Chapter 22: Chakra Refinement

Chakra is a powerful energy produced by combining the physical energy from the body's 130 trillion cells with spiritual energy.  

It forms the foundation for over 90% of all ninjutsu.  

Refining chakra requires intense mental focus to locate the energy source within the body.  

Toneri had never formally refined chakra, but he had experienced its immense power firsthand—particularly the chakra of a Tailed Beast.  

Despite being laced with malevolence, the quality of the Tailed Beast's chakra was undeniably exceptional. This gave him a unique understanding of its nature.  

The method for refining chakra wasn't complex—it only took a few minutes to read from start to finish.  

However, fully understanding its intricacies took Toneri over an hour, as it detailed concepts like meridians, acupoints, and cellular energy.  

Refining chakra itself wasn't overly difficult. With consistent effort, most people could achieve it. The real challenge lay in increasing the amount of chakra after refinement. This required either extracting more energy from the body's cells or increasing one's spiritual energy.  

Thus, as one's body grew and matured, their total chakra often increased significantly.  

Thanks to his prior knowledge of meridians and acupoints, Toneri was able to grasp the material in an hour. Otherwise, it would have taken the average student at the Ninja Academy six months to comprehend.  

A door to a new world was slowly opening before him.  

After finishing *Chakra Refinement Basics*, Toneri didn't immediately attempt the technique.  

Instead, he browsed through the books and scrolls stacked on the table.

**"The Glorious Deeds of the Hokage,"**  

**"Beginner's Guide to Ninja Tools and Advanced Throwing Techniques,"**  

**"Basic Taijutsu Training Methods,"**  

**"The Three Basic Jutsu"** ...  

"Hmm, while Nara Shikaku clearly intends to bury me under a mountain of books to slow me down, I have to admit he's provided a lot of useful material.  

"But seriously, did he really need to include so many volumes of *The Will of Fire*?"  

Toneri flipped through the stack and realized that nearly half of the books were variations of *The Will of Fire.*  

"What is this, some attempt to cleanse my so-called *corrupted will* with a flood of philosophy?" he muttered sarcastically.  

Despite his complaints, he didn't discard the books. He understood how important this ideology was to the Third Hokage, Hiruzen Sarutobi, and knew it was essential for passing the Ninja Academy's curriculum.  

After organizing the books, Toneri devised a study plan for the days ahead.  

"Let's set aside the *spiritual sustenance* for now. Time to try refining chakra."  

Sitting on his bed, Toneri mentally reviewed the chakra refinement process and focused his mind.  

The technique didn't require a specific posture, but Toneri felt it deserved serious attention.  

He closed his eyes and concentrated, searching for the source of energy within his body.  

But intense concentration was exhausting.  

Within minutes, Toneri fell asleep.  

While his body rested, his consciousness drifted once again into the sealed space.

The dim, sealed realm had become a familiar place.  

Toneri no longer found its cold atmosphere unsettling; instead, it felt oddly comforting.  

The Two-Tails lay sprawled within its cage, its breathing calm and steady.  

Toneri walked to his usual spot near the markings on the ground, resting his chin on his hands as he gazed at the massive, motionless beast.  

Sometimes, he thought a quiet, peaceful existence like this wasn't so bad.  

If he could truly coexist with the Two-Tails, many of the dangers surrounding him would vanish.  

Still, he wondered how long it would take to achieve such harmony.  

At least for now, their relationship was steadily improving.  

Upon closer inspection, Toneri noticed that the Two-Tails hadn't changed much from when it was younger.  

"Staring at me again, little one?"  

The sudden voice startled Toneri. He hadn't realized the Two-Tails was awake.  

"Geez, you scared me! So, you weren't asleep, huh, Beautiful?" Toneri said with a grin.  

The Two-Tails stretched lazily, its two tails swaying back and forth inside the cage. Its body arched as it let out a long yawn, looking oddly content.  

"In a place like this, I can sleep whenever I want. But there's only so much sleep one can have," it said, settling back down.  

After a moment of hesitation, it asked, "Were you being quiet earlier because you thought I was asleep?"  

Toneri nodded honestly.  

"Hmm."  

The Two-Tails snorted, turning its gaze away.  

For some reason, when it met Toneri's straightforward gaze, a strange sensation stirred within its chest.  

A warmth it had never felt before.  

"Hey, Beautiful, guess what? Today, I finally got my hands on chakra refinement techniques, along with some basic ninjutsu and taijutsu training methods. If I work hard, our plan will soon become a reality!" Toneri exclaimed excitedly.  

In the world of shinobi, the difference between having chakra and not having it was monumental.  

"You still need to refine chakra? If it's chakra you want, I can give you as much as you need. There's no need for all this trouble," the Two-Tails replied, its powerful chakra rippling through the space as if to demonstrate.  

Toneri waved dismissively. "That's different, Beautiful. Like I've said before, only the strength I gain through my own effort truly belongs to me!"  

"Oh? So you're not interested in my power at all?"  

The Two-Tails let its chakra surge, raising the temperature of the sealed space.  

"It's not that I'm not interested," Toneri said seriously. "You know as well as I do that Tailed Beasts like you are coveted by many, and your power is crucial.  

"But interest is one thing, and acceptance is another.  

"The strength I seek is my own. When the day comes that you're truly willing to support me unconditionally, that's the day I'll accept your power.  

"You might not understand what I mean now, but I believe you'll understand someday.  

"Well, that's enough talk for today. I'm exhausted. I wonder if my chakra refinement worked."  

With that, Toneri stood, brushed himself off, and waved at the Two-Tails. "I've got training to do. Hopefully, I'll soon gain the strength to fulfill our promise.  

"And when that day comes, I hope we'll be great friends!"  

As Toneri's figure faded from the sealed space, the Two-Tails remained silent, its expression unreadable.  

"Friends?"  

The word echoed in its mind—a concept it had never experienced before.  

"Hmph. What an arrogant little brat."  

Yet, unconsciously, the corners of its mouth lifted into a small smile.

Back in the real world, Toneri didn't wake immediately. His consciousness sank into deep sleep while faint blue energy shimmered on his body's surface.  

These traces of energy seeped through his skin, merging with his meridians.  

Within his pathways, chakra began to form—weak at first but growing steadily, like a trickling stream transforming into a flowing river.  

Unbeknownst to him, Toneri's latent potential had begun to awaken, setting him on the path to greatness.
