Infinite Evolution: My Idle Evolution System

Chapter 236: To The Land of Nightmares

This meant that the unseen enemies Cassius was facing could be as weak as the SS- Rank or as ridiculously powerful as the SS+++ Rank. Though, to know for certain, he'd have to take the risk and venture into their skull-shaped island. Which, frankly speaking, was impossible as he was.

"First, the weaker Demon Kings of HELL," he muttered, "then the extraterrestrial threat that seeks something from me."

But, as those were major goals, he still had some more minor events he had to progress.

To begin with—the Nightmarescape.

"Even now, I don't really know where this dimension even is, same with the Land of Beginnings," he said. "It could be part of the System, or it could be somewhere else entirely. But regardless of what the case is, I have to have the strength that comes from slaying Nightmares."

With a reaffirming train of thought, Cassius balled his fists before asking the System to transport him into the Nightmarescape. This time, he would stay in there for six hours—which was fine according to the System. In fact, it enthusiastically told him he could stay in there as long as he could hold out.

Though he didn't know just yet why exactly it said that the way it did…

However, some time later, he would understand very well why the Sadistic System was so passionate when it came to the Nightmarescape.

His Sword God Trainer Rank and Phoenix Bloodline would soon be jumping up and down in joy… Same as with his AP acquisition through trolling others…

Upon re-arrival in the Land of Beginnings, when time resumed:

"Nightmare Slayer Cadet Cassius—Assigned to Slayer Platoon #42!"

"!!!" "!!!" "!!!"

The expressions of many people in the Mistalore Throne Room drastically changed as almost everyone looked at the nonchalant Cassius with pity. The participants that had only survived thanks to him felt like speaking up, but in the face of the 2nd Class Slayer Ministers, they could do nothing but turn their heads in shame.

Yuna Mistalore, however, was not experiencing the same difference in status. "Father, sending him to Slayer Platoon #42 is a dishonor to someone with as much talent as him. Please convince the Ministers of—"

"That's enough."

The King's booming voice silenced both his daughter and the chatter bouncing off the walls in the room. He indifferently looked down at the seemingly unresponsive raven-haired young man below. Something felt different about him as opposed to just a second ago, but he couldn't pinpoint exactly what that something was.

Yet, as King Mistalore met the unyielding glint in the young man's gaze, a rare smile crossed his face. Though faint, it carried weight, marking the moment he made his decision:

"Cadet Cassius will be assigned to Slayer Platoon #42," he announced. Then singled out the young man as he said, "Good luck, Cadet."

The Ministers sinisterly grinned, whereas the other Cadets put their heads down and avoided eye contact with the sheep being sent out to the slaughterhouse.

"But Father—" Yuna attempted to say, but was interrupted by King Mistalore's cold glare and his equally cold voice:

"My decision is final, Yuna."

Unwillingness to comply flared within the 12th Princess, but in the end, all she could do was bite her lips and hang her head low.

Cassius, on the other hand—who had just returned—honestly had no clue why everyone was acting so dramatically over the announcement of the platoon he would be assigned to.

What could be so bad about it?

"Ahhh!! My legs!!! My legs were blown off!!! S-Someone, please—"

SPURT!

A helmet-covered head was lobbed off its shoulders before sailing through the air, creating a gory blood trail behind it. The head eventually landed right in front of the blank face of one Mr. Cassius Steele.

'Okay… Now I see why everyone looked as if they were sending me off to my funeral when I left for the Land of Nightmares…'

All around him was a world shrouded in darkness. He—and his platoon—lay battling endless hordes of Nightmares at the bottom of a limitlessly large gorge. The gorge was formed in a way that from its entrance, everything was a downhill slope from there. It was unknown how far the downward slope declined for, but Cassius and the rest of Slayer Platoon #42 were around 3,000 meters in.

Things were, however, not looking so optimistic for them, as they had been ambushed by groups of Rank 2 Nightmares as soon as they passed the 2,800-meter mark…

Two weeks had passed since Cassius made his first return to the Land of Beginnings. Barely any time had gone by in the outside world, with the Daily Quest still waiting to be completed. Yet, when he bid farewell to the oddly distant-acting Yuna and finally set off for the Nightmarescape a day ago, he quickly met up with his new platoon. After taking a bit of time to get to know each other's strengths and weaknesses, they set off for the 'Boundless Gorge,' which served as one of the final frontiers for the Land of Beginnings' defense against Nightmare Invasions.

Although Cassius didn't think much of the depression lingering among every member of his platoon when they were talking, it wasn't until they were ambushed that he realized why they were so gloomy.

They were… They were sent out to die.

And they knew that.

Slayer Platoon #42 was a suicide platoon—never meant to return home.

This was why not a single member of the platoon appeared older than 20… for they died young…

And today—more so than other days Platoon #42 set out—was one maxed out in peril.

"Set up a line of defense!! We can survive this as long as we—"

SPURT!

A black scorpion tail pierced through the owner of that commanding voice—the voice of the stand-in Platoon Captain.

The previous Platoon Captain had died a few seconds prior. And now the stand-in Platoon Captain was dead. Therefore, a stand-in of the stand-in became the new captain.

"You and you, back up that side!! We can't let them take out our vanguard—"

SPURT!
