Chapter 19: Chapter 19: Breaking Legacy
Peter adjusted his backpack and strolled into the classroom for his history model exam. The chatter of students filled the air, but his focus was elsewhere. His mind raced with thoughts about his next experiment and the mysteries of Oscorp. He sat at his desk, barely glancing at the paper as it was handed to him. History exam? More like a trivia quiz, he thought. In just 15 minutes, he completed the exam. 15 minutes were more than enough, but he still took 15 minutes to atleast seem human.
He handed in his paper, ignoring the wide-eyed stares from his classmates. Gwen, sitting a few rows ahead, shot him a look of pure frustration, her lips pressed into a tight line. Peter smirked slightly but kept walking. Harry, on the other hand, seemed to bury himself in his paper, clearly trying to avoid any interaction. Peter shrugged it off. Guess some people just don't appreciate efficiency.
At Oscorp, Peter headed straight for Dr. Connors' lab. He found the doctor pacing nervously, his face pale with stress.
"Dr. Connors," Peter began, leaning against the doorway, "what's going on? You seemed... off yesterday."
Connors hesitated but finally relented after Peter's persistent questioning. "Norman," he said with a sigh. "He wants full rights to the ReGen serum. Offered a fortune to make it private and only available to the wealthy."
Peter's brows furrowed. "And you said no, right?"
"Of course I did!" Connors snapped, then softened his tone. "I insisted that part of the serum's supply should go to those who truly need it, at affordable rates. The rest could be sold at premium prices to fund further research. Norman wasn't happy. He told me to reconsider and let him know if I change my mind."
Peter placed a reassuring hand on the doctor's shoulder. "You did the right thing, Doc. Don't let him bully you into selling out. This serum could change lives, for everyone, not just the rich."
Connors nodded, a faint smile breaking through his exhaustion.
Peter headed to his new lab, a modest space compared to Connors' but equipped with everything he needed. As he unpacked his notes and equipment, his phone buzzed. It was a call from Norman Osborn himself. Straightening up, Peter answered quickly, his tone polite.
"Mr. Osborn," he said.
"Peter," Norman's voice was calm but carried an unmistakable urgency. "I need you on a new project, effective immediately."
Peter raised an eyebrow. "What kind of project?"
"This is highly classified, Peter," Norman continued. "So keep a tight lip on this. We're working on something revolutionary.. radioactive scorpions. The goal is to replicate the enhanced abilities of the radioactive spider we... unfortunately lost."
Peter's stomach twisted. He knew what Norman meant. So the radioactive spider that gave Spider-Man his powers was an accident after all, he thought.
"You've been selected for this because of your work on the ReGen serum," Norman explained. "And because I know how much of a genius you really are. This project has to succeed, no matter what. The team has faced... setbacks, and I believe you're the one who can push it forward. Report to the research division tomorrow. The details will be provided then."
Peter hesitated for a moment. This was big..bigger than he'd anticipated. "Understood, Mr. Osborn," he said at last. "I'll be ready."
"Good," Norman replied. "I trust you won't disappoint me." The line went dead.
As soon as the call ended, Peter leaned back in his chair, processing what had just happened. Radioactive scorpions? This is insane. But... maybe it's a good thing. If I can get access to their research, maybe I could figure out more about Oscorp's experiments and make sure no one else ends up in trouble or worse.
Shaking his head, he pulled out his laptop and started making a list. He needed resources to prepare himself for the project. After jotting down some ideas, Peter began calling exotic tarantula breeders, pet shops, and suppliers of arachnids.
"Hi, do you have access to any unique tarantula species?" he asked one shopkeeper, scribbling notes as they talked. "No, nothing venomous. Just something, like a Californian trap-door spider."
Each call was another step in gathering the tools he'd need to understand the mechanics of what the spider DNA was all about. It wasn't just about spiders; Peter wanted to dig deeper into the secrets of radioactive mutations.
Once he finished the last call, Peter leaned back and sighed. His desk was cluttered with notes and open tabs on arachnid biology.
Later, Peter pulled up YouTube and scrolled through his channel stats. The numbers were staggering. Memberships and Patreon donations were coming in steadily, and the latest video's views had skyrocketed even further. He couldn't help but grin.
This channel might be my ticket to more than just fame, he thought. Funding, resources... Maybe even more connections for my research.
He leaned back, his mind whirring. Tomorrow was going to be another step into the unknown. But for now, he allowed himself a moment of satisfaction.
With the rest of the day free, Peter decided to conduct a more controlled test of his regeneration abilities. He hadn't been entirely satisfied with the results from his encounter with The Hand. This time, no distractions, he thought.
He set up a sterile environment in his lab, ensuring everything was prepared for the test. Taking a deep breath, he held a scalpel over his left hand. "Alright, let's see what this serum can really do."
The blade sliced cleanly through the ring finger of his left hand. Pain shot through him, but he gritted his teeth, watching intently. Blood welled up, then stopped almost instantly as the wound began to close.
Within seconds, his finger regenerated, good as new. Peter flexed it, amazed. That's... incredible. No scars, no imperfections. Just like it never happened.
Peter still made sure that the cut off finger was safely disposed, without leaving any traces.
He leaned back, wiping sweat from his forehead. "If this serum can do this, imagine what adding Wolverine's DNA could achieve," he mused aloud. "Not that I'll need it. With rapid adaptability, I'll probably surpass that level soon enough."
Meanwhile, in a hidden underground lab within Oscorp, Norman Osborn stood before a mirror, holding a vial of the ReGen serum. His reflection stared back at him, a mix of determination and desperation in his eyes.
"Hope this works," he muttered to himself, rolling up his sleeve. "I'll be the first to break the legacy."
He injected the serum into his arm, wincing as it entered his bloodstream. His muscles tensed, and his veins bulged. He clenched his fists, waiting.
His body soon returned to a visible normal . His body trembled as the serum worked its way through him, altering his very DNA. Norman's lips curled into a smile. "Yes... this is the start."
