Chapter 5: Confession of Sin

Chapter 5: Confession of Sin

By the time I had finished reading most of the books in my father’s library, I was summoned by both my father and mother.

Guided by Jurgen, I entered my father’s study. The serious expressions on their faces made it clear that this was going to be an important conversation.

“Vanitas… please tell us about that day again.”

My father asked for a continuation of the events from that day. My mother nodded silently, indicating her agreement.

Once again, I explained that I am not Vanitas Lindblum, but someone who was reincarnated and took over this world’s Vanitas. I also mentioned how I have only a faint recollection of my previous life’s memories, and that Vanitas’ personality no longer existed within me.

And then, I revealed that this world is the world from the novel, and Vanitas Lindblum is destined to become a wicked nobleman who enslaves countless slaves, leading to his demise while opposing a certain individual.

I told them everything I knew.

Even if the previous Vanitas was an irredeemable villain, I couldn’t bring myself to hide the truth after taking away his life. No matter what, I didn’t want to keep the truth hidden.

“I see…,” my father said, a mixture of emotions in his expression, a sense of resignation and acceptance.

“You are not Vanny…” my mother said, directly denying it, and I felt an inexplicable sadness. Even if this were considered Vanitas’ emotions, it wasn’t something that could be easily determined.

I believe both of them accepted my story. It must have been hard to believe.

Casually, I asked my father about the reason, and what he said in response was…

“As a matter of fact, Vanny… had died once. According to Dr. Dominic’s diagnosis, there was definitely a few minutes when his heartbeat stopped.”

…So, I had been reincarnated as Vanitas who died from a high fever. I didn’t have the memories of that fever-induced state, but judging by my parents’ reactions, they seemed to think that Vanitas died at some point.

“At that moment, I gave up. No, it was probably just a self-defense mechanism. When Vanny’s heartbeat weakened, and he weakly murmured our names… I thought that maybe this was for the best. If he was going to continue harming others and being hated, if he was going to become an unstoppable monster… then maybe it was better this way…”

“Father…”

It was a confession of guilt.

A painful confession that came from being pushed to the brink.

“El, it’s not just you. I… I also wished that if Vanny couldn’t return to the way he used to be, maybe it would be better if it all ended here. To wish for the death of my own son, the son I carried in my womb… it’s not just a failure as a parent, but as a human being.”

It was a heart-wrenching revelation.

I’m sorry for my oversight. I didn’t mean to trivialize Vanitas’ parents, especially since they didn’t appear in the novel, and I couldn’t imagine what they were going through.

To wish for the death of their beloved son… it’s indeed a grave sin for someone to become a wicked noble.

They were supposed to be kind-hearted people, but to change this much due to the circumstances is truly heartbreaking.

My father continued his confession, revealing the incident that led to Vanitas’ change in behavior—a setting that I, who wasn’t mentioned in the novel, wasn’t aware of.

“Vanitas changed. Yes, he used to be a really kind child before that accident happened.”

It seems there was an incident that caused a significant shift in Vanitas’ personality, but the details were yet to be disclosed.
