Chapter 5: Chapter 5: Your Luck Is Really Good
After a brief pause, Asuna resumed explaining to Nangong Xiao.
"Oh right, Nangong-kun, the data system categorizes items by different quality levels, marked by distinct colors.
From lowest to highest, they are: white, blue, bright gold, dark gold, purple, red, and green for special sets. Of course, this ranking doesn't strictly represent an item's strength or usefulness. For example, some powerful bright gold equipment can outperform lower-tier dark gold gear. Occasionally, this applies to other item qualities as well.
In other words, the color-based quality grading often reflects the rarity of the item rather than its actual effectiveness."
"I see."
Asuna's explanation reminded Nangong Xiao of games from a certain "movie" company, like the Diablo X Evil God series and World of Magic X, which featured similar item quality systems.
As for the value of the Poring Card, Nangong Xiao didn't have a clear concept yet, but he understood that these cards, which could be embedded into slotted equipment, were considered valuable items.
Stashing the Poring Card into his system backpack, Nangong Xiao picked up his sword and headed toward another lone monster, a Poring, in the distance.
At the same time, he asked Asuna,
"Asuna, could you tell me some basic information about this otherworld?"
Keeping pace with Nangong Xiao, Asuna organized her thoughts before replying,
"How should I put it… Hmm, Nangong-kun, have you ever read Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings?"
Nangong Xiao nodded.
"You mean the general setting of this world is similar to traditional Western fantasy, like The Lord of the Rings?"
Asuna said,
"That's a fair comparison. At the very least, this world is also home to a variety of fantastical races. For example, orcs occupying the northern deserts, human nations spread across the central continent, the Elven Empire and Dragonkin Empire in the eastern forests, dwarves and goblins in the western hills, beastfolk in the southern jungles, dragons overseas, and shadow races dwelling in dungeons.
It's quite complex—a world rich in races, much like The Lord of the Rings.
"Oh, and the orcs here are different from those in The Lord of the Rings. They're not as savage or ugly. In fact, some female orcs are very beautiful. From what I know, aside from beast-like ears and tails, female orcs look almost identical to regular humans. I bet you'd like them when you meet one."
"Is that so?" Nangong Xiao replied indifferently, then asked,
"So, which race's territory are we in right now?"
His indifferent reaction surprised Asuna.
She knew some male Suitors were obsessed with beast-eared girls—a behavior she found both disgraceful and repulsive, though she acknowledged it as part of human nature.
But this newcomer seemed different—not as perverted as the others, at least for now.
That was good enough for her. She had no desire to spend much time with someone harboring filthy thoughts.
Shaking off her stray thoughts, Asuna replied,
"We're currently in the Kingdom of Stantell, one of the six major human kingdoms. More precisely, we're in the Polie Plains, under the jurisdiction of the Romande Province in the northern part of Stantell."
"Human territory, huh… Not bad."
Nangong Xiao paused briefly before asking again,
"What's the internal situation of the Stantell Kingdom like? How's the livelihood of its people? What about the military's strength? And its reputation among other nations?"
"Uh…"
Asuna was momentarily at a loss, unsure where to begin with so many questions at once.
Noticing her hesitation, Nangong Xiao realized he might've overwhelmed her. He quickly added,
"How about this—are things in Stantell currently peaceful, plagued by internal strife, or even at war?"
"Ah… It's relatively peaceful for now. I'm not sure about internal issues, but there are external threats. Not long ago, the neighboring Province of Pruel had a large-scale conflict with the orcs.
I heard from the Mercenary Guild that there's a significant chance it could escalate into a localized war—or even a full-scale one."
"Interesting."
By now, Nangong Xiao had reached the lone Poring. With swift, efficient sword strikes, he dispatched the monster without much effort.
"Phew… This kind of physical work isn't exactly enjoyable… Hm? Another card drop?
Looks like the drop rate for these things isn't that low after all."
As he spoke, Nangong Xiao opened the data for the newly obtained card.
---
Mature Poring Card
White Quality
+3 Constitution
Note: Can be embedded into slotted equipment.
---
After glancing at the card's data and storing it in his system backpack, Asuna finally snapped out of her daze. She stared at him incredulously.
"Your luck is insane… A +3 Poring Card?!"
"I've always had good luck," Nangong Xiao replied casually, setting off again—this time targeting two Mature Porings traveling together.
Having effortlessly slain Porings twice already, Nangong Xiao felt confident.
As long as he stayed cautious, handling two or even three of these monsters at once wouldn't be difficult—even though he wasn't particularly athletic.
"Asuna, let's keep going.
By the way, how does the power system work in this world?"
Nangong Xiao multitasked, fending off attacks from the two Mature Porings while conversing with Asuna, who watched nearby.
Seeing how he had gone from struggling initially to handling combat with ease, Asuna couldn't help but admire him inwardly.
This rookie has great potential.
Setting her admiration aside, Asuna replied,
"As for the power system, well… so far, it seems similar to typical Western fantasy settings—there's magic, there's battle aura, and they both seem pretty powerful."
"'Seem'?" Nangong Xiao questioned while parrying a Poring's attack.
"Is there a problem?"
"No, not really."
In the end, Nangong Xiao decided not to dwell on why this seemingly kind and dependable senior would give such an ambiguous answer. Instead, he pressed on,
"How strong are the mages and warriors in this world? What about your level—does it stand out among the cultivators here?"
"Oh, that. I've been tested at the Mercenary Guild before. According to them, my strength is equivalent to a Tier-2 Warrior, with the title of Apprentice Sword Duelist."
While speaking, Asuna noticed that Nangong Xiao, having mastered the battle rhythm, was deliberately prolonging the fight against the two Porings—not aiming to kill them quickly but using them to hone his combat skills.
Truly impressive… in more ways than one.
With that thought lingering, Asuna rested her hand on her sword hilt, staying ready to assist while continuing her explanations…
