In This Life, I Will Extremely Pamper My Short-Lived Husband

Chapter 19: Chapter 19 How did you get here?

Xu Jinzhi, who was already somewhat irritable, grew even more so and said with an impatient tone, "Come in!"

The person who pushed the door open was still Assistant Chen. Assistant Chen already knew that the young lady was in a bad mood before she even entered, so she hurriedly said before getting too close, "Mr. Xu, Professor Xie is here."

Xu Jinzhi had been looking down at her documents, reluctant to spare Assistant Chen an extra glance. However, upon hearing the news, she was taken aback and subconsciously looked up at Assistant Chen, "Who did you say?"

Initially on edge, Assistant Chen saw Mr. Xu look up and immediately put on a formulaic smile, "Xie Yanchuan, Professor Xie."

"Why did he come over?" Xu Jinzhi was very puzzled, but she had already stood up and was walking quickly toward the office door.

"The reception desk just called to inform us because of your engagement with Professor Xie, they let him come up directly. I've already told the reception that they must call to confirm first next time…"

Xu Jinzhi suddenly stopped and turned around, giving Assistant Chen a meaningful look.

Realizing her slip-up, Assistant Chen quickly changed her tune, "I meant to say it was the right thing for them to do. Who is Professor Xie? Of course, he can come over whenever he wants."

Xu Jinzhi scoffed, too lazy to argue further with Assistant Chen. Her melancholic mood had already improved the moment she knew Xie Yanchuan was here.

Leaving the office, Xu Jinzhi did not see Xie Yanchuan. She turned back and asked Assistant Chen, "Where is he?"

Assistant Chen was also taken aback. He had rushed to notify Mr. Xu as soon as he received the notice from the reception, "He should have already come up."

In a flash, Xu Jinzhi suddenly remembered something. Hadn't He Jingyi just left?

Xu Jinzhi's expression changed. There were three elevators running in the building besides the dedicated one. Surely they wouldn't happen to meet?

While thinking, Xu Jinzhi quickly walked toward the elevators, but she was still one step too late. By the time Xu Jinzhi arrived, she saw two men standing outside the elevator.

Xu Jinzhi inhaled sharply, only hoping that the foolish He Jingyi hadn't said anything absurd!

"Xie Yanchuan!" Xu Jinzhi called out loudly.

The two men at the elevator looked toward Xu Jinzhi. Xie Yanchuan still maintained his usual calm expression, as if nothing could ever stir much emotion in him.

However, He Jingyi looked furious, evidently having just glared at Xie Yanchuan with that expression. His face did not have time to change when he turned to look at Xu Jinzhi.

Xu Jinzhi felt overwhelmed, instinctively thinking that the brainless He Jingyi must have said something stupid, and she couldn't help but curse him in her mind again.

Approaching Xie Yanchuan, Xu Jinzhi ignored He Jingyi and asked with some confusion, "Why did you come here?"

Xie Yanchuan looked at the girl in front of him, who seemed somewhat anxious, opened his mouth, and then softly said, "You said you were not busy this afternoon, so I came over."

"I'm not busy, but weren't you busy with your experiments?" Xu Jinzhi voiced her inner doubts. If it weren't for Xie Yanchuan being busy, she certainly would have gone to ask him out on a date much earlier.

Xie Yanchuan remained silent for a moment, and the quiet air carried an eerie undertone.

Xu Jinzhi realized something, then directly grabbed Xie Yanchuan's wrist, "Let's go to the office first."

Xu Jinzhi pulled Xie Yanchuan away, and behind them, He Jingyi's voice came, full of reluctance, "Jinzhi!"

Xu Jinzhi heard him but quickened her pace, dragging Xie Yanchuan with her, while Yanchuan glanced back at He Jingyi, who was still standing by the elevator.

When they reached the office, Xu Jinzhi finally let go of Xie Yanchuan.

The two faced each other, and Yanchuan seemed to be at a loss for words. He handed the bag in his hand to Jinzhi, "I'm not sure if this is the afternoon tea you were talking about."

It was then that Jinzhi noticed the paper bag in Yanchuan's hand. From the look of the bag, she knew which shop it was, the one she had mentioned to Yanchuan on WeChat not long ago.

Jinzhi's face was filled with surprise, "Did you go buy this especially?"

Yanchuan didn't say whether he had or hadn't, but the implication was quite clear, and Jinzhi couldn't possibly misunderstand, especially since she had sent him a message about it at noon.

This shop doesn't deliver, one could only buy in-person or send someone to buy it, but Jinzhi thought it was too much of a hassle and planned to stop by after work.

"What's going on with you? Aren't you very busy? How did you find time to go buy afternoon tea?" Jinzhi asked again, voicing her curiosity.

Yanchuan looked at Jinzhi and seemed to have a hard time speaking, but after a while, he said, "There was a problem with the experimental results, and it has stopped now."

The experimental results were not promising, and what was previously thought to be a breakthrough proved useless, leading to the cessation of the experiment. After leaving the lab, Yanchuan didn't know what he should do.

Seeing the message from Jinzhi, he hesitated and ended up here.

When Yanchuan said this, he was calm, but Jinzhi could still hear a hint of melancholy in his words.

Although they worked in completely different fields, Jinzhi could understand Yanchuan's feelings, especially knowing how much he devoted himself to his work.

How many in the pharmaceutical field spend their whole lives without developing a useful drug?

Seeing Jinzhi silent, Yanchuan continued, "Sorry for coming over without giving you a heads-up, I hope I didn't interrupt your work."

"Of course not!" Jinzhi said in surprise, then smiled warmly at Yanchuan, "Thank you for the afternoon tea."

Yanchuan smiled gently, then seemed to have nothing else to say.

"Then, do you have plans for today?" asked Jinzhi.

Yanchuan nodded slightly. He had no lectures that afternoon, and since the lab results were disappointing, everyone had left to rest; he himself had no leads either.

Thinking about this, Yanchuan remembered the young man he had encountered when he was about to leave the elevator.

He asked himself, why should he be with Jinzhi?

He didn't answer this question to the other person.

"Does that mean we can have dinner together tonight?" Jinzhi tilted her head slightly, a look of delight on her face.

Yanchuan nodded again; he wasn't busy with anything, so it was indeed possible.

"Then wait for me a moment, let me finish signing these documents, and then we can go!" Jinzhi said hurriedly, barely having time to eat her afternoon tea as she rushed back to her desk to sit down.
