Chapter 32: A Decision That’s Not Hers Alone
Orochimaru rested his chin on his hand, staring at Shizuka with an unreadable expression. The atmosphere around the table was… strange, to say the least. Saya looked like she wanted to disappear, Yuriko was very pointedly avoiding eye contact, and Saeko was gripping her sword like it was the only thing keeping her sane.
"So let me get this straight," he finally said, voice calm. "You want me to save your friend."
Shizuka nodded eagerly. "Yes."
Her breasts bounced in a way that was far too distracting for everyone involved.
Orochimaru made sure his gaze stayed exactly where it should, ignoring the biological ambush. "And in exchange… you're offering yourself?"
"Hmm!" Another nod. "Yes! Like Saya-chan and Yuriko-san."
Saya twitched. Yuriko subtly inched further under the table.
Orochimaru's fingers tapped idly against the wooden surface. "And what exactly are you useful for?"
Shizuka straightened up, putting on her best 'responsible nurse' face. "I—I'm a nurse! I can help with injuries, first aid, medical care!" She paused, hesitating before adding, "And… and I can help you like Yuriko-san did."
The second the words left her mouth, her face went bright red.
After all, she had been one of the many unfortunate souls who heard everything last night.
Yuriko, meanwhile, looked like she wanted to sink into the nearest river and let the current carry her away.
But Orochimaru? He didn't give a damn about anyone's embarrassment.
He simply tilted his head and asked, "What about your friend? Is she important to you?"
Shizuka's usual airheadedness vanished in an instant. Her expression turned serious, her posture straightened. "Yes. She's my best friend."
Orochimaru studied her for a moment, then glanced briefly at Saya—who was already grimacing, clearly seeing where this was going.
"And after I save her?" he asked. "Are you planning to ask her to follow you to another world?"
"I…" Shizuka hesitated, biting her lip. She wasn't naive enough to think things would stay the same once they left. But at the same time, she couldn't decide something like that for someone else.
"I'll leave that decision to her," she finally said.
Orochimaru leaned back, tapping the table. "Although you want to offer yourself in exchange, you can't make this decision alone."
"What does that mean?" Shizuka frowned, confused—just like everyone else at the table.
"Aren't you going to come out, Shizuka Two?"
Everyone turned to Shizuka, only to see her expression shift.
It wasn't her usual carefree demeanor anymore.
Shizuka—or rather, the woman sitting in her place—narrowed her eyes.
"How did you know?" Her tone was firm, controlled—nothing like the usual carefree airhead everyone knew.
The sudden shift in her demeanour sent a wave of confusion across the table. Saya, Saeko, and even Yuriko stared, their brains scrambling to process what they were witnessing.
Orochimaru, however, remained utterly unfazed. If anything, he looked slightly amused.
"About you?" he mused. "Wasn't difficult to guess. The change in attitude, the shift in behaviour—switching back and forth. You appeared for mere seconds before, but that was enough."
Shizuka—or whatever part of her was in control right now—studied him carefully, as if weighing his words. "When did you know for certain?"
"The moment you first surfaced," he answered smoothly.
Saeko, watching the exchange with a sharp gaze, finally spoke. "Is she…?"
Saya, however, cut in immediately, her voice unusually firm. "A second personality."
Orochimaru inclined his head slightly. "Yes."
Orochimaru had anticipated this development since the day he arrived, but he only confirmed it last night.
He had sent shadow clones after everyone to monitor them.
"What are your thoughts on her decision?" he asked, directing his gaze at the newly emerged Shizuka.
She scoffed, her tone laced with sarcasm. "What can I say? That's her choice. I don't care about it."
"Alright then. You should go back."
Shizuka Two didn't even try to resist—she simply retreated, likely unable to predict Orochimaru's actions.
As soon as she was gone, the original Shizuka blinked and sighed. "I didn't expect others to find out about her," she admitted, slipping back into her usual self.
Her words made it clear—they were both fully aware of each other.
But Orochimaru had lost interest in that topic.
"Are you sure you don't want to change your mind?" he asked.
Shizuka shook her head firmly. "No. I know I can't save her by myself."
"If that's your final decision," he said, his tone neutral, "then so be it."
Shizuka exhaled softly, her hands clenched in her lap. Despite her usual ditzy behaviour, there was no hesitation in her eyes now.
Yuriko, still recovering from the earlier embarrassment, finally spoke up. "Do you have a plan for rescuing her?"
"Of course," Orochimaru replied smoothly.
Shizuka suddenly straightened, her usual bright expression returning. "Ah! But when do we go? Will it take long?"
Orochimaru raised a brow. "Eager, are we?"
"Of course!" She grinned. "She's my best friend, after all."
