Chapter 5: The Defence Of The Village
The boy crouched behind a barrel, his heart pounding as he listened to the bandits' demands. Their leader, a burly man with a jagged scar across his face, barked orders at the terrified villagers.
"Bring out the women and girls! Any of you try to resist, and we'll burn this village to the ground!"
The villagers, armed with farming tools and makeshift weapons, stood their ground, but their fear was palpable. They were outnumbered and outmatched, and they knew it. Still, the village elder stepped forward, his voice trembling but defiant.
"We will not hand over our people to the likes of you! Leave now, or face the consequences!"
The bandit leader laughed, a cruel, grating sound. "Consequences? You think a bunch of farmers can stop us? Fine. We'll take what we want by force!"
The boy's fists clenched. He couldn't stand by and let this happen. His **Resilience** and **Determination** burned within him, urging him to act. But he needed a plan.
**[Newton: Analyzing situation. Bandit numbers: 15. Villager numbers: 20, but poorly armed and untrained. Recommend utilizing Intimidation to disrupt their morale and create an opening for intervention.]**
The boy nodded. "Intimidation, huh? Let's see if I can pull that off."
He stood up, stepping out of the shadows and into the square. His sudden appearance caught the bandits off guard, and for a moment, the entire village fell silent. The boy's eyes locked onto the bandit leader, and he channeled every ounce of his willpower into his voice.
"Leave. Now."
His words echoed through the square, carrying an unexpected weight. The bandits hesitated, some even taking a step back. The boy's **Intimidation** skill was working, but he knew it wouldn't be enough on its own.
**[Common Skill Acquired: Intimidation. The ability to instill fear in others through threats or displays of force has been unlocked.]**
The bandit leader recovered quickly, his face twisting into a snarl. "Who do you think you are, kid? You're gonna regret sticking your nose where it doesn't belong!"
He signaled to his men, and the bandits charged. The boy's mind raced as he assessed the situation. He was outnumbered, but he had the advantage of speed and skill. He gripped his makeshift spear tightly, his **Spear/Polearm Mastery** guiding his movements.
The first bandit lunged at him with a rusty sword. The boy sidestepped the attack and countered with a swift thrust, disarming the man with ease. Another bandit came at him from the side, but the boy ducked under the swing and delivered a powerful kick to his knee, sending him to the ground.
**[Common Skill Acquired: Martial Arts. Proficiency in unarmed combat techniques has been unlocked.]**
The boy moved like a whirlwind, his **Agility** and **Strength** allowing him to outmaneuver and overpower his opponents. But the bandits kept coming, and he knew he couldn't keep this up forever. He needed to even the odds.
Spotting a pile of stones nearby, the boy grabbed one and hurled it at a bandit who was advancing on a villager. The stone struck the man square in the forehead, knocking him out cold.
**[Common Skill Acquired: Throwing. The ability to throw projectiles with accuracy and force has been unlocked.]**
Encouraged by the boy's actions, the villagers rallied. Armed with whatever they could find, they joined the fight, their fear replaced by determination. The tide began to turn, and the bandits found themselves on the defensive.
The bandit leader roared in frustration. "Fall back! We'll deal with this brat another time!"
The bandits retreated, leaving their wounded behind. The villagers cheered, their gratitude evident as they surrounded the boy. The village elder approached him, tears in his eyes.
"Thank you, stranger. You've saved us all. What is your name?"
The boy hesitated. He hadn't thought about his name since arriving in this world. But as he looked at the grateful faces around him, he realized it didn't matter. What mattered was what he did next.
"You can call me… Kai," he said, the name coming to him instinctively.
The elder nodded. "Kai, you are a hero to us. Please, stay and rest. You've earned it."
Kai smiled, but his mind was already racing. The bandits would be back, and he needed to be ready. With his growing arsenal of skills and the support of the villagers, he knew he could protect them. But he also knew this was just the beginning.
