Chapter 3: Chapter 2: The First Day at U.A.
The morning of Kenji's first day at U.A. High School was filled with a mix of anticipation and nerves. The campus stood even grander than he had imagined, its towering structures radiating an air of prestige. Students in their crisp uniforms milled about, chatting excitedly as they made their way to their respective classes.
Kenji adjusted his tie nervously. The uniform felt a little stiff, but it carried a sense of pride. This wasn't just any school—this was U.A., the top hero academy in the country. He couldn't let his nerves get the better of him.
As he approached the entrance, he noticed a familiar figure. It was the girl he had saved during the entrance exam, her short brown hair bouncing as she hurried up to him.
"Hey!" she called out, a bright smile lighting up her face.
Kenji paused, surprised. "Oh, hi. How's your ankle?"
She grinned, showing off her fully healed leg. "Good as new! Recovery Girl patched me up in no time. I never got a chance to thank you properly for saving me during the exam."
Kenji scratched the back of his head, a bit embarrassed. "It's no big deal. Anyone would have done the same."
"I'm not so sure about that," she said, her tone earnest. "By the way, I'm Ochaco Uraraka. What's your name?"
"Kenji Saito," he replied, offering a small smile.
"Nice to meet you, Kenji! I hope we're in the same class," Ochaco said cheerfully before waving and heading inside.
Kenji watched her go, feeling a little less anxious.
Class 1-A
The classroom for Class 1-A was enormous, with sleek desks and a high-tech design that screamed state-of-the-art. Kenji entered cautiously, scanning the room. A mix of students had already taken their seats, each one more unique than the last.
He recognized some of them from the entrance exam. The confident blonde boy from earlier—Yuga Aoyama—was already chatting animatedly with a tall, muscular student. A green-haired boy was nervously fidgeting with his notebook, scribbling notes while glancing around.
Kenji took a seat near the back, trying to blend in. He had barely settled when the classroom door slammed open, revealing a tall figure wrapped in a yellow sleeping bag.
The room went silent as the man shuffled to the front, his disheveled hair and tired eyes making him look more like a homeless man than a teacher.
"I'm your homeroom teacher, Shota Aizawa," he said in a monotone voice, dropping the sleeping bag and revealing his black hero outfit. "Let's get one thing straight. I don't care how impressive you think you are. At U.A., your worth is determined by your performance. Now, put these on and meet me outside."
He tossed a pile of gym uniforms onto the desk.
The Quirk Apprehension Test
Kenji changed into the gym uniform and joined the rest of the class on the training grounds. The air was filled with a sense of excitement and tension. Aizawa stood before them, holding a small electronic device.
"Today, we're doing a Quirk Apprehension Test," he announced. "Heroes need to understand their limits and surpass them. This test will measure your capabilities in various physical challenges, but you'll be using your Quirks."
Kenji exchanged glances with some of his classmates. A Quirk-powered physical test sounded intimidating, but also thrilling.
Aizawa pointed to a short boy with a round head. "You. What's your name?"
"Minoru Mineta, sir!" the boy replied nervously.
"Mineta, you came in last during the physical portion of the entrance exam," Aizawa said bluntly. "Let's see if your Quirk can make up for it. Throw this ball as far as you can using your Quirk."
Mineta nodded, pulling one of the sticky balls from his head. He wound up and threw it with all his might, the ball sticking to the air and traveling an impressive distance. The class murmured in amazement as the device in Aizawa's hand registered the distance.
"Not bad," Aizawa said, turning to the rest of the class. "You'll all get a turn. Show me what you've got."
Kenji's Turn
Kenji's heart raced as his turn approached. The other students' performances were incredible. Bakugo Katsuki's explosive throw, Todoroki Shoto's icy finesse, and even Ochaco's zero-gravity technique had set the bar high.
"Kenji Saito," Aizawa called.
Kenji stepped forward, gripping the ball tightly. The sun was high in the sky, and he could feel its energy coursing through him. He focused, channeling the sunlight into his arms, and threw the ball with all his might.
A brilliant streak of light followed the ball as it soared through the air, disappearing into the distance. The class erupted in cheers and gasps as Aizawa checked the device.
"Impressive," Aizawa said, his tone neutral but his eyes hinting at approval.
Kenji stepped back, his face flushed with both exertion and pride.
The Stakes Are Raised
As the test continued, Aizawa suddenly dropped a bombshell. "By the way, whoever comes in last will be expelled."
The class froze.
"E-expelled?!" Ochaco exclaimed.
"That's not fair!" another student protested.
Aizawa's expression remained cold. "Life as a hero isn't fair. If you can't handle the pressure here, you have no chance out there."
Kenji's confidence wavered. He had done well in the ball throw, but how would he perform in the other tests? He clenched his fists, determination flaring in his chest.
Pushing Through
The remaining tests pushed Kenji to his limits. His Quirk gave him bursts of strength and speed, but it drained his stamina quickly. He had to pace himself, carefully choosing when to unleash his abilities.
By the end of the test, he was exhausted but relieved. Aizawa tallied the results, and to everyone's surprise, no one was expelled.
"Why?" someone asked.
Aizawa smirked faintly. "Consider this your first lesson in unpredictability. Welcome to U.A. High."
