Chapter 1353: A Stone Coffin
Unable to defeat Regigigas quickly and unwilling to let it continue destroying the Guli Mountains, Yuga could think of only one solution.
He called all his Pokémon to his side, explained his plan to them, and then retrieved a box from his system space. Inside were miraculous healing items: Max Revive.
Yuga distributed Max Revive to everyone and instructing them to hold one in their mouths. He then looked at Absol and Gengar and asked, "Are you two ready?"
"Absol!"
"Gengar!"
Absol and Gengar nodded simultaneously. Absol leaped forward at incredible speed toward Regigigas, while Gengar disappeared in a flash, reappearing above Regigigas' head in the blink of an eye.
"Absol~"
"Gengar~"
Following Yuga's command, strange musical notes emerged simultaneously from the throats of the two Pokémon, resembling an eerie, indescribable melody.
Although Absol and Gengar's voices were entirely different and not particularly pleasant, they somehow merged in a mysterious harmony. Each note resonated in the air, creating an uncanny vibration.
As the duet continued, a dark ribbon of mist abruptly appeared above Yuga and his Pokémon, weaving an unsettlingly eerie sight.
Regigigas was no exception; a massive black ribbon hung over its head, forming a shroud-like curtain.
Unfazed by the anomaly above, Regigigas continued its relentless destruction of the forest. It was also apparent that the Marshadow it had been holding had disappeared at some point, though its whereabouts remained unknown. Regigigas' massive hand remained clenched tightly, but Marshadow's diminutive size made it difficult to notice this detail. Yuga, focused entirely on Gengar and Absol, had overlooked the situation entirely.
After several seconds, the melody abruptly stopped, and the dark ribbons above Yuga and his Pokémon instantly plunged into their bodies.
A chorus of agonized cries followed as Yuga's Pokémon collapsed one by one, promptly swallowing the Max Revive they held.
The moment the black ribbons entered their bodies, Yuga felt a wave of excruciating pain ripple through him, causing him to fall off Dragonite's back. Dragonite also let out a pained cry but managed to endure the agony long enough to catch Yuga in its arms.
However, the sharp pain subsided as quickly as it came. As the medicinal effects of the Max Revive flowed through Yuga's body, the pain dissipated instantly, leaving him feeling as if he were immersed in warm water—a sensation of pure comfort.
"Regigigas~ Regigigas~"
The rampaging Regigigas suddenly froze mid-action. A moment later, its massive body collapsed to the ground with a deafening crash, shaking the earth violently.
The move Absol and Gengar had combined to use was Perish Song, a skill that forces mutual destruction. Any life form marked by the melody of Perish Song falls into a near-death state the instant the song ceases.
This near-death condition is so severe that even restorative moves like Heal Pulse cannot reverse it, which is why Yuga rarely allowed Absol and Gengar to use it.
Fortunately, the destruction caused by Regigigas had already scared off all the wild Pokémon in the area. Otherwise, they too would have been dragged down by the Perish Song and rendered incapacitated.
Yet, because of the use of Perish Song, Yuga had to expend over ten Max Revive, which made his heart ache deeply.
Although he wasn't exactly short on Max Revive, they weren't unlimited. These items were life-saving items in critical moments, and now he'd nearly exhausted his supply.
Seeing Regigigas finally fall, Yuga let out a genuine sigh of relief. If the rampage had continued, the Guli Mountains would have been completely destroyed.
Yuga recalled his other Pokémon, climbed aboard Dragonite, and flew above Regigigas before landing on its enormous body. By now, Regigigas was on the brink of death, its aura reduced to almost nothing. If not for the faint rise and fall of its chest, Yuga would have thought it was already dead.
But Yuga couldn't let it die. He took out a Max Revive, intending to feed it to Regigigas. However, he only had three Max Revive left, and the thought made his heart ache even more.
Holding the Max Revive in his hand, Yuga suddenly realized he had no idea how to feed it to Regigigas.
Where was this thing's mouth?
After searching for a while to no avail, Celebi eventually took the Max Revive from Yuga and managed to feed it to Regigigas.
To Yuga's surprise, one Max Revive wasn't enough to revive Regigigas. He ended up using his remaining two Max Revive, and only then did Regigigas finally recover.
With no seeds left in his inventory, Yuga was devastated, feeling like he had taken a massive loss.
"Regigigas~ Regigigas~"
Regigigas slowly regained consciousness, its mind a blank slate. When it noticed it was lying in the mountains, it had no idea what had happened.
"Regigigas!!!"
Yuga shouted loudly, catching Regigigas' attention. It finally noticed Yuga standing on its body alongside Celebi. At the same time, Yuga breathed a sigh of relief—it seemed like Regigigas had regained clarity. At least his dozen Max Revive hadn't been wasted.
"Regigigas~"
The six glowing energy points on Regigigas' body flickered twice as it turned to Celebi with a confused expression, inquiring about what had happened.
"Celebi~ Celebi~"
Celebi flew over to Regigigas and, with some effort, recounted the entire sequence of events. Only then did Regigigas come to understand that its space had been destroyed, along with its temple.
"Regigigas~"
Human, thank you!
Regigigas expressed its gratitude to Yuga, recognizing that he was the one who had helped it.
"It was the right thing to do; no need to thank me!" Yuga replied with a cheerful smile. In truth, what he really wanted to say was, If you could, please compensate me for the loss of those dozen or so Max Revive.
"Oh, right, where's Marshadow?" Yuga suddenly remembered Marshadow.
"Celebi~ Celebi~!"
Hearing this, Celebi also cried out angrily and began to search around for any sign of Marshadow. After all, it was because of Marshadow that large swaths of the forest had been destroyed. Celebi's heartbreak over this was no less than Yuga's pain at losing so many Max Revive.
But by now, Marshadow was nowhere to be found. It had long since fled to who knows where.
After searching fruitlessly for a while, Yuga turned back to Regigigas and said, "Regigigas, could I ask for your help with something?"
"Regigigas~"
Please, go ahead.
Regigigas, with its gentle disposition, spoke to Yuga in a very polite tone.
"Because of Marshadow, the Guli Mountains are currently being invaded by wild Pokémon from the wilderness. Could you help drive them back to where they came from?"
Yuga made his request, as the battles between the Pioneer Corps and the Guli Mountain overlords were still ongoing.
"Regigigas~ Regigigas~"
Leave it to me.
Without hesitation, Regigigas agreed. It rose from the ground and let out a deafening roar toward the sky. The sound was so loud that Yuga couldn't help but cover his ears.
The roar echoed across the entire Guli Mountain range. The wild Pokémon, who had been engaged in battles, all instinctively stopped and turned toward the direction of Regigigas' voice.
"Regigigas~"
Another roar followed. This time, the wild Pokémon understood Regigigas' message and began retreating from the Guli Mountains back to the wilderness.
Mr. Kaya, who had been fighting a Champion level Breloom, watched in astonishment as the Breloom, upon hearing Regigigas' voice, immediately turned around and ran toward the border between the Guli Mountains and the wilderness.
Soon, the other Pokémon battling the soldiers also began retreating one after another. With the enemy gone, many of the soldiers simply collapsed on the ground, exhausted. They had been fighting endlessly, wave after wave of invading Pokémon, with no end in sight.
"Finally, it's over!"
Mr. Kaya let out a long sigh of relief and looked in the direction of Regigigas' roar. He was certain that Yuga had successfully thwarted Marshadow's scheme.
"Brother, it's finally done!"
On another battlefield, Kazuma, who had just finished a grueling fight, collapsed onto the ground. With a face full of relief, he spoke to Shin, who was sprawled beside him. The two brothers were in a sorry state—their military uniforms were tattered and stained with blood.
They had just taken on an Elite level Exploud, whose strength was formidable. If not for their seamless teamwork, they would have been defeated long ago.
When Regigigas' roar echoed, the Exploud had just knocked out Kazuma's Gliscor and was moments away from delivering a punch to Kazuma himself.
"Captain, Vice-Captain, are you alright?"
At that moment, other members of their team rushed over with worried expressions. It was thanks to the captain and vice-captain holding off the Elite level Exploud that the rest of the team had survived unscathed.
"Don't worry, we're fine!" Kazuma said with a grin.
At this point, Treecko climbed out of Kazuma's arms, nuzzling his face and wiping away the blood on his cheek.
This battle had come suddenly and ended just as abruptly. Once the wild Pokémon retreated from the area, the Pioneer Corps and the mountain rulers began cleaning up the battlefield.
Meanwhile, as Cacturne, who had just finished fighting and was preparing to return to its territory, heard the humans speaking, it turned its head and saw the playful interaction between Treecko and Kazuma. It immediately charged toward them.
Seeing Cacturne running toward them, Kazuma and his team instinctively bolted in the opposite direction.
Elsewhere, after ensuring that Regigigas was unharmed, Yuga and his Pokémon helped it locate the three Legendary giants that had fallen into the forest.
With Marshadow's departure, the control over the three Regis had been lifted. They felt deeply ashamed for having been manipulated by Marshadow and used as tools to seal Regigigas.
However, Regigigas did not blame them. Instead, it comforted them with kind words.
Subsequently, with Yuga's help, Regigigas found the remnants of its shattered temple.
The temple had been thoroughly destroyed—stepped on by Regigigas itself and plummeted from a great height—reduced to nothing more than a pile of rubble, utterly unrecognizable as a temple.
Yet, amidst the rubble, Regigigas managed to unearth an object that had been buried within the temple all along.
Yuga, still pondering what Marshadow had been seeking, watched as Regigigas pulled a stone coffin from the debris. Remarkably, the coffin was completely intact.
The stone coffin was relatively small—like a toy in the massive hand of Regigigas—but exceedingly heavy. When Regigigas placed it in front of Yuga, it hit the ground with such force that it created a deep depression.
The coffin was pale white, crudely made, and far from ornate. Its carvings were simple, almost primitive, yet its material was extraordinarily unique, as smooth and refined as jade.
As he examined the coffin, Yuga looked at Regigigas with curiosity and asked, "Regigigas, what's inside this…?"
He was deeply intrigued—what could be in the coffin that had driven Marshadow to such lengths, even risking sealing Regigigas, to open the temple?
"Regigigas~ Regigigas~"
Would you like to see it?
Because Yuga had helped it immensely, Regigigas held him in high regard, especially after learning that Yuga was the disciple of Mr. Kuni'o.
Regigigas had also known Mr. Kuni'o. Though their acquaintance wasn't particularly close, it held Mr. Kuni'o in great esteem.
"Huh? Really?"
Yuga hadn't expected Regigigas to allow him to see what was inside the coffin. He had assumed it contained something highly important and not easily revealed to others.
"Eh? May I?"
Yuga hadn't expected Regigigas to let him look inside the coffin. He had assumed it contained something incredibly important that couldn't be revealed easily.
Besides, if it turned out to be a corpse, wouldn't it be rather disrespectful to open it outright?
Before Yuga could respond, Regigigas had already lifted the lid of the coffin with one finger. Inside, as expected, was a corpse wrapped in white cloth, resembling a mummy.
What was more surprising was that the white cloth covering the corpse was spotless, as pristine as if it were brand new.
"This... is this a human corpse?" Yuga looked up at Regigigas and asked.
"Regigigas~"
Yes. Have you heard about Ghost World Messengers?
"I have," Yuga nodded. "Is this the corpse of a Ghost World Messenger?"
"Regigigas~"
Yes, this is the body of the very first Ghost World Messenger.
Hearing this, Regigigas's tone was filled with nostalgia. It was clear that it shared a special bond with the owner of this corpse.
The first Ghost World Messenger's body? Yuga was taken aback. That's quite an impressive lineage!
"But it's just a corpse, isn't it? What does Marshadow want with it? Or is it looking for something else?"
"Regigigas~"
Other than me, this corpse is the only thing in the temple.
In ancient times, there had been turmoil in the Ghost World. A sentient spirit had attempted to usurp the Ghost World's consciousness. After its defeat, it fled to the Pokémon world, and the first Marshadow was born from this event.
To hunt down the spirit that had fled the Ghost World, the first Ghost World Messenger was created.
Today's GhostSpirit World Messengers guide the souls of the deceased who cannot enter the Ghost World due to unforeseen circumstances. However, the original purpose of the Ghost World Messengers was entirely different.
The first Marshadow had long since perished, and the mission of the Ghost World Messengers had naturally changed over time.
Listening to this ancient tale from Regigigas, Yuga was stunned. So, this was how Marshadow had come into existence?
"But I still don't understand why Marshadow wants this corpse," Yuga said. A corpse—what could anyone possibly do with it? He couldn't see anything special about it either.
"Regigigas~"
I don't know either.
Regigigas wasn't particularly knowledgeable about the affairs of the Ghost World. Its limited understanding came from what the owner of the coffin had told it.
The reason Regigigas guarded the body was simply because it had once been a dear friend.
When the owner of the body came to Regigigas, they were already on the brink of death. They had specifically instructed Regigigas to protect their body and allow no one to disturb it.
To fulfill its friend's last request, Regigigas had spent countless years guarding the temple.
