Chapter 17: Chapter 17
The nun reluctantly handed over a membership application to Kei. With that, Kei now held four membership applications in his hands.
"Humiliation! This is pure humiliation!"
"As the saying goes, 'Good things come in threes,' but we've already been defeated three times by him! This is an utter disgrace!"
The nun shouted as she returned downstairs to where the others were gathered.
"But aren't we often rejected?"
"You're right. We shouldn't feel down over such a small setback. Our greatest strength as members of the Axis Cult is our optimism!"
"The spirit of never giving up no matter how many times we fail! That's the biggest advantage of our Axis Cult!"
"Next, we have to keep trying! Hmm, let's get some sleep first, and then continue our efforts tomorrow morning!"
After the nun finished speaking, everyone agreed with her and then dispersed to go home and sleep. After all, they were human, and they couldn't work non-stop.
...
The next morning.
"Alright! Let's continue our efforts!"
"Today's plan is to pretend we're members of the Eris Heresy and try to earn his trust. Once he trusts us, we'll secretly hand him a membership application."
"We'll tell him it's a registration form for the Eris Church. He'll definitely sign it without any suspicion!"
"Oh ho ho ho!"
The nun felt incredibly clever. Who else but a true believer in the Goddess of Water could come up with such a perfect plan?
The group entered the inn and asked the waitress for some information.
"Huh? He left early this morning! Said he was going to work!"
The nun showed a surprised expression.
"Yes, Mr. Kei is an adventurer. He paid his lodging fees this morning and went to the Adventurer's Guild."
The waitress explained.
"Why didn't you stop him?! If he's gone, how can we get our revenge?"
"Are you telling me we have to chase him into the wilderness, camp out every day, and try to win him over while he's working?!"
The nun complained.
"Um, Sister, isn't it a bit too much to disturb someone while they're working?"
Although the Axis Cult members were mostly crazy, they still had some basic sense of ethics.
"Sorry, I got too worked up."
"Indeed, disturbing someone's work isn't right. Then, we'll wait here and ambush him when he comes back from work!"
The nun found a spot to sit down and began her wait, her eyes glued to the inn's entrance. She wasn't even working anymore, but then again, the Axis Cult didn't really have much for her to do.
It was all about recruiting, recruiting, and damn it, recruiting!
...
Meanwhile, at the Adventurer's Guild.
"Only one quest at a time?"
Kei asked the receptionist behind the counter.
"Yes, that's right. The monsters around here are quite dangerous, so adventurers aren't allowed to take on multiple quests at once."
Leona replied.
"In that case, after completing a quest, I have to come back to submit it, then pick up another quest, and repeat the whole process. That's a lot of wasted time."
Kei scratched his head, feeling that this approach was too inefficient. It would significantly slow down his leveling progress.
Back in Axel, he would take on multiple quests at once, completing them all on the road, and then returning to submit them all at once.
Normally, such behavior was not allowed, but Kei's reputation and prestige in Axel were so high that the guild turned a blind eye to it. They still recorded his quests as if completed at different times for the official reports.
"Rules from above, but there are always ways around them."
"Sister, don't be so rigid. Let me take on multiple quests at once, and I'll even pay you a little something for each quest I take."
"How about it?"
Kei realized that doing quests one at a time was inefficient. It would greatly hinder his progress. So, he decided to try the good old tactic of bribery.
"Sorry, even though the money is tempting, my professional ethics won't allow it."
Leona was unmoved.
"I'll double the amount!"
"No."
"Double it again!"
"No!"
"Triple!"
"N-no, I can't..."
Leona looked at the Eris currency Kei placed on the counter, her hand instinctively reaching toward the money.
"N-no, it's still not okay!"
Leona slapped her own hand away, her expression turning serious as she spoke, "I really can't do that!"
"It's not just about the money; it's about ensuring the safety of adventurers and the stability of the guild."
"If an adventurer could take on multiple quests at once, then everyone would try to do it to earn more money and save time."
"Completing one quest in the wild is already difficult enough. If someone tries to do multiple quests at once, it would drain their mental and physical resources."
"In such situations, adventurers would be more prone to injury or even death! So, it's not allowed!"
After explaining herself, Leona seemed to find her own backbone. Her previously shaky resolve was now firm once more.
"Oh, I thought the rule was just to inconvenience adventurers, but I didn't expect there was a valid reason behind it."
"My apologies. I'll take this quest, then. Please process it for me."
Kei pulled a quest form from his stack and handed it over to Leona.
Leona looked at the form and her expression turned to one of shock. "You really want to take on this quest? Its difficulty level is extremely high."
"Up until now, more than a dozen teams have taken this quest, and not a single one has returned alive!"
"The guild recommends that at least a dozen elite adventurers work together to handle this quest. Otherwise, it's a death sentence!"
Leona looked at Kei, who had come alone, and couldn't help but feel concerned. Every year, there were always overconfident adventurers who met their end at the jaws of wild beasts.
"Don't worry, I'll be back with the target of this quest!"
"By the way, if I pull this off, can you open up a little exception and let me take multiple quests next time?"
Kei grinned.
"Well, good luck to you then."
Leona shook her head, not taking Kei's words seriously. In her mind, he would likely never return.
Not long after Kei left.
"That guy looked kind of familiar, didn't he?"
"He did look familiar... Oh, I remember now! That's the Quest King of Axel!"
"Seriously?"
"Of course! I just came from Axel. He's practically a legend there, known by everyone!"
"But this isn't Axel. The monsters here are way stronger!"
"You're underestimating the Quest King. Rumor has it, he's defeated several of the Demon King's officers before!"
"That's just exaggerated talk. His blessings didn't seem that impressive."
Listening to the conversation, Leona recalled the confident look Kei had when he left. Suddenly, she found herself hoping he would return.
