Chapter 2: Birth No 2

Fin POV
As it turns out, I'm not dead
After getting one tapped by the truck, I immediately woke up in a darkened, moist chamber. I could feel a heartbeat and murmurs; I wiggled my legs as they kicked against a wall, a fleshy wall...I think I'm inside a woman.
A womb, I think.
During my time here, I couldn't sleep, so I counted.
Timeskip...
It's been about a day since I awoke. Is my counting correct? It's been nice, though, being left alone with my thoughts. I always thought death would cause you to relive your life momentarily, to reminisce on what you'd done during your time.
I guess this was that; it was just a lot weirder. Am I going to go over my life again? Will I get to see the parents who left me in an orphanage, who abandoned me?
My thoughts were cut short as the 'chamber' began to contract on me, pushing and tightening all over my body. The feeling was intense; it wasn't painful per se, more like an uncomfortable bear hug.
If babies feel this, I get what all the crying is for.
The contractions continued for about an hour, with each iteration pushing me further upwards. Soon enough, I saw a blinding light as a hand grasped itself around my head.
The hands pulled and pulled before my sight was blinded by light.
After my eyes adjusted, I could finally view the room. It wasn't a standard hospital, as I'd thought; instead, it was a farmhouse, stacks of haybales and hay littered everywhere.
I'd looked up to see an elderly woman with frayed grey hair and a sagged face as she smiled softly at me; I then turned my head to see my 'Mother'. She was pretty normal-looking, and her long black hair was everywhere. Her face flushed red; I guess the labour exhausted her.
"Congratulations, Helga, it's a beautiful boy", the old lady exclaimed, rocking me in her arms.
Helga? That's a pretty old name.
Helga smiled, raising her arms towards the old lady and me. I just stared at her, not wanting to move around, my body still sensitive from birth; however, once I'd entered Helga's embrace, it was like a whole new feeling.
Behind her exhausted smile was love, a mother's love. I never had a 'real' mother before, so this experience was new to me, given the current circumstances. I couldn't help but be drawn to it.
"You've got quite the unique child there, Helga! Not a single tear," The old lady commented.
"He better be", Helga joked weakly, still tired.
"Indeed, have you thought of a name yet?
Suddenly, a screen appeared before my eyes, and the world around me turned grey.
[Welcome Player]
Is this what I think it is?
Hell yeah! Woohoo! Yeah, baby!!
The screen was a deep blue with a fancy border. Looking around, the world seemed to have paused.
[CHOOSE NAME: ????? ]
I was surprised it'd let me pick a new name. I just opted to stay with Fin.
[CHOOSE NAME: FIN ]
Please don't make fun of me. I like the name.
The screen disappeared once I entered the name, and the colour returned to the world.
"His name shall be Fin, Fin Ashthorn" Helga nodded, combing my head with her fingers.
Ashthorn's a nice last name, way better than fucking Louvre.
"Congratulations Helga"
"Thank you. I appreciate the help, Agatha."
"Of course, child, I was happy to help you. For now, you must rest."
Agatha took me from my Mother's hands, allowing Helga to sleep. She walked out of the farmhouse. Outside was a large field of animals: chickens, boars, etc. The air felt crisp; I could tell how much cleaner it was just breathing it in.
I think it's obvious I'm not in my time, and with the introduction of that system screen, I may not even be in my universe. I've read enough fanfics to know that you generally get a system when you travel to the world of a particular game, movie, or show.
The first thing is figuring out where I should go. Let's hope I'm in somewhere decent, and I'd kill myself if I were in Berserk or something. From looking at the environment and the clothing Agatha and Helga wore, it was somewhere older or perhaps a basic fantasy world.
Fuck, I guess that means Berserk is still on the table.
How about this system? It might be one of those AI ones.
...Hello System? Anyone there?
'Status'
'Open'
There's gotta be a code word.
'Skills'
'...Display'
Suddenly, the world went grey once again; time froze around me.
And as before, a blue screen appeared.
[Multiversal Gacha System]
Welcome, player, to Faerun; this Gacha system is here to assist you in your endeavours as you scour the world and continue your journey...
Hey, I'm in Faerun, and that's a relief. I looked at the screen smiling, though it looked like there was some reading to do. I sighed internally and let the fun begin.
One reading session later...
I'm gonna kill whoever invented reading.
Most of it so far is basic gacha rules, which most of you know: rolling gives skills and items, blah blah blah. The point system or PP is gained through killing things, completing missions and, most importantly, how close I get to the plot.
It doesn't specify which plot, though. I'm not too sure about that yet.
Alright, let's see...
Normal rolls: 100 PP each. Fifty per cent chance for common, thirty for uncommon, fifteen for rare, and a glorious five per cent for mythical. Five per cent. It might as well be zero with my luck.
Then there's the second option: 1,000 PP for a guaranteed rare or mythical. Forty per cent is rare, and sixty per cent is mythical. My heart—or whatever part of me that still felt like my old self—jumped at the thought. I could get Limitless or become a Saiyan; the opportunities are endless.
Wait, this part says point gain is limited while a child is still young! The fuck is this shit! I'm getting nerfed before the story begins!
Only 20PP a day.
At that rate, even if I worked my ass off every day and reached the max, it'd take me fifty days to afford one guaranteed roll—fifty days of lying here, unable to move or do anything but exist. I don't know if I can survive that long without losing my mind.
The normal roll, though, is five days. Five days for one shot. Sure, fifty per cent of the time, I'd get common junk, but there was always that five per cent chance for something mythical. Something that could change everything. Five days felt manageable.
Fifty? Not so much.
But the risk. What if I repeatedly burned through weeks of grinding to pull worthless trash? Could I stomach that kind of failure? The thought made my insides churn—or maybe that was just because I had the stomach of a literal baby.
I stared at the options, the glowing text mocking me with its simplicity.
Five days for a chance. Fifty days for certainty.
Could I wait? Did I even want to?
The screen then closed, and my decision was still in the air. Time resumed. Agatha resumed her walk as we entered the main home. It wasn't a large house, a basic kitchen and dining room. We descended the stairs and entered a nursery as Agatha laid me in my cot.
"Rest now, child." Agatha cooed.
'Hands off me, woman!'
She kept flicking my lips and pushing my cheeks; I tried pushing them with my baby hands.
After a while, she stopped and left the room, leaving me alone.
'Display', I thought
The screen opened, displaying a large red button labelled 'Roll' with a counter right above it.
Points: 100
At least it lets me start with points. Here goes. I slowly took control of my fist, tapping the roll.
...
...
...
[You have rolled - Shadowheart's Panties - Common]
'I honestly should've expected that.'
I sat up, looking around my room, a single lamp flickering in the corner beside a large rocking chair. This was going to be my prison for a long time, but the stillness of the room was a relief, I guess.
No crying, no cloying smells, no stupid old ladies.
Just me and the system. I scanned the interface, looking for anything I could exploit. My first role was already abysmal. At that rate, I'd be stuck here for weeks, months, or even just for a single point.
There had to be another way.
My eyes fell on a section of the sections I hadn't noticed before: Achievements.
"Achievements?" I mumbled, which came out as babble.
I selected the tab, and a new screen appeared, filled with various tasks and milestones.
Defeat 100 enemies - 1000PP
Acquire your first Mythical item [NOT from rolls] - 1000PP
Kill a Major Boss - 3000PP
Yeah, these are not happening anytime soon. However, there were some other interesting ones as I scrolled down the list.
First Steps - 10PP
First Words - 20PP
'Those are more reasonable.'
Make an adult laugh 50 times (5/50) - 200PP
My small lips curved, that was doable. Cause if there was one thing babies were good at, it was making adults laugh. All I had to do was play my cards right. The door to the room swung open; this time, it was Agatha.
She smiled as she saw me, our eyes locked together. She looked me up in her arms and began humming softly. She then sat in the rocking chair.
"You are quite the energetic baby", Agatha noted
'Time to get me some points'
I cooed slightly, a tiny, deliberate noise that caught her attention.
She looked over, her face lighting up. "Oh, aren't you just the sweetest little thing?"
'Alright, step one complete. Time to ramp it up.' I scrunched up my face, sticking my tongue out in the most exaggerated way I could manage. Her laugh was immediate, light and genuine.
"That's adorable!" she said, rubbing her nose against mine.
'I can't lie. This is kinda nice.' I mentally shook my head, 'No. I need to lock in!'
I repeated the gesture, this time adding some gurgling sounds. She laughed even harder this time. This was too easy.
I looked at my Achievements.
Make an adult laugh 50 times (7/50) - 200PP
I grinned internally. This was going to be easier than I thought. All I had to do was keep up the act.
Time to milk this baby act for all it's worth...pun intended
