Chapter 43: Chapter 43: Choice

[Emergency Mission: Become the Son of Yhwach.]

[Reward: Gain the power of the Quincy.]

[Main Quest: All traitors will be killed.]

[Defeat the Gotei 13, wipe out the Soul Society, and attack the Soul King Palace. Together with Yhwach, create a world without death and true 'peace'.]

[Reward: ???]

As Yhwach extended his offer to Araki, the system within Araki's mind roared to life, displaying lines of mission data.

The system panel was not a static entity; it was an adaptive tool, offering Araki the most relevant assistance based on his choices and the unfolding situation. The ultimate decision, however, always rested with Araki himself.

For a moment, two opposing paths lay before him: one as a Shinigami, the other as a Quincy.

"Do I even need to choose?!" Araki muttered, his eyes twitching as he scanned the mission prompts.

The question wasn't about choosing a side but about aligning with his own immediate interests. As for the prerequisite of becoming a Quincy—being Yhwach's son—Araki found it utterly unacceptable.

He thought of other fictional father figures. Whitebeard, for instance, had given everything for his son, even sacrificing himself. But Yhwach? He treated his own "children" as tools, readily sacrificing them with his "Auswählen" whenever they were no longer useful.

Both were fathers, but one was devoted to his sons, while the other demanded complete devotion, justifying it with the twisted mantra of "all for true peace! My children are not 'dead'; they merely become the cornerstones of the path to 'peace'."

"Stop your pathetic charade." Araki slashed his Zanpakuto, Ruriko, and cleaved Yhwach's horse in two.

"You're too impatient, child," Yhwach said calmly as the horse fell. He leaped gracefully to the ground, his black cloak swirling around him to reveal the white Quincy attire beneath.

He placed a hand on the hilt of his sword, his gaze fixed on Araki. "I had hoped to take advantage of the Shinigami's distraction and have a proper discussion. But it seems I must first subdue you by force."

"Your Majesty! Allow me." A young man wearing a white military cap stepped forward, drawing his own sword before Yhwach could. He had been standing guard beside Yhwach.

"Hm? Hubert?" Yhwach frowned slightly, a flicker of displeasure crossing his face.

"Very well," Yhwach said, retracting his hand from his sword. "Since you are so eager, he is yours."

"Thank you, Your Majesty, for this honor," Hubert said, drawing his sword and advancing towards Araki.

"You ungrateful bastard!" Hubert snarled. "I am Hubert, Vice Captain of the Sternritter. I will be your opponent."

"You will pay dearly for rejecting His Majesty Yhwach's kindness and for slaying his horse." Hubert raised his cross-shaped sword, his face contorted in anger.

"You say I'll pay soon?" Araki said calmly. "If I recall correctly,'soon' implies something that has not yet occurred, correct?"

"So, are you a 'prophet'? Can you foresee a future even beyond your Quincy Emperor, Yhwach?" Araki questioned.

"Uh?!" Hubert's confident expression faltered. He turned abruptly to Yhwach, a look of panic in his eyes. "Your Majesty! Please do not listen to this man's nonsense. I did not mean what he implied! Everyone knows that you alone possess the power to see the future."

Puff…

As Hubert desperately tried to explain himself to Yhwach, a flash of cold steel pierced his chest. Araki, his face expressionless, had stabbed him from behind.

"Foolish fellow." Araki said, his voice reaching Hubert's ears as he withdrew his blade. "To turn your back on an enemy on the battlefield is suicide."

"Gah…" Hubert felt a searing pain in his chest. His head lowered slowly, his gaze falling upon the blood-soaked blade protruding from his body. Blood gushed from his mouth.

"You... you dare... sneak attack me, you bastard? You'll pay!" Hubert gasped, gritting his teeth. He attempted to activate a Quincy technique, likely Vollständig, even in his dying moments.

Swish!

Before Hubert could complete his transformation, Araki's zanpakuto flashed again, this time in a diagonal slash that split Hubert's upper body in two.

"Gah…" Hubert's upper body, from his chest to his head, was cleaved apart. His lifeless body slumped to the ground.

"Look," Araki said, his voice flat, his gaze fixed on Hubert's remains. "You were speaking of the future again... in His Majesty's presence."

"Hmm?"

The moment Araki killed Hubert, he felt a sudden chill and instinctively leaped back.

Whoosh!

Several arrows of pure Reishi rained down on the spot where Araki had just stood.

Boom!

The arrows exploded, obliterating what remained of Hubert's body.

"Tch," Araki clicked his tongue, watching the explosion before turning his gaze to the archer.

"Foolish fool! You dare interrupt my conversation and speak of the future before me. You deserve to die; this is the consequence of acting without my permission." Yhwach said, his voice devoid of emotion. He showed no remorse for Hubert's death.

He glanced at the scorched earth where Hubert's body had been before turning his attention back to Araki. "Very well, Araki. You have made your point. Now, become my son! You shall take Hubert's place as Vice-Captain of the Sternritter."

"Araki, I believe a man of your intelligence will make the right choice. You should know that I advocate for 'freedom' and 'peace,' and I abhor violence. Dominating through force is not my desire. But if you persist in your defiance, I will be left with no choice but to resort to the very violence I despise." Yhwach drew his cross-shaped Quincy sword.

"Intimidate, Yakushi Ruriko!" Araki countered, releasing his shikai. Unlike the previous command, "Shine, Yakushi Ruriko," this time he used a different release phrase.

Like Kisuke Urahara's Benihime, Ruriko had multiple release commands, each with a different effect.

As Ruriko was released, a violent, shimmering light filled the area. Countless rays of light transformed into arrows, swirling around Araki before launching towards Yhwach.

"Hmph, futile." Yhwach scoffed, casually deflecting the barrage of light arrows.

While the attack posed no real threat, the fact that Araki, a wielder of Quincy-like power, dared to attack him, the Quincy Emperor, with arrows was a blatant insult.

"It seems you have made your choice," Yhwach's expression hardened. In a blur of movement, he vanished, reappearing before Araki with his sword raised.
