Chapter 60: The First Shadow had allies now
The journey back to the summoners' hideout was uneventful, but Julius couldn't shake the feeling of unease that had settled in his chest. The artifact—the small, ornate box—felt heavier with every step, as if it were alive and aware of its new owner. The shadows around him seemed to pulse in rhythm with his heartbeat, a constant reminder of the power he now wielded.
When he finally arrived at the hideout, the atmosphere was tense. The hooded figures were waiting for him, their silver masks glinting in the dim light. The leader stepped forward, his eyes narrowing as he saw the box in Julius's hands.
"You succeeded," the leader said, his voice devoid of emotion.
Julius nodded, holding out the box. "As promised."
The leader took the box, his fingers brushing against Julius's for the briefest of moments. A shiver ran down Julius's spine, but he kept his expression neutral.
The leader turned to the others, holding the box aloft. "The First Shadow has proven his worth. The artifact is ours."
A murmur of approval passed through the group, but Julius noticed something—**a flicker of hesitation in some of their eyes.** They were wary of him. And perhaps, they had every reason to be.
The leader turned back to Julius. "You have done well. But this is only the beginning. The artifact is but a piece of a larger puzzle."
Julius tilted his head slightly. "And what is the next piece?"
The leader's lips curled into a faint smile. "Patience, First Shadow. All will be revealed in time."
Julius didn't like the sound of that. He had played his part, but he was still being kept in the dark. **He needed answers.**
As the group dispersed, Julius found himself alone in the grand hall once more. The shadows around him seemed to whisper, their voices faint but insistent. He closed his eyes, focusing on the energy within him.
**"What are you trying to tell me?"** he thought, his mind reaching out to the shadows.
But before he could get an answer, a voice interrupted his thoughts.
"You've made quite the impression."
Julius turned to see the sharp-featured woman who had guided him to the temple. Her green eyes were studying him carefully, as if trying to decipher a puzzle.
"Have I?" Julius replied, his tone neutral.
She nodded. "The leader doesn't trust easily. And yet, he's given you a seat at the table. That's no small feat."
Julius arched an eyebrow. "And what about you? Do you trust me?"
She smiled faintly. "Trust is a luxury in this world. But I will say this—you're different. And that makes you dangerous."
Julius didn't respond immediately. He knew she was testing him, trying to gauge his intentions. But he also knew that she could be a valuable ally—or a dangerous enemy.
"What's your name?" he asked finally.
She hesitated for a moment before answering. "Lilith."
Julius nodded. "Well, Lilith, if trust is a luxury, then perhaps we can start with mutual respect."
She studied him for a long moment before nodding. "Perhaps."
As she turned to leave, Julius called out to her. "One more thing."
She paused, glancing back at him.
"The artifact," Julius said, his voice low. "What is it really for?"
Lilith's expression darkened. "That's not my place to say. But if I were you, I'd be careful. The leader has his own agenda, and it doesn't always align with the rest of us."
With that, she disappeared into the shadows, leaving Julius alone with his thoughts.
He exhaled slowly, his mind racing. The artifact, the leader's agenda, the whispers of the shadows—**it was all connected.** But how?
As he stood there, the shadows around him seemed to grow darker, more oppressive. He could feel their presence pressing in on him, urging him to act.
**"Not yet,"** he thought, his jaw tightening. **"I need to know more."**
But deep down, he knew that time was running out. The game was escalating, and he needed to stay one step ahead.
The First Shadow had taken his first step. But the path ahead was shrouded in darkness, and the price of power was higher than he had ever imagined.

The days following Julius's return from the temple were filled with a tense silence. The summoners went about their business, but Julius could feel their eyes on him, watching, waiting. The artifact he had retrieved was kept under heavy guard, its presence a constant reminder of the power it held.
But Julius wasn't content to sit idle. He needed answers, and he wasn't going to get them by playing the obedient servant.
Late one night, when the hideout was shrouded in darkness, Julius slipped out of his quarters. The shadows clung to him like a second skin, masking his movements as he made his way through the labyrinthine corridors. His destination was the leader's private chamber, where he hoped to find some clue about the artifact's true purpose.
As he approached the chamber, he noticed something unusual—**the door was slightly ajar.** He paused, his senses on high alert. This was too easy. The leader was many things, but careless wasn't one of them.
Julius hesitated for a moment before pushing the door open and stepping inside.
The chamber was dimly lit, the air thick with the scent of incense. Shelves lined the walls, filled with ancient tomes and strange artifacts. At the center of the room was a large, ornate desk, its surface cluttered with scrolls and maps.
Julius moved silently, his eyes scanning the room for anything that might give him the answers he sought. But as he approached the desk, a voice broke the silence.
"Looking for something?"
Julius froze, his hand instinctively reaching for the shadows. He turned slowly to see Lilith standing in the doorway, her arms crossed and a faint smile on her lips.
"You're not very subtle, are you?" she said, stepping into the room.
Julius relaxed slightly, but his guard remained up. "I could say the same about you. Following me?"
Lilith shrugged. "Let's just say I was curious. You've been... restless lately."
Julius studied her for a moment before responding. "I need answers. The leader isn't exactly forthcoming."
Lilith's smile faded, replaced by a more serious expression. "And you think you'll find them here?"
"I have to start somewhere."
Lilith sighed, glancing around the room. "You're playing a dangerous game, First Shadow. The leader doesn't take kindly to those who pry into his affairs."
Julius took a step closer, his voice low. "Then why are you here? If you're so concerned about the leader's wrath, why risk helping me?"
Lilith met his gaze, her green eyes piercing. "Because I'm curious too. And because I think you might be the key to unraveling the truth."
Julius raised an eyebrow. "The truth?"
Lilith hesitated, as if weighing her words carefully. "The artifact you retrieved—it's not just a relic. It's a key. A key to something much larger. Something the leader has been searching for a long time."
Julius's mind raced. "What is it?"
Lilith shook her head. "I don't know all the details. But I do know this—the leader's plans go beyond what he's told us. And if we're not careful, we'll all be caught in the crossfire."
Julius absorbed her words, his thoughts swirling. The leader's agenda, the artifact, the whispers of the shadows—**it was all connected.** But how?
Before he could press Lilith further, a noise from the corridor outside made them both freeze.
"Someone's coming," Lilith whispered, her eyes wide.
Julius nodded, his mind racing. They needed to get out of here, and fast.
"Follow me," Lilith said, grabbing his arm and pulling him toward a hidden door in the wall. They slipped through just as the main door to the chamber opened.
The hidden passage was narrow and dark, the air thick with dust. Lilith led the way, her movements swift and sure. Julius followed closely, his senses on high alert.
After what felt like an eternity, they emerged into a small, secluded courtyard. The moon hung low in the sky, casting a pale light over the scene.
Lilith turned to Julius, her expression serious. "You need to be careful. The leader is watching you. And if he finds out what you're up to..."
Julius nodded. "I know. But I can't just sit back and wait for him to make his move."
Lilith studied him for a long moment before nodding. "Then let's work together. But remember—trust is a luxury we can't afford."
Julius extended his hand. "Deal."
Lilith hesitated for a moment before shaking his hand. "Deal."
As they stood there in the moonlight, Julius couldn't shake the feeling that he had just taken a step into a much larger game. The shadows around him seemed to pulse with anticipation, as if they too were waiting for what was to come.
The First Shadow had allies now. But in a world of secrets and lies, alliances were fragile things.
And the price of power was higher than ever.
