Chapter 3: 3. Would You Like To Be A Hero
3. Would You Like To Be A Hero
Rafe had expected Guardian's question to be about the small diary he stored all the information he had on him but instead he asked something even more unexpected. Rafe opened his mouth to speak but realised he had nothing to say, it was a question he himself had no answer to.
Guardian continued in his prolonged silence. "You knew it was inevitable yet you tried to save her, why?"
It was true, Rafe was not the hero type yet he jumped into such a life threatening situation without a second's thought. Maybe all those comics were getting to him.
"I wanted to get her out of there before something bad happened." He wanted to say but if he was truly honest with himself.
"I wanted to save her!"
A long silence followed after he had spoken those words, a cool wind blew and whistled. The number one hero Guardian just looked at Rafe and for the first time their eyes locked.
"I could not stand to see her cry..." Rafe spoke from his heart, seeing a child hurt was one thing he was against.
"I know I'm just a kid who got caught up in something dangerous, I mean you're the Guardian. Anyone would have done the same right?" Rafe looked at his hands trembling before him, he had grown up with people rarely taking his opinions into consideration. It was the first time someone aside from his mother asked him how he truly felt.
"Would they really? Do you think anyone else would have run up to save the girl?" Guardian boomed. "Do you know where my pride comes from? It's from the people, their smiles and laughs. Their comfort and joy, their experiences, family. That's what I try to symbolise as a hero."
"It's about shouldering the hopes and dreams of the people with a smile on your face." Guardians face shone with radiance as he smiled. "There is no greater feeling."
Rafe for a moment thought he should have written that in his diary. He raised his hand and felt his chest, when the girl's mother had thanked him his heart had felt a tingling sensation and he loved that feeling but he could not tell if it was the same with what Guardian said. He yearned to feel it again.
"Today a mother and daughter could laugh because of you." Guardian said as he looked down at him.
Standing before the strongest hero in the world, the realisation hit him.
"I-- I saved them..."
Guardian stretched his hand out to him.
"Boy, be a hero!"
An opportunity he never hoped to have in his life presented itself to him.
"But... I'm... I don't have powers. I'm just a highschool kid." He stammered.
Guardian chuckled. "What nonsense, you don't need powers to be a hero just a good heart."
Rafe raised an eyebrow at his favourite hero and said. "But there are big villains out there and I am no good."
"Not the way I see it." Guardians face became more serious as he spoke. "If you can accept to be a symbol of hope and peace to all of humanity I will give you my power."
Rafe but his power lip and paused for a bit. His brain warkes out the details in a rush, he thought if it could be real in anyway. He had never heard of anything such as a superhuman being able to share their power before.
But then again he could not let a chance such as this slip up.
Rafe looked at the huge hand before him. To think he had given up being a hero, he had always fantasized on being a hero and meeting guardian— his hero.
"Is it really possible?" He asked.
Guardian nodded. "Whats your name."
"Rafe Antonelli." He said with a bit more confidence.
Guardian smiled beamed even more. "Boy I am giving you the chance to be a hero, will you accept."
Rafe but his lower lip for a moment, this was it. The only chance fate would ever give him and he would only be a fool to refuse.
"I'm sorry Mr Guardian but I will have to decline your offer."
