Kage no Densetsu: The Shadowborn's Quest

Chapter 49: Episode Forty-Nine: Retreat and Reflection: A Taste of Light’s Culture

The room shook violently as the Guardians slowly rose to their feet, their bodies crackling with renewed energy. Ren, Sakayanagi, and Shigan stood panting, their powers drained after their all-out assault. They had given everything, yet the Light Guardians still stood—stronger than ever. The trio knew that pushing forward would mean certain defeat.

"We can't beat them," Shigan grunted, clenching his fists. His eyes darted to Ren, who still wore a determined, yet frustrated expression.

Ren's gaze flickered between the Guardians and the Light Stone that now glowed brighter, pulsing as if responding to their failed efforts. His body was still trembling from the overwhelming force he had unleashed, but it wasn't enough.

Before Ren could make his next move, a familiar voice called out from behind them.

"Enough! Retreat, now!"

The sage had arrived. His presence alone seemed to steady the air around them, calming the tension in the room. With a wave of his hand, the old man created a barrier of light, blocking the Guardians' approach.

"Sage!" Sakayanagi gasped in relief. "What are you doing here?"

"There's no time," the sage replied. His voice, though calm, carried an urgency that was impossible to ignore. "You're not ready to face them yet. Come with me."

Ren wanted to protest, to charge forward again and finish the fight, but deep down, he knew the truth. They had been outmatched. With a heavy sigh, he nodded. "Let's go."

The sage waved his hand once more, and in an instant, the trio was surrounded by a brilliant flash of light. When the light faded, they found themselves outside the castle, far from the Guardians and the Light Stone.

Breathing heavily, Ren collapsed onto a bench in the quiet streets of the Light City. Sakayanagi and Shigan sat beside him, equally exhausted.

"Not ready… we were so close," Ren muttered, his frustration evident in every word.

The sage stood before them, his eyes filled with understanding but also sternness. "You've improved greatly, but the Light Guardians are not to be taken lightly. Their power is far beyond what you've faced so far. You need more training."

Sakayanagi looked down at her hands, the blue flames that once burned brightly now nothing but flickers. "But how? We've already trained so hard."

The sage shook his head. "Your potential is vast, but your mastery is still lacking. Each of you has untapped abilities, ones that require not just power but also strategy and wisdom."

Shigan exhaled, leaning back on the bench. "So, what do we do now? We can't just keep failing."

"You won't," the sage said firmly. "But for now, rest. Your bodies and minds need to recover. Go, explore the city, and regain your strength. There's more to training than just fighting."

Ren exchanged a glance with Sakayanagi and Shigan before nodding slowly. "Alright. Let's take a break. We'll regroup and come back stronger."

With that, the trio stood and began to wander the streets of the Light City, searching for food and drink to replenish their energy. As they walked through the bustling marketplace, the bright lights of the city shone down on them, illuminating the various stalls and vendors offering all kinds of delicacies.

They found a cozy, open-air café that specialized in local cuisine and decided to sit down. A server approached them, greeting them with a smile.

"Welcome to Lumen's Bite. What can I get for you today?" she asked, her voice cheerful and melodic.

Ren, still thinking about the battle, absentmindedly scanned the menu. "Something filling."

Sakayanagi's eyes lit up as she spotted something intriguing. "I'll have the Radiant Flame Skewers. They sound like they'd match my power," she said with a small grin.

Shigan chuckled. "I'll take the Solarburst Steak."

Ren finally settled on a dish and placed his order. "I'll have the Luminous Rice Bowl. And for drinks…"

The server smiled again, pulling out a small notepad. "We have a variety of special drinks here in Light City. How about our famous Gleam Spark Elixir? It's a refreshing, citrusy drink that energizes your spirit."

"That sounds perfect," Sakayanagi said.

Ren nodded. "I'll try that too."

Shigan, ever the adventurous one, decided on something different. "I'll take the Sunshine Nectar. I could use something sweet after today."

As they waited for their food, the trio leaned back in their chairs, trying to shake off the stress of the day's events. The streets were alive with the vibrant energy of the city, people laughing, talking, and enjoying the warm glow of the Light City's eternal daylight.

"This place is so different from everywhere else we've been," Sakayanagi mused, watching the bustling streets. "It's like the city itself has energy."

Shigan nodded in agreement. "It's like the opposite of the Darkness City. Everything here feels… alive."

Ren, who had been silent for most of the conversation, finally spoke. "We'll be ready next time. I know it."

Sakayanagi glanced at him. "You're not doubting yourself, are you?"

Ren shook his head. "No. I'm just frustrated. We've trained so hard, and yet we still couldn't win."

"That's why we'll keep training," Shigan said firmly. "We're not done yet."

Their food and drinks arrived, and the trio dug in, savoring the flavors of the Light City's cuisine. The Radiant Flame Skewers were spicy and packed with flavor, perfectly suiting Sakayanagi's fiery personality. Shigan's Solarburst Steak was rich and hearty, while Ren's Luminous Rice Bowl was light and refreshing, just what he needed after such a tough day.

As they ate, they couldn't help but talk strategy, going over what had happened in the battle and what they could do differently next time. The sage's words echoed in their minds—there was more to training than just power.

After they finished their meal, Ren leaned back in his chair, feeling more at peace. "Maybe the sage is right. We need to focus on more than just fighting."

Sakayanagi wiped her mouth with a napkin, nodding. "We've come a long way, but we still have more to learn. And not just about our powers."

Shigan grinned, finishing off the last of his drink. "At least the food here is good. That's something."

They paid for their meal and continued to wander the city, taking in the sights and sounds. The bright architecture, the glowing buildings, and the constant feeling of energy in the air were a stark contrast to the darker places they had visited before.

As the day turned into evening, the trio found themselves standing at the edge of the city, looking out over the horizon. The Light Stone still waited for them, along with the Guardians who guarded it. But for now, they had time to reflect and prepare.

"We'll get stronger," Ren said softly, his eyes fixed on the distant castle. "Next time, we'll win."

Sakayanagi placed a hand on his shoulder. "And we'll be ready."

The sage's words lingered in their minds as they headed back to their temporary home in the city, the knowledge that they still had much to learn fueling their determination. They weren't done yet—not by a long shot.
