Chapter 69: Chapter 81 - Cruel Satisfaction
"This feeling is incredible. No restraints. I can do whatever I want!"
Tony Stark's eyes glowed with an unnatural blue as he spoke with manic enthusiasm. "I'm going to destroy all the suits. This world only needs one Iron Man. All the others? Scrap metal! Why would I need so many suits anyway?"
Standing nearby, Coulson rolled his eyes and muttered, "Tony, you're really not selling this whole 'controlled puppet' thing very well."
"I like that," Loki said, laughing as he watched the scene unfold. With a flick of the scepter, he turned Rumlow into another puppet, his eyes now glowing the same ominous blue. Loki smirked, pointing at the two men. "You two, equip yourselves with whatever suits or weapons you can find. Then destroy this place as you see fit. I want the helicarrier to crash into the ocean!"
Tony and Rumlow responded in unison, their voices eerily devoid of emotion. "No problem!"
After the two left, Coulson turned to Loki and asked, "So, are we heading out now?"
"Not yet," Loki replied, pacing slightly. "The fun is just beginning. I've got someone to wait for. You, however, can go ahead to the fighter and get ready."
"Got it," Coulson said, nodding before heading out. As he walked, he casually took out his phone and barked an order, "Begin the operation. Grab the girl." Hanging up, he smirked to himself, savoring his newfound freedom.
In one of the lower levels of the helicarrier, Natasha Romanoff struggled to free herself from beneath a heavy steel pipe pinning her legs. Her arms trembled as she tried to push it off. Suddenly, a loud, guttural gasp echoed through the space. Startled, Natasha turned her head sharply to see Dr. Banner in visible agony, his body trembling as he gripped a nearby railing.
"Dr. Banner!" she shouted. "Use the controller to stabilize yourself!"
"It's no use!" Banner roared, his voice thick with strain. "Maverick's blood isn't working anymore! Natasha, get out of here! Hulk is about to emerge!"
Natasha's face paled. "No! Don't let him out!"
Her words came too late. With a deafening roar, Banner's form expanded and transformed into the Hulk, who stood towering over her. Natasha froze in terror as Hulk stalked toward her, eyes blazing with primal rage. She tried desperately to free her legs, convinced her end was near.
Then, to her surprise, Hulk bent down and moved the pipe aside, clearing her path. "Bad woman. Hulk doesn't like you," he growled before stomping off, smashing through the walls like a rampaging beast.
Natasha stared after him, dumbfounded. Why hadn't he hurt her? Was it because—? No, now wasn't the time for such thoughts. Shaking herself, she whispered, "Betty. I have to find Betty. She's the only one who can calm him down!"
Hurrying to her feet, Natasha ran toward the crew quarters. Meanwhile, Hulk's rampage led him directly into Thor. The thunder god, mistaking the green giant for another enemy, crashed into him mid-charge.
Thor smirked as he raised his hammer. "A big one, eh? This might actually be fun!"
Hulk roared in response and lunged at him. The two titans clashed in a flurry of blows, their battle wreaking havoc on the helicarrier's aircraft storage bay. Planes and equipment were crushed like toys under their immense strength.
While Thor and Hulk fought, Steve Rogers led Danny Rand to the area where the helicarrier's No. 3 engine had been sabotaged. A group of mercenaries had taken up defensive positions, firing recklessly at anything that moved. Danny, impatient as ever, leaped forward without waiting for instructions.
Steve sighed, flinging his shield into the fray, targeting a towering bald mercenary. To his shock, the man caught the shield mid-air. "What the hell—" Steve muttered as the mercenary's body began to shimmer, his skin transforming into gleaming vibranium.
"Coulson told me you'd come," the man said with a laugh. "And here you are. I'm Karl Creel, and thanks to this vibranium body, no one's my match!"
Creel, better known as the Absorbing Man, had been locked away in a high-security S.H.I.E.L.D. facility until Coulson freed him, turning him into another puppet.
Danny, undeterred, charged forward. His fist glowed with the power of the Iron Fist, and he struck Creel with all his might. The impact sent a loud shockwave through the room, but Creel didn't even flinch. Danny, on the other hand, grimaced in pain, clutching his hand. "Iron Fist? More like glass fist," Creel taunted, his vibranium fist slamming into Danny's chest and sending him flying across the room.
Steve dove in to help, but his bullets ricocheted harmlessly off Creel's vibranium skin. Desperate, Steve activated a small missile hidden in his wristband. The explosion knocked Creel back momentarily, but it wasn't enough to stop him.
"Iron Fist? Captain America? You're both nothing!" Creel roared, charging again.
Elsewhere on the helicarrier, chaos raged in the skies. Ivan Vanko, clad in his Whiplash armor, fought Tony Stark, who shouted furiously, "There's only room for one genius in America, and that's me, Tony Stark!"
Ivan deflected a barrage of missiles with his electrified whips. "You? A genius? America deserves better. It deserves me!"
The Peacemaker armor, piloted by Rumlow, added to the chaos, unleashing a relentless hail of bullets at Ivan. Furious but pinned down by Tony, Ivan shouted, "Nick Fury! Shut this idiot's suit down already!"
"I've tried!" Fury snapped over the comms. "But it's not working!"
Tony's laugh rang out. "Oh, wondering why? I disabled that feature. Your designs are junk, Ivan!"
Ivan roared in fury, his whips crackling as he swung wildly at his foes. Suddenly, Natasha, now suited up in her own Black Widow armor, entered the fray. Her lithe movements and precise strikes put her toe-to-toe with Rumlow.
"I'm sorry, Rumlow, but you're about to lose!" Natasha said, dodging a missile and driving her dagger into a weak point in Rumlow's suit. As Rumlow faltered, Ivan used the opportunity to break free, turning his attention back to Tony with murderous glee.
In the command center, chaos continued as Hill desperately tried to regain control of the helicarrier's systems. Hawkeye, still under Loki's control, sabotaged yet another engine. Fury ducked as Daredevil leapt in to engage Hawkeye in close combat.
Just as things seemed bleakest, Betty Ross entered the aircraft storage bay where Hulk and Thor were still fighting. Betty's calm but firm voice cut through the chaos. "Hulk! What are you doing?"
Hulk immediately froze, dropping the massive wing he was about to hurl at Thor. He turned to her, his expression softening. "Betty!"
Thor, hammer at the ready, gawked as Hulk obediently sat down at Betty's command. "This... this monster listens to you?"
"He's no monster," Betty replied. "And you started the fight, didn't you?"
Thor coughed awkwardly, lowering Mjolnir. "Er… I'll go check on Loki," he muttered before rushing off.
With Betty's help, Hulk redirected his anger toward Creel, who was swiftly overpowered. Hill's voice came over the comms, instructing Ivan to return immediately to deal with a virus Loki had unleashed on the helicarrier's systems. Ivan, grumbling about how unreliable everything was, flew back to the command center while Steve stayed behind to engage Tony, keeping the rogue genius occupied.
As the helicarrier fell closer to the ocean, Loki stood triumphantly in the Quinjet, watching the chaos below. His grin widened as the plane ascended, leaving the battered heroes behind. Unconcerned with the fates of the puppets he'd left behind, Loki's only thought was victory.
"Let's see if the mighty Avengers can recover from this," he mused, his eyes glowing with cruel satisfaction.
