Chapter 217: The Truth of the Case and the Interrogation
Upon investigation, Mona discovered that before assassin Francisco Ford went to silence Earley Louis, a sudden deposit appeared in a certain bank account, and a call was made to his phone using a one-time phone.
The caller also used a disposable phone, but thanks to the electronic serial number, Mona was able to trace the location from which the call was made.
However, she then encountered classified documents from the Federal Department of Homeland Security and wasn't able to continue her investigation.
"How's it looking, Luo An?"
Mona had not yet hacked into the internal network of the Department of Homeland Security. Now she was itching to try, her face flush with excitement:
"Trust me, I can definitely obtain the relevant data without alerting the Department of Homeland Security!"
Luo An: "..."
Mona's proposal was ultimately not approved because Vireness entered the office area of Investigation Team No. 5.
Upon hearing that it involved matters from the Department of Homeland Security, Vireness did not hesitate to take out her phone and make a call.
After more than half an hour, a white middle-aged man with a big beard, carrying several folders, walked in.
"Allow me to introduce."
Vireness stood at the forefront of the office area and introduced with an indifferent face:
"This is Linden Jones, a department head of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement bureau under the Department of Homeland Security."
"Good day, Chief Linden!"
"Hello to all."
Luo An greeted Linden on behalf of the agents from Investigation Team No. 5, and Linden waved his hand, smiling as he reached out to Luo An:
"So you are Deputy Group Leader Greenwood, quite young, aren't you!"
Looking at the young and handsome Luo An, Linden felt a pang in his heart.
Linden's son, about the same age as Luo An, was still aimless in society, and Linden found himself having to clean up his son's mess every so often. The very thought was headache-inducing.
Then there was Luo An, young yet already a deputy group leader, and the high case-solving rate of Investigation Team No. 5… Linden resolved to have a serious talk with his son later.
"Just call me Luo An."
Luo An chuckled and shook hands with him, unaware that his actions would lead to a young man getting a beating in a few days.
Seeing the envy in Linden's eyes, Vireness maintained her dignity without changing her facial expression, but inwardly she felt quite proud, casting a subtle glance at Luo An.
After briefly exchanging pleasantries, Linden got to the point and distributed the folders to everyone, explaining:
"This guy is Bevin Haiman."
In the folder was a middle-aged white man in a suit, all smiles.
Bevin Haiman, the owner of a large building materials company in New York, had reported annual revenues of around Thirty Million Dollars for the past few years.
Seeing the contents in the folder, Reesi frowned and speculated:
"Does Chief Linden mean that this Bevin Haiman is actually affiliated with the 'Black Mamba-7'?"
"No, I don't think so."
Luo An shook his head, pointing to the ownership structure chart of the building materials company in the folder:
"A building materials company with shares in S corporations, LLCs, limited partnerships, and offshore partners in Panama and the Cayman Islands… This is clearly the organizational structure of a money-laundering company!"
"That's correct!"
After hearing Luo An's analysis, Linden clicked his tongue and took a long look at Luo An, worthy of someone who became deputy group leader at 25.
Sighing inwardly again, Linden continued:
"Bevin Haiman is closely associated with the headquarters of 'Black Mamba-7.' His building materials company is not only suspected of laundering money for the criminal organization, but since its raw materials come from Brazil, located in South America, the company is also suspected of aiding illegal immigration and human trafficking."
Black Mamba-7's operations also include human trafficking, even trafficking human organs.
Just then, William suddenly raised his hand, indicating that after computer research, their tech agents found that Earley's phone had received calls from Bevin Haiman prior to the deaths of Angelique and the gardener.
Luo An raised his eyebrows, turned around, and began writing and drawing on the whiteboard; the case's true nature was coming to light.
A major characteristic of federal crime organizations is that "everyone answers to someone."
Bevin Haiman didn't want to leave any loopholes in his years of operation, so after ordering Earley Louis, the leader of the New York Branch and a loner, to kill Angelique, he sent someone to take out Earley Louis and silence him to end the investigation of this case.
"But"
After reading through the case analysis on the whiteboard at the very front of the office area, Reesi frowned slightly:
"All we have now is a phone number that had been in contact with the assassin, Francisco Ford.
With just this, I'm afraid we might not be able to completely take down Bevin Haiman; he has the means to spend money on a lawyer to argue that it wasn't him who made the call, but his secretary or someone else."
Vireness's face changed slightly, turning her gaze to Linden Jones beside her.
"Sorry."
Linden shrugged and closed the file in his hand:
"Our Immigration and Customs Enforcement hasn't found any direct evidence that could definitively nail Bevin Haiman either."
Otherwise, the Department of Homeland Security would have taken action against Bevin Haiman already.
Hearing this, Vireness's face suddenly darkened.
Was this case going to be forced to a close just as they were uncovering the details?
Although their Task Force No. 5 had already caught the murderer who killed Angelique, they were far from content.
"Don't worry, Chief."
Seeing that the faces of everyone present didn't look too good, Luo An chuckled, poured two cups of coffee, and handed them to Linden and Vireness, laughing:
"Don't forget, we still have Earley Louis.
The assassin-turned Earley must always be vigilant and have some aces up his sleeve, otherwise, he wouldn't have been able to kill Francisco.
And Earley, accustomed to holding aces, must have something we need in his hands after sitting as the head of the New York Branch for so long."
After hearing Luo An's words, all the agents of Task Force No. 5's eyes lit up; Vireness also slightly raised the corner of her mouth and contentedly tapped her forehead, while Group Leader Linden smacked his lips... deciding to have a good chat with his son tonight.
Group Leader Linden's son: "..."
————
The following day, Task Force No. 5, interrogation room.
Earley Louis was currently tightly handcuffed to the interrogation table, with his thigh, which had been shot, still wrapped in several layers of white bandages.
Luo An and Reesi were in charge of the interrogation, while Vireness, Linden, Augustus, Mona, and others all sat together in the adjoining monitoring room.
Before entering the interrogation room, Luo An whispered into Reesi's ear:
"Do this, do that, OK?"
"Uh..."
After listening to Luo An's words, Reesi was filled with a string of question marks but still nodded in agreement.
Because of Luo An's successful arrest of Earley at Coney Island previously, now even if Luo An said he was a woman, Reesi wouldn't doubt him and would just nod.
Luo An: "..."
"Good morning, Mr. Louis."
Walking into the interrogation room, Luo An picked up a coffee and sipped lightly, saying with a faint smile:
"It seems you're recovering well."
"Despicable attacker!"
Seeing Luo An in front of him, who lied through his eyes and shot him, Earley's face was pale, the pain from the bullet wound in his leg making him even more enraged, he shouted loudly:
"What are you trying to pull now?"
"Relax, Mr. Louis, it's just necessary procedure."
Ignoring the big hat the other party was trying to put on him, Luo An chuckled and said:
"Besides, I wanted to chat with you, like imagining with you what your life in prison might look like for the second half of your life."
Earley's mouth twitched, and he grew even angrier.
