Chapter 50: Sentencing the World to Death
All the rankers who had survived were brought back. They didn't even have time to be relieved about their return before they saw the condition of their surroundings.
The cliff had been flattened, and there were signs that a battle had taken place there. There were also some traces of blood on the snow that had just started to melt.
When they saw this sight, and thought about the person who had suddenly climbed to the top rank, they could already guess a few things.
Their thoughts were further verified when they saw another Professor there, with Lilian nowhere to be seen.
"Where is Professor Lilian?" Rey asked the man. Even if all the evidence pointed toward the same thing, he still didn't want to believe it. How could Elias kill a Professor? Even he wasn't capable of doing that!
"I have good news for you, and bad news. Which one do you want to hear first?" the Professor asked Rey, who was really hoping that he was simply overthinking.
Did Lilian have something else to do, which made her leave early? At least that's what he wanted the situation to be like.
"Bad news," he told the Professor. If that good news was what he was thinking about, then there was no significance of any good news for him.
"The bad news is that your Professor Lilian, is dead. Which means all the effort that you went through to get the top rank, is useless now." the man said, as if he could already see that Rey was the second ranked in this test.
Hearing those words, Rey felt like someone had pulled the ground from beneath his feets. He was thinking that this was a bug that Elias took the top rank, but it became clear that it wasn't a bug. Lilian was really dead.
He looked at Elias, his pupils trembling. He thought he was going to kill Elias and wash the embarrassment that he suffered, but he seemed to have become even stronger, and more dangerous.
If Elias could kill a Professor, then couldn't he also kill him? He had already established an enmity with Elias, and there was also the enmity between their families.
He could feel a red target being painted behind his back. He never thought he was going to feel the same fear again, but here he was.
He wasn't alone who was feeling this way. Even the Descendants of other major families were feeling threatened.
"What's the good news?" Rey asked, holding his hands behind his back to prevent anyone from seeing his trembling hands.
"The good news is that I'm your new Professor!" The man spread out his arms, like he was revealing some grand news. "Aren't you excited?"
Almost everyone looked at him blankly, not understanding why they would be excited over getting a new Professor when they didn't even get to know their old one. They were still trying to come to terms with the revaluation about Elias.
"Aww, you're so excited that you can't even say anything. Don't worry. We will get a lot of time in the future," he said, as if he didn't have any awareness about the true thoughts of the children.
"After all, I'm not going to die anytime soon," he further added, subtly glancing at Elias. His face carried an innocent smile, but something about his words felt like a warning.
"If Professor Lilian can be killed, what makes you certain that you can't be killed?" a girl voiced out her opinions, raising her hand.
"Huh? Is that supposed to be a question?" The man tilted his head sideways in confusion. "Isn't it because I'm not as trash as her? She was the weakest of the Professors, after all."
"Anyways, that's enough talking. We are already running late. We need to return to the Academy, as this world has already been assigned to someone." He snapped his fingers, opening a returning portal. "I also have to give you the rewards."
"What do you mean this world has been assigned to someone? Are those from the Creator Class also going to take the same test?" the same girl raised her hands, asking another question.
"Those twats from the Creator Class?" The man burst into laughter. "It's not them. They have already been taken to the Beast Realm to pick a soul beast. This world is assigned to your Senior from the Destroyer Class for her practical exams."
The man didn't seem like he was going to explain any further, but his words were enough to make Elias flinch. It was the second time he was hearing about the Practicals of the Destroyer Class.
His sharp reaction didn't go unnoticed by the man, who was slightly amused. "Don't tell me you really thought you saved this world? All you did was sentence this world to a different and maybe crueler death."
"Anyways, that has nothing to do with us. We are returning." He waved his hands, and all the students flew straight to the portal, their bodies not being in their control. Even Elias was the same, as he was pulled inside the portal.
Right before he entered the portal, he looked at the bright sky. It was true that the world was going to be destroyed, no matter what he did. There were some things that couldn't be changed.
The only thing he achieved was to take the top rank. There was no other significance behind his actions, and that reality was just setting in.
Elten, Aliath, Freya, Lilian.... This world was truly for the strong. Everyone else was simply a pawn, dancing to their tunes, being foolishly led to believe that they could break out of the mould.
The only way to gain control of one's fate, was to become an existence that was untouchable, even for someone like Freya.
The people of the frost world were celebrating getting a new lease on life, unaware that this was not the end, but the beginning of their true nightmare that would have made them beg for return to the time of the Frost Apocalypse.
