondered if it would have been smarter to diversify, but he dismissed the thought.
“My gut told me to do it, so I did. No regrets.”
With his investment in place, he decided to head to Umeda for some shopping.
“Might as well splurge a little with this lucky money.”
Grabbing what was left from his dinner budget, he set out.
Although he had just won a considerable sum, at his core, Kirishima was still a cautious person. He wasn’t used to spending large amounts of money.
So, he decided to start small—by buying some clothes for the upcoming season.
Just a little indulgence to make himself feel good.
And with that, his journey into a new life of luck and fortune began.
