Chapter 44: Surpassed by the present
Elias looked through the sniper scope, aiming for the Frost Queen. His fingers rested on the trigger. With the dense frost storm, his sight wasn't clear. Lilian was also moving a lot while killing his clones, which made it harder to aim.
Every few seconds, Elias had to readjust the rifle. And every time he did, it became useless again as the Frost Queen moved.
He tried to keep his emotions in control, to not grow impatient. Even the most perfect weapon was useless if the person using it wasn't good enough. He didn't want to miss the target because of his impatience.
He adjusted the aim again. This time, he didn't aim directly at her. Instead, he aimed for an empty space near her, as if predicting her next movement based on her recent movements and the presence of his remaining clones.
Once he settled down, he took a deep breath and started waiting for the right time.
In another part of the world, Rey had discovered another Ranker. Even if the Ranker had tried to run, he couldn't outrun the person whose class itself allowed him to rule over winds.
"I really hoped that it would be him. It looks like he is quite lucky." He created a sphere of condensed flames and tossed it. The flaming sphere struck the legs of the running Domain Lord, making him fall down, groaning in pain.
"Let me go! I haven't done anything to you!" the boy screamed at the top of his lungs as he tried to stop the fire that was burning his legs and spreading upwards.
Unfortunately, the flame didn't stop. Even as he rolled on the snow, the flames didn't disappear. Only the pain of burning became stronger.
"Oh, believe me, I really wished it wasn't an insignificant person like you," Rey landed before the boy, who was screaming in pain like a mad person.
"Unfortunately, the test will end after one more death. If I don't kill you, and the one at the second rank kills the tenth person, I might lose the top rank. Hence, you must die!"
He gathered another sphere of condensed flames, wrapping it in dense winds to make it even more lethal. He aimed it at the boy, and released it.
"Now!" Elias pulled the trigger the moment Lilian stepped into his view. Lightning flickered around his sniper rifle as a golden bullet shot out, leaving a trail of lightning in its wake.
The bullet traveled through space at a speed many times faster than a normal bullet. Even the snow that neared the bullet evaporated into nothingness as the bullet entered the ice storm like a spear tossed straight from heaven.
At the same time, Lilian killed the last clone, turning it into a sculpture of ice. She tapped the ice sculpture gently. Cracks spread across the ice sculpture, and the last clone shattered into thousands of pieces.
"How long are you going to hide behind these useless clones?" she roared like a wounded beast, the storm around her growing even denser. "If you want to kill me, then come yourself!"
She continued, "I hated your brother, but at least he wasn't a cowar-"
Swish!
Her pupils trembled as she watched a golden bullet flying away from her. She lowered her gaze and looked at her chest, which had a small hole right where her heart was supposed to be.
"Is that... blood?" she mumbled, her trembling hands touched her chest. She couldn't even remember the last time she had bled.
She tried to freeze her wound, but it was too little too late. The bullet passed through her heart, something that could not be treated by just freezing it.
She knew that she had to return! Only at the Academy could she be treated. She opened the portal to return to the Academy, but as she tried to move, she felt an electric current coursing through her body.
"Arghh!" She roared, but this time it wasn't the roar of anger like before. It was pure pain as lightning spread throughout her body, destroying it from the inside.
Beep.... Beep... Beep...
Elias was focused on Lilian, and didn't care about the constantly beeping sound on his watch. He didn't even know when it had appeared. His finger again moved on the trigger and another bullet shot out.
The portal was opened in front of Seraphina, connecting to the Medical Facility of the Academy. The elf-like professor who had healed Elias previously, looked at the portal, wondering who was arriving.
She waited for a few seconds, but no one stepped through the Portal. She grew curious, even worried that something bad might have happened to the person who opened this portal, especially since no one connected to this place for no reason.
If they weren't stepping through the portal, did it mean they were seriously injured? She was worried.
"Prepare for an emergency!" She commanded the other staff at the medical facility before rushing through the portal to check herself.
The moment she stepped out of the portal, she was left stunned. In front of her was Frost Queen Lilian. She was bleeding, and her pupils were trembling in fear.
"H...elp..." Lilian struggled to utter a single word, as her body refused to listen to her.
"Who did this to you?" Seraphina asked as she rushed to help Lilian. However, before she could even touch Lilian, she saw a golden light flash before his eyes, disappearing as fast as it appeared.
At the same moment, blood splashed on her face. Her face was filled with horror, as she looked at Lilian who now had a hole right through her skull.
Horrified, she stepped back, worried that she might have entered a battlefield. At this point, she was worried about her own life, and ran back through the portal, her heart racing in fear.
Beep... Beep... Beep...
The beeping sound drew closer to Lilian as she fell on the ground. She could hear the footsteps of someone approaching, but she couldn't see anything. The constantly beeping sound felt so familiar, as if it was mocking her.
It looked like the past had repeated itself. No... It was surpassed by the present in some ways.
