Chapter 4: Chapter 4: Another Mutation
Zhang Xiaoqiang wiped the tears off his face and stood up to gather the scattered supplies around.
Outside the convenience store, the heavy rain was still pouring down, and all that could be heard in the whole world was the pattering sound of the rain.
He didn't think about anything in his mind, just mechanically collected all kinds of supplies one by one and moved them together.
The rain kept dripping down along the hem of his clothes onto the ground. The inner clothes were completely soaked through, and the icy coldness made him shiver all over.
His growling stomach reminded Zhang Xiaoqiang that it was time to eat something. He dug out a box of wafer biscuits, tore open the package, and a cockroach fell out of the box and scurried around on the ground. Subconsciously, he lifted his foot to step on it.
But in the end, instead of crushing it to death, Zhang Xiaoqiang trapped it in an empty mineral water bottle. After screwing on the cap tightly, he left two air holes on it. The cockroach lay quietly at the bottom of the bottle, motionless.
He didn't give it any food. He just wanted to know how long it could survive without food.
In this desolate doomsday that made people feel hopeless, Zhang Xiaoqiang was like a castaway living on a lonely island, with no hope and no future.
Apart from the zombies wandering around on the street, only this cockroach accompanied him. Loneliness, like a wild beast, kept gnawing at his heart. It was like a poison, constantly corroding his soul.
To be honest, sometimes Zhang Xiaoqiang wondered if he was the only human left on the earth now. And he, was the king of the whole world, a king of just one person.
However, behind this un-crowned glory was a despair that felt like falling into an abyss.
"If you can't bear loneliness, then learn to enjoy it."
For some reason, Zhang Xiaoqiang thought of this famous saying. While munching on the wafer biscuits, he calculated how long the current supplies could last. He even thought about escaping from the city while it was raining. Unfortunately, he didn't know how to drive, let alone steal a car.
"Get out of here?"
Zhang Xiaoqiang shook his head and dismissed this crazy idea.
He didn't know how many more days the rain would last, didn't know if all the zombies liked getting wet in the rain, didn't know where he could go. In his whole life, he had only been to Wushi City and City X where his sister got married.
"What a bleak future! Alas!" Zhang Xiaoqiang sighed.
After unconsciously finishing a box of wafer biscuits, he took out a fertilizer bag and stuffed whatever he could grab into it. When he had put in a few packs of cigarettes, it was almost full. Then he brought two cases of mineral water, tied them up with a woven belt, put them on his shoulder with an iron spear, and walked home.
After walking out of the convenience store, the rain was pouring down like a waterfall. The galvanized water pipe rubbed against his shoulder, and the burning pain kept eroding his nerves. Biting his teeth, he walked home step by step. Perhaps the rain was too icy and piercing, or perhaps it was his body acting up. His body, which had just perked up a bit, became vulnerable in this torrential rain. His consciousness became very blurred, and he could hardly see the road clearly. The heavy rain was still falling. Although it was supposed to be the spring rain in February, it carried a chilly coldness and poured in through the collar of his clothes, constantly taking away the heat from his body.
As soon as he stepped one foot into the door and before he could pull the other one back, he couldn't hold on any longer. With the supplies on the iron spear, he fell forward onto the ground.
Zhang Xiaoqiang lay on the ground, gasping for breath desperately. He struggled to turn over and lie flat on the concrete floor, looking at the staircase slanting upward and the ceiling, panting continuously. The rain kept dripping down along the hem of his clothes onto the floor tiles. When the rain soaked his body, a burning sensation, like countless small needles pricking his skin, made it feel hot and painful, yet it still couldn't drive away the bone-chilling cold.
Zhang Xiaoqiang curled up his body and kept shivering. The burning hunger in his stomach was even stimulating his taste buds, making him have an unprecedented urge to eat!
Immediately, he poured out the supplies in the bag. Various kinds of food, cigarettes, and mineral water were scattered all over the floor. He knelt on the ground, picked up a piece of chocolate, tore open the package, stuffed it into his mouth, swallowed it almost without chewing, and then dropped the packaging on the floor. At this moment, he was completely controlled by hunger. His only thought was to swallow the food in front of him into his mouth.
In just a short while, the floor was covered with all kinds of torn packaging and empty metal cans.
The food gradually decreased until it was all gone, but the feeling of hunger became even stronger. In the end, Zhang Xiaoqiang directly opened the bag of rice, took out the raw rice and fed it into his mouth, crunching it. The dry broken rice scraped his throat as he swallowed it, making him roll his eyes from choking. But he didn't even have time to take a sip of water. He just wanted to eat, eat, and eat some more, and then continued to put more into his mouth.
When the bag of nearly ten-plus kilograms of rice was almost empty, he still wasn't satisfied. He cracked open raw eggs and chewed the egg white, yolk and eggshell together and swallowed them. Whether it was vegetable leaves or stalks, he tore them apart and swallowed them. He was like a locust driven mad by hunger, crazily eating everything edible that he could see.
When he couldn't find any more food at all, he slowly regained his sanity and looked at the messy kitchen floor.
"Did I do this?"
Zhang Xiaoqiang was stunned. Everything that had just happened to him was like a dream, and he couldn't remember anything after waking up.
Enough food that could have lasted for one or two months was wiped out by him in such a short time. He couldn't remember what it tasted like or what the texture was like at all.
After eating so much food, his stomach didn't even bulge a bit. He didn't even feel full!
"Could it be that after being drenched by the rain, my digestive function has mutated?"
Zhang Xiaoqiang was puzzled and couldn't figure it out.
But if he couldn't understand it, he didn't bother to think about it anymore. That was his biggest advantage. He never got obsessed with something he couldn't understand.
A slight itch on his ankle reminded Zhang Xiaoqiang that five days ago, he had been scratched by a zombie's sharp nails, leaving a wound half an inch deep and ten centimeters long. But now, the two sides of the wound had closed tightly together, forming dark brown scars. It seemed that as long as he gently peeled it off, the black-brown scab would fall off naturally, and there would be no trace of the injury left.
"Have I become a superman?" Zhang Xiaoqiang was amazed at his healing ability. Could it be that after being infected by the rain, his self-healing speed could be enhanced dozens of times?
"Isn't that the so-called immortal body?" He was lost in wild thoughts.
If that was really the case, at least he wouldn't have to be afraid of getting hurt in the future. But when he thought that this was the price he had paid by eating up the rations that could have lasted him for two months, he felt a dull pain in his chest.
"I can't get hurt casually in the future. Otherwise, if there's no food left, I'll have to gnaw on zombies..."
