Chapter 19: XIX: Nejire

It had been a while since Nejire entered U.A., and on her first day in the school, she greeted everyone quietly before walking straight to her seat, not saying much. Her past, back in elementary and middle school, had been difficult.

Nejire had always dreamed of becoming a heroine. It was a deep, unshakeable feeling that lived inside her. Along with her insatiable curiosity, this was what truly defined her.

But despite her dreams, the world hadn't been kind. Both, other kids and even adults had often been dismissive. Even when she was just an eight-year-old girl, she hadn't received the kindness kids usually received.

She was used to hearing things like, "Keep quiet," "Stop talking," and "Stop asking questions." It wasn't just her personality that caused problems—her Quirk had also set her apart in a way that made others uneasy. If she had to describe it, she would say it was strong—very strong, in fact.

Nejire's Quirk allowed her to generate energy in the form of powerful waves, which could be manipulated in various ways. With the right control, she could release these energy blasts in a wide range of intensities, from focused beams to wide, sweeping waves of force.

This power, contrary to what one might expect, isolated her. Other kids didn't want to play with her out of fear of being injured, but most were simply jealous of her abilities. As a little girl, she felt awful. Although her parents supported her, things didn't get better. In fact, they only worsened. Slowly, she grew quieter—she stopped asking questions about things that piqued her curiosity, and her once cheerful demeanor began to fade, replaced by a cold, indifferent look.

Sadly, this wasn't the only thing that grew inside her. Being a small girl constantly told things like "You can't play, you're too strong," "Your Quirk is a cheat," and "She'll be a hero without even trying" made her complacent and, over time, arrogant. It happened slowly, but as she grew, she became more and more arrogant about her power.

When she entered U.A. on the day of the exam, she breezed through most of it with ease. The green robots in the test were no challenge, and while the red ones were tougher and trickier to fight, she still passed well, finishing in second place. She thought it would be easy, assuming being number two would guarantee her success. She expected to face the same problems she had in her childhood.

But she was wrong. Her classmates were strong—really strong. Over time, she saw them improve by leaps. Raiden, above all, showed incredible versatility in battle, and his powers grew at an astonishing rate. Tamaki, though slow to start, suddenly began catching up. Even Mirio, who had always had trouble controlling his Quirk, was steadily improving. It was strange how he always ended up naked.

Sometimes Nejire's curiosity about how their Quirks worked reached its peak. But she refused to ask—she feared being rejected again. That, however, wasn't the important part. What mattered was that she realized her world view was changing. She was falling behind. Watching her classmates made her feel like she was being left behind in their progress.

Even today, as she watched them fight, she noticed how Raiden struggled against that kid from Class 1-B. But she knew Raiden. She knew he was trying to conserve his energy, which was why he didn't end the fight instantly. And now, against Tamaki, both of them were displaying incredible feats. Their speed, power, and abilities were beyond what many higher-grade students were capable of.

Tamaki had demonstrated physical strength that Nejire had only seen in some pro heroes, breaking the arena's stone floor effortlessly. His vines, whenever they struck the ground, cracked it. Raiden, on the other hand, seemed like a living weapon, a living arsenal.

When Nejire saw Raiden lose focus for an instant, she thought Tamaki might win. She noticed how Raiden sometimes struggled with control, and now, disturbed, he seemed to have even less control over his powers. However, in the next moment, everything shifted. The control wasn't just restored—it was as if Raiden had started to manage his powers with ease.

He went from being hit to being in total control. When she saw him rise into the sky and channel power into his palms, she felt that his power was similar to her own. But she couldn't have been more wrong. The next moment happened in an instant: she heard it—"Hyper Beam." A concentrated beam of yellow and purple light shot from Raiden's palms at incredible speed, straight into Tamaki.

The teachers, Power Loader and Cementoss, immediately activated the arena barriers. Cementoss quickly constructed a wall between the crowd and the ongoing fight.

The yellow beam hurtled toward Tamaki, destroying the arena's walls and burning through them like paper. But Cementoss did his best to slow it down. Eventually, when the beam hit Tamaki, the boy had just enough time to create an armor around his body. Though the impact sent him crashing into the crowd's barriers, leaving a massive crater in the wall, his armor absorbed some of the force. It was enough to protect him from a fatal wound, but his armor was utterly destroyed by the force of the hyper beam. The winner was clear in the moment Tamaki fainted outside the ring.

In the arena, a deep rift ran through the ground, and broken pieces of stone were scattered everywhere. The destruction escalated rapidly, debris flying in every direction as the blast from Raiden's attack had left its mark on the battlefield. The sheer force of Raiden's Hyper Beam had torn through everything in its path.

That attack was stronger than Nejire's own energy beams. However, it seemed to have taken a toll on Raiden. He was panting heavily, his breath ragged, and smoke was rising from his hand. Nejire could swear she saw a brief flicker of disbelief in his eyes, as if he were thinking, "Really? I had that much power inside me? How I didn't know? " It was a moment of realization for him.

Seeing him, Nejire's competitive spirit flared. She had seen the intensity of the fight, and now it was her turn. Her heart raced with excitement, but there was also a sense of anticipation building in her chest.

After the staff checked on Tamaki and confirmed he was okay, Present Mic spoke up, his voice echoing throughout the arena. He announced a short recess to allow the arena to be fixed, and the pro hero Cementoss immediately set to work. He moved with impressive speed, using his Quirk to solidify the broken stone, filling in the deep cracks and rebuilding the area. Slowly but surely, the destruction was reversed, and a new arena began to take shape.

Once the repairs were complete, Present Mic spoke again, his voice filled with energy. He introduced the two semifinalists from Class 1-A, leaving the crowd cheering in excitement. The anticipation in the air was palpable.

Nejire and Mirio stood on opposite sides, both eager and ready. Their expressions were filled with determination, their bodies brimming with energy, clearly ignited by the intense fight they had just witnessed. Unlike Raiden and Tamaki, there was no hesitation. From the moment Present Mic presented them, both of them sprang into action, launching their attacks without a second to waste.

Nejire was the first to strike, sending two spiraling waves of energy toward Mirio. The blasts zipped through the air at high speed, but Mirio, with his signature Quirk, easily dodged them. His body flickered in and out of view, his movements swift and unpredictable as he darted forward. He knew he had the advantage in close combat, so he wasted no time and rushed toward her, determined to close the distance.

Nejire responded by sending a barrage of energy waves at him, each blast hitting the air with a resounding boom. At the same time, she flew through the air, using her agility to maintain a safe distance, just enough to give her the time she needed to charge up her next attack. She couldn't afford to get caught in close combat—she needed space to work with. As she kept her distance, she waited for Mirio to tire, hoping he'd have to deactivate his Quirk for a brief moment so she could land a hit.

The battle between them became a dance of yellow energy and swift movements. Nejire tried to strike, but Mirio was always one step ahead, evading her every attack. He was relentless, closing in with each passing moment, his body flickering in and out of sight as he used his Quirk to avoid her energy blasts. It wasn't about exchanging blows in this battle—it was about one opportunity, one opening. Every move had to count, as both fighters were constantly anticipating the other's next move. The air was thick with tension as neither could land a solid hit, each one waiting for the other to slip up.

Nejire knew that, unlike the previous fights, this one wasn't going to be decided by sheer force. It would come down to precision, patience, and timing. She had to find her moment, and when it came, she would strike—because in this fight, one mistake could cost her everything, with Mirio, timing was everything.

Nejire quickly devised a plan—risky and painful, but her best chance to win.

She let Mirio approach, deliberately descending to a closer range and firing another barrage of energy waves. Mirio danced effortlessly between them, phasing through the spiraling blasts as if they were nothing. His speed was unrelenting as he closed in, his movements precise and calculated. Nejire, however, let him get closer, her expression shifting into one of feigned desperation as she pretended to panic at his advance.

Just as Mirio was about to land a punch, Nejire raised her hands defensively, one in front of the other. His fist phased through her first hand and came dangerously close to the second. But the moment he materialized to land the blow, Nejire unleashed a spiral wave of energy directly at his hand.

The impact hit with precision, sending a sharp jolt of pain through Mirio's arm and forcing him backward with the sheer force. The blast wasn't fully charged, so it lacked the power to knock him out, but it was enough to disable his arm temporarily. Mirio grunted in pain, his arm hanging limp, but his resolve didn't waver. Narrowing his eyes, he took a deep breath and sank into the ground, disappearing from view.

Nejire nodded to herself, recognizing his move instantly. This was one of his signature tactics—emerging from an unexpected angle to strike with the momentum he gained underground. She braced herself, knowing exactly what to do.

With a burst of energy, she propelled herself high into the air, her hair trailing behind her like a comet. Once airborne, she pointed both hands downward toward the arena. Sparks of energy crackled around her palms as she charged her power to its maximum, her expression one of fierce determination.

Then she released it.

A massive spiral wave of yellow energy surged downward, striking the arena with devastating force. The ground cracked and crumbled under the impact, sending debris flying in all directions. Nejire's strategy had been inspired by Raiden's earlier fight; she didn't want to fall behind or be seen as a lesser version of her classmate.

The arena became a chaotic mess of shattered stone and swirling dust. From her vantage point, Nejire spotted Mirio amidst the destruction. He moved with desperate agility, phasing through falling rubble and dodging what he could. His Quirk, however, wasn't limitless, and Nejire could see the strain building on him.

She didn't relent. Each wave of energy she fired fractured the arena further, reducing it to an unstable battlefield. Her goal was clear: corner Mirio and force him into a vulnerable position.

Finally, her moment came. Mirio, unable to sustain his Quirk any longer, deactivated it for a brief instant. Nejire seized the opportunity.

A spiral wave struck him square in the back, the force of the hit launching him off the crumbling remains of the arena. As he tumbled through the air, the crowd erupted in cheers, stunned by the sheer intensity of the fight.

Nejire descended slowly, her heart pounding but her face calm. She had proven her strength and ingenuity, carving her own path in this fierce competition.
