Krystallos Chaos

Chapter 4: Arc 1: Part 3

Tea's POV

As we pulled into the driveway, my heart was racing. Everything had to be perfect, down to the last detail. If we even slightly messed up part of the plan, everything would be over. Our lives could be over completely. My worst suspicions were confirmed as I saw the black car pull into the driveway behind us. I slammed the door shut behind us, and we got ready. "Jefferson, you know what to do." I said, turning to him with a look of expectance.

"I literally have no idea what you're talking about." Jefferson replied. I couldn't tell if he was trying to test me, or if he just genuinely didn't know what to do.

"Quickly, pick up everything that we need, and start to make your way out the side window. The one from my room. Then, make your way through the back, and try to do as much damage to their car as you can. Just, whatever you can to make it not start. After that, try to start the car and get ready to drive away as fast as you can. I'll do what I can to stop them. If I'm not out in thirty minutes, then it was nice knowing you." I said in a slight panic. "Now hurry, do it!"

Jefferson understood the assignment. He ran faster than I've seen him move in a very long time. He grabbed everything else, and practically flew through the window. As he left, I was snapped back to reality by the sound of pounding on the door.

"This is the police. We have a warrant, open the door, or we'll open it ourselves." Said one of the men from behind the door.

I took a deep breath, closed my eyes, and pressed my hands to the door. In my mind's eye, I could see and feel every fiber of the wooden door. I could tell every step it went through to be at this one moment. Every shave, every carve, every dent. I could feel every molecule, every atom vibrating so faintly. I focused on rearranging them, even just slightly. Just a few atoms at first, moving slightly. Then I turned to changing the shape of them. Adding some ions here, taking some there. Eventually I could feel the door completely changing from its wooden shape to a metal block. It felt like an eternity to me, but it could only have taken around half a minute. I could hear the knocks on the door increasing now, with both of the officers screaming.

I couldn't even focus on what they were saying. My vision started to blur, and everything seemed fuzzy. I started to stumble for a moment, but I slapped myself in the face to wake up. I had to get away, and there were still people who wanted my head. I couldn't stop yet. I ran to my room, and tried to make very noticeable fresh footprints leading to it. I hid in the room next to it and waited.

I could feel myself starting to fade away. My limbs started to feel heavy, my eyelids began to close, as if every fiber in my body was rebelling against me. I couldn't pass out yet; if I do, then both Jefferson and I are going down. I bit myself on the lip, hoping that amount of pain would keep me going for just a little longer, just enough to get to my car. I could hear the banging on the door getting louder and louder. I could tell they were trying to break it down now. I bit my lip harder; I could taste blood now.

Suddenly, it felt like the world itself stood still. The only thing I could hear was one loud gunshot. Clever people. Instead of trying to bust it down they just shatter the latch. I heard the door slam open from my corner in the hallway. I heard the police run in, and it seemed like they stopped for a bit. I guess they were expecting an ambush as soon as they got in.

The silence drove me mad. In those few seconds, it felt like I had become hyper-aware of all of my surroundings. I could hear my heart pounding in my chest, every time I swallowed, my already shallow breaths. They all drove me mad wondering if it was as loud to them as it was to me. I finally heard their footsteps slowly approach the room I was trying to lead them to. When it finally sounded like they were far enough in the room, I practically flew out of my hiding place. I threw the door shut, and all I had the time/energy to do was force it locked, and try to reinforce the latch so they couldn't just shoot it open like the front door.

Then, I made a mad dash. I ran as fast as my legs could possibly carry me to the car, and didn't even bother to look back. I ripped open the car door and slammed it behind me with my last bit of adrenaline-powered energy.

"DRIVE NOW!" I screamed at Jefferson. He took the cue. I could hear the tires squealing, and we both screamed "We did it! We're actually free!"

"Jefferson, you know where to drive, right?" I asked wearily.

"Yeah, sorta. I know who we're trying to see, but not exactly where that is." He replied.

"I think I wrote it down somewhere, can you check the glove compartment? There should be some directions." I said.

"Oh here it is, but what does it mean?" Jefferson questioned.

"You'll know it when you see it." I said. I vaguely heard Jefferson mumbling to himself about how little help I was.

And then, it all faded to black.
