Chapter 8: Chapter 8: Shadows of the Past
The silence of the forest felt different now, heavier. Every rustle of leaves or snap of a twig put Hu Jun on edge. Alone, with Reyna's betrayal fresh in his mind, the weight of his mission bore down on him harder than ever. The Sanctum of Echoes lay ahead, but so did countless unanswered questions about who he was—and who he could trust.
The map guided him to a dense part of the forest where the canopy was so thick that sunlight barely filtered through. Shadows moved unnaturally here, and the air seemed colder with every step. Hu Jun's grip on the map tightened as he moved cautiously, his senses on high alert.
It wasn't long before he came upon an ancient stone archway, partially swallowed by vines and moss. The symbols carved into the weathered stone were unfamiliar, yet something about them stirred a sense of recognition deep within him. The archway seemed to hum faintly, an energy resonating just beneath its surface.
Hu Jun hesitated, remembering the Keeper's warning about traps and illusions. He reached out tentatively, his fingers brushing against the cold stone. As he did, the air around him shifted, and the hum grew louder.
"Who dares disturb the sanctity of this place?" a deep voice boomed.
Hu Jun jumped back, drawing his blade instinctively. Before him, a figure materialized from the shadows, cloaked in flowing black robes. Their face was hidden beneath a hood, but glowing amber eyes pierced through the darkness.
"I seek the Sanctum of Echoes," Hu Jun said, his voice steady despite the tension in his body.
"You carry the blood of the Betrayer," the figure replied, its tone sharp and accusatory. "Why should the sanctum open its doors to you?"
Hu Jun's chest tightened. "I didn't choose this bloodline," he said firmly. "But I have a right to know the truth about it. About why everyone thinks I'm a danger."
The figure seemed to study him, though its expression remained obscured. After a long pause, it gestured toward the archway. The air shimmered, and the vines receded, revealing a glowing portal within the stone frame.
"Enter," the figure said. "But beware: the Sanctum reveals not just truth, but also the darkness within you. Few emerge unchanged."
Hu Jun hesitated for only a moment before stepping forward. He had come too far to turn back now.
The world shifted as he passed through the portal. The air was cool and still, and the space around him seemed infinite, like a void stretching in all directions. Floating before him was a massive mirror, its surface rippling like water. As Hu Jun approached, his reflection stared back at him—but it wasn't quite right.
The figure in the mirror wore his face but stood taller, more imposing. Its eyes burned with an unnatural red light, and a cruel smile played on its lips. The reflection stepped forward, out of the mirror, and solidified before him.
"Who are you?" Hu Jun demanded, gripping his sword tightly.
The doppelganger laughed, a cold, hollow sound. "I am you," it said. "The part of you that you fear. The part that craves power, that would embrace the legacy of the Betrayer rather than run from it."
"I don't want that legacy," Hu Jun shot back. "I just want to end this cycle."
"Lies," the reflection sneered. "You feel it, don't you? The power coursing through your veins. You've tasted it. You can't deny that part of you hungers for more."
Hu Jun's grip faltered for a moment, the words cutting deeper than any blade. The reflection saw his hesitation and advanced.
"You've already been betrayed," it said. "And you will be again. Trusting others is your weakness. Embrace the power within, and you won't need anyone. You'll be unstoppable."
"No," Hu Jun said through gritted teeth. "That's not who I am."
The reflection's smile widened. "Prove it."
The doppelganger lunged, its movements a blur. Hu Jun barely had time to react, parrying the first strike and countering with one of his own. The clash of blades echoed in the void, each strike sending shockwaves through the space around them.
The battle was unlike anything Hu Jun had faced before. The reflection matched him move for move, anticipating his every attack. It was as if he were fighting a shadow of himself, one that knew all his strengths and exploited his weaknesses.
But as the fight wore on, Hu Jun began to notice something. The reflection's attacks grew more aggressive, more desperate. It wasn't just mirroring him—it was feeding off his doubt.
"You're not real," Hu Jun said, his voice steady despite the sweat dripping down his face. "You're just a manifestation of my fears."
The reflection hesitated, its glowing eyes narrowing. "I am as real as the darkness within you," it hissed.
"Maybe," Hu Jun replied. "But that doesn't mean I have to let you control me."
With a surge of determination, Hu Jun channeled every ounce of strength he had left. He feinted to the left, then struck with all his might. His blade pierced the reflection's chest, and it let out a deafening scream as it dissolved into shadows.
The void around him began to shift, the mirror shattering into fragments of light. Hu Jun fell to his knees, gasping for breath. When he looked up, the portal was before him once more, glowing softly.
He stepped through, emerging back into the forest. The figure in black was gone, and the archway stood silent and still.
Hu Jun looked down at his hands, trembling but resolute. The Sanctum had shown him the darkness within, but it had also shown him that he had the strength to resist it.
As he continued his journey, the map leading him ever closer to his destiny, he couldn't help but wonder: would the world see him as a hero, or as the next Betrayer?
The shadows of the past still clung to him, but Hu Jun walked forward, determined to carve his own path—no matter what it cost.
