Chapter 27: Retreat

The sun was setting, casting golden hues across the castle's backyard. Alex and Daenerys stood near a large patch of open ground, with Ancalagon the Black resting on one side and the two smaller dragons lounging nearby. The atmosphere was peaceful, with a soft breeze rustling through the trees.

Daenerys looked at the sky. "It feels strange, doesn't it? This calm before the storm. With everything happening, I wonder if we'll ever have true peace."

Alex smiled. "Peace isn't given; it's built. And we're building something that will last. It won't be easy, but I believe in what we're doing."

"You know your Ancestors, they started wars, fought wars and won and that's how they ruled the Westros over 400 Years. You can't get peace without war, Daenerys. The sooner you realize that, the better for you".

"I know Alex, it's just all those people, Dothraki's died in thousands. It's just i never seen people dying in this huge numbers. It's a lot to take in".

Alex's caressed Daenerys cheeks with his hand, "I know, but you need to understand the gravity of what would have happened to you or your people if we hadn't killed them. They would have turned women in breeding machines, men and children slaves for their hardwork, and God knows..."

Before Alex could finish his sentence and Daenerys could respond, Mannul, the port and trade manager, approached. He bowed deeply before speaking.

"My king, my queen," Mannul began, "I bring good news. The two schools you asked for have been completed one for children and another for teenagers. They're ready to be staffed and opened to the public."

Alex's eyes lit up. "Excellent work, Mannul. Education is the foundation of progress. Without it, the people will remain stagnant."

Daenerys smiled. "It's wonderful to see the people finally given the chance to learn. These schools will change lives."

Alex nodded. "Mannul, Go talk to Leon, he knows where the teachers are. You can go ahead and Assign them to these schools immediately. Make sure the children and teens of Pentos know they have a place to learn now. And ensure their families understand the importance of this."

"Yes, my king," Mannul replied. "It will be done."

As Mannul turned to leave, Alex stopped him. "One more thing, Mannul. I need you to prepare a large warehouse near the city's outskirts."

"For what purpose, my king?" Mannul asked, curious.

Alex leaned forward slightly, his voice steady. "It will be a factory, a place where we'll produce weapons guns, to be precise. A factory allows for large-scale production of goods efficiently. Imagine a place where workers operate tools and machines to create hundreds of weapons in a short time."

Mannul looked bewildered. "Such a thing exists?"

"It will soon," Alex replied confidently. "This is the key to maintaining our military edge. Once we have it operational, we'll no longer need to rely solely on the system for firearms. We'll make our own."

Mannul nodded, albeit still slightly confused. "I'll begin preparations immediately, my king."

The reason for factory is because Alex can't afford to keep buying guns or other artillery from system. As he will take over new cities and eventually over the whole of essos. It'll be hard to arm his army from system firearms.

While Alex and Daenerys discussed their plans, two Faceless Men had already begun their infiltration of the army. Over the past weeks, they had observed the training routines and habits of the soldiers.

That night, under the cover of darkness, they struck. Silently killing two unsuspecting common soldiers during their patrol, the Faceless Men assumed their identities.

They donned the soldiers' uniforms, taking their weapons and blending seamlessly into the ranks. With firearms now in their possession, they bided their time, waiting for the perfect opportunity to strike at Alex.

Back in the castle's backyard, Daenerys suddenly shivered. "I feel… uneasy. As if something's wrong."

Alex glanced at her, his expression serious. "You're not the only one. I've had the same feeling for a while now. We've been too fortunate that no threats have materialized."

Daenerys looked at him, concern etched on her face. "Do you think we're in danger?"

"We're always in danger," Alex replied. "But we'll handle whatever comes our way."

Daenerys nodded, though the uneasy feeling lingered as they returned to the castle.

Next day

The city of Pentos buzzed with excitement as Alex and Daenerys stood before the gates of the newly constructed schools. A large crowd had gathered to witness the grand opening, the first of its kind in the city's history.

The schools were modest but well-built, one designed for younger children and the other for teenagers. Both bore banners with the sigil Alex had adopted: a dragon entwined with a sword, symbolizing strength and wisdom.

Alex stepped forward to address the crowd. "Today marks the beginning of a brighter future for Pentos. These schools are more than buildings; they are the foundation of knowledge and opportunity. Every child will have a chance to learn, to grow, and to contribute to the betterment of our city."

The crowd cheered, their voices echoing through the streets. Daenerys added, "Education is the key to freedom. With it, we can break the chains of ignorance and build a society where everyone has a voice."

After the ribbon was cut, Alex and Daenerys toured the schools, inspecting the classrooms and meeting the summoned teachers. The sight of children eagerly stepping into their new classrooms filled both rulers with pride and hope.

Although there weren't many students but still it's good to start with small numbers. With time more families will learn the value of education and more youth will become literate.

Later, Alex, Daenerys, and Mannul traveled to the outskirts of Pentos to inspect the warehouse Mannul had prepared for the factory.

"This space is perfect," Alex said, looking around the large, sturdy building. "We'll need to bring in tools, machines, and skilled workers, but this will work."

Mannul hesitated. "I've never seen a factory in action, my king. Are you sure it will work as planned?"

Alex smiled. "Trust me, Mannul. Once this factory is operational, we'll revolutionize production in Pentos. It's not just about weapons it's about creating jobs, driving the economy, and setting an example for the rest of the world."

Daenerys nodded in agreement. "This isn't just for war. It's for the future of our people."

Satisfied with their inspection, they made their way back to the castle.

As their carriage passed a group of soldiers running drills, a sudden shadow darkened the area. Ancalagon swooped down, landing with a thunderous thud. His 13-foot-long body and gleaming obsidian scales glistened ominously in the sunlight.

"Grrrr...grrrrrr...."

The soldiers froze in place, terror evident in their eyes as Ancalagon approached, sniffing the air. His low growl sent shivers through the group, and a few started to step back in panic.

Inside the carriage, Daenerys looked out and frowned. "What's he doing?"

"Probably trying to scare them just for fun. I mean, he is still just a kid even though he has grown big. I'll go check on him".

Alex stepped out, motioning for her to stay inside with her personal guards and the smaller dragons. He approached Ancalagon cautiously, raising a hand.

"Easy, boy. What's wrong?" Alex said, his voice calm but firm.

Ancalagon growled lowly, his massive head turning toward the group of soldiers. His golden eyes narrowed, fixating on two men who had begun to sweat profusely.

The two Faceless Men, disguised as common soldiers, hadn't expected to encounter such a massive and majestic dragon. They had thought the dragons would still be small enough to perch on a shoulder, but Ancalagon was nothing like the stories they had heard.

His sharp horns and razor-like teeth made them feel exposed, even in disguise. They exchanged a nervous glance, their confidence waning. They have never seen a Dargon before. But they have heard of it and this Dragon was nothing like the stories or lores that they have heard. Even their own information from organisation doesn't say what kind of Dragon is this.

Alex stepped between Ancalagon and the soldiers, placing a hand on the dragon's snout. "Calm down, boy. These are our men. They mean no harm."

Ancalagon growled once more but eventually lowered his head, pressing it against Alex's chest in a sign of submission. Alex stroked the dragon's head, murmuring soothing words.

"Back to your drills!" Alex commanded the soldiers.

The group hurriedly resumed their run, though the two Faceless Men lagged behind, their faces pale.

Ancalagon let out a soft huff before taking to the skies again, circling above as if to keep watch.

As Alex re-entered the carriage, Daenerys looked at him curiously. Charmed by his authority as a King.

Alex and Daenerys sat at the long dining table in their castle, sharing a quiet dinner. The warmth of the candlelight flickered against the stone walls, and the soft hum of conversation between them filled the room.

Daenerys tilted her head as she watched Alex, noticing his distant expression. "You've been quiet for a while. What's on your mind?"

Alex paused, the fork in his hand halfway to his mouth. "Ancalagon," he said suddenly, his voice low.

Daenerys raised an eyebrow. "What about him?"

"The way he acted today… at first i thought it was just act of child, who is just entertaining himself. The more i thought, the more i realise that What if…" Alex trailed off, his mind racing.

"What if what?"

Alex stood abruptly. "What if the Faceless Men have already infiltrated our ranks? That would explain why he reacted so strongly to those soldiers."

Daenerys's eyes widened. "You think they've disguised themselves?"

"I need to find out." Alex turned to the Unsullied guards stationed at the door. "Summon Leon. Tell him to bring me the group of soldiers who were running drills today."

The guards bowed and left the room.

A short while later, Leon entered the dining hall with the group of soldiers who had been on drill runs earlier. They stood in formation, saluting Alex.

"Where are Jura and Kito?" the Unsullied squad leader asked, his voice cold and commanding.

The soldiers exchanged uneasy glances. One of them stepped forward hesitantly. "My king, we couldn't find them. They weren't in their bunk beds, and no one has seen them since the drills."

Alex clenched his fists, his suspicions solidifying. He dismissed the soldiers with a wave. "Go back to your barracks. Be ready for assembly at first light. I have an announcement to make."

Leon stayed behind, his expression tense. "What's going on, My King?"

Alex exhaled sharply. "I think Ancalagon sensed the Faceless Men among the soldiers. Those two missing men? They were likely the ones he reacted to."

Leon's eyes widened. "You're saying they've already infiltrated?"

"It seems so. And now they've fled," Alex replied grimly. "Tomorrow morning, we'll address this with the entire army. For now, keep this between us."

Leon nodded and left to prepare for the morning assembly.

When Alex returned to the table, Daenerys was waiting, her expression filled with concern.

"What happened?" she asked softly.

Alex explained everything the Faceless Men, Ancalagon's reaction, and the missing soldiers.

Daenerys leaned back, her face pale. "So, they've been watching us this whole time?"

"Seems like it. But they underestimated us," Alex said, his voice firm. "They didn't expect the dragons or the fact that Ancalagon has evolved far beyond anything they've seen in such a short span of time, thanks to the blood magic".

Daenerys nodded, her resolve hardening. "What's the plan?"

"Tomorrow, I'll address the army. We'll tighten security and make it clear that betrayal will not be tolerated. As for the Faceless Men, they'll think twice before coming back."

MEANWHILE, on other side.

Far beyond the city walls, two figures in dark cloaks rode through the moonlit night. Their horses moved swiftly, the sound of hooves muffled by the soft earth.

"That dragon… That thing wasn't in the reports," one of them said, his voice laced with frustration.

"Clearly, our intel was outdated," the other replied bitterly. "We were told the dragons were small, barely out of their shells. But that beast… It's a monster."

"And those guards of his they're armed with weapons that are far greater than ours. We'd be fools to attack now."

"We retreat. Return to Braavos and report the situation. This task is suicide. Even the Faceless Men don't take on impossible jobs."

They rode on in silence, their mission abandoned.
