Chapter 8: A story of someone unknown

The Malaise

A portal to hell under the guise of a disease created by the devil to harm Gods fervent believers.

Originating from an unknown woman of distant origin, the only thing known about her was that she called herself the Messenger and brought with her a religion worshipping the Devils tongues that convinced Eve to bite the apple.

These Pagans before releasing the Malaise were a group of individuals who practiced a foreign belief and built temples, which the king barely tolerated.

These pagans were cast out to the wild areas of the island by the king after a particular incident, a rare edict that enjoyed unanimous support as the incident had far reaching effects.

The pagans didn't like the idea of being exiled although their messenger seemed to see the wrongs in their ways, restricting their movements to the floating islands, building their shrines atop them, large snakes coiled around stone carved blades.

The Pagan Filth disliked those stepping into their unholy grounds, the same as the King and his filth, maintaining this status of exile mercifully granted to them when even death was to easy a punishment.

But just like any filthy heretic filth, the Messenger was only just waiting for a message from her demonic god, closing their doors as they released the Malaise unto our once prosperous and beautiful kingdom.

Releasing the curse unto the populace, the malaise corrupted and mutated both the living and non living, turning them into demons of hell.

Pursing my lips I closed the small book, having read through a good portion of it and summarised it all.

In essence this was a book published by a religious and patriotic individual that loved religion and their kingdom while hating some other religion that worshipped snakes.

It was surprising that the Bible from Christianity was referenced here though.

'You learn something new everyday.'

Recalling how Religion and aristocracy seemed to butt heads in politics whenever they had the chance outside of the rare chance where the Pope crowned a new king or kings witnessed the ordaining of a new pope, it was rather strange to see Religious Fanaticism and Aristocratic patriotism in one book.

But then again, the clash of politics between Aristocracy and Religion were limited to the heads of their respective powers, so it may be possible.

I honestly wouldn't know as I've been on both sides during the fight of influence between the Government and religion

But I was getting off tracked.

The point was that although this was under a heavily biased view which could be taken for a grain of salt as it seemed to additionally pin every single problem of theirs onto this pagan religion that had closed their doors to the outside world.

That didn't mean that I should ignore the words that the book had written.

Was this Messenger actually the messenger of some sort of God? And did they receive some sort of revelation from them leading them to close their doors to the outside world when the Kingdom was infected with the malaise?

I mean, despite not being fanatically religious, having experienced Death and death first hand, I knew gods existed.

And who knows, maybe they really did spread the malaise all over the island and purging them all might find me some clues to stopping this time loop nonsense from occurring all over again.

I for one didn't want to experience all moments of my life in one moment for eternity again.

Putting the books into my inventory I watched as it was disassembled into tiny motes of light and blinked as a new tab was opened besides the screen.

'...Why the hell is this thing still gaining new functions.'

Having gained a map, customization screen and now this thing, one just had to wonder what else could be added.

[That's a surprise for you my child.]

[- Fun]

Reading those words, a certain tiny boy with multicolored eyes that stared at my soul appeared in my mind.

Instinctively roundhouse kicking the clear window floating through the air, despite what the opaque message plaque made it seem it was entirely incorporeal.

In other words, my heel went through it and slammed into the wall, kicking up dust.

"Ack!"

Clutching my heel as pain shot up it, the message board moved up in front of me.

[How violent for a greeting, do all Earthlings greet like that?]

Punching the screen with my fist and feeling the stone underneath the screen warped and twisted.

[I guess not]

[Anyways, I just came here to tell you that-]

Slamming my forehead into the ground to stop the screens tirade, a tiresome voice appeared into my mind.

'I was just about to tell you-'

"What the hell do you want."

Interrupting the God of Fun who certainly had fun messing with my soul until I couldn't tell left from up and right from forwards, the voice continued.

'I just want to help you, isn't that to hard to do?'

"Maybe if you warned me about what you were about to do then I wouldn't be so pissed at you."

Growling, I angrily sat atop the wooden chair besides Castellan's table filled with papers.

Knowing how stupid it was to hate a literal god, I couldn't help myself since every single time that the God of Fun stuffed something into my soul, it twisted unbearably into infinity.

It was honestly surprising that I wasn't lashing out at everything.

*Crack

Scratch that

Throwing away the wooden fragments torn from the table the annoying God of Fun's voice echoed in my mind with an undeniable divinity.

If only their actions didn't resemble that of an evil Gods.

'...I see that you don't like me.'

"Can I even like you after what you did?"

'That is fair, but you were an anomaly, a bug in the works, something that I've never seen in so long as anyone else would've died with their torn apart soul.'

"That still doesn't help your case."

'You may not believe it, but I want to protect this world as much as the next person.'

"You're a God, not really just any other person." Sarcastically drawling my words the God of Fun's voice echoed into my head. "And if you want to protect this world, then why don't you help it personally instead of sending someone else?"

'...Just as there are Gods of good, there are evil Gods who desire nothing more than destruction and the fulfilment of their own desires.'

Furrowing my brows, I leaned forwards in the chair, making the connections in my mind.

"...So you're saying that the moment that you try to save this place they will also intervene?"

'Correct'

"And I assume that sending me here is a way to not have the Evil Gods interfere and make a mess of things?"

'Correct again.'

Frowning I leaned back into the chair, my eyes tracing the lines in the brick work.

"Fuck."

'I'm not having fun either.'

"Good for you."

Rubbing my brows, the God of fun's voice peeked into my mind.

'Anyways, I've consecrated you with my powers, but because of the nature of your soul, most of its functions are locked away until it grows to adapt just a bit more.'

"...Is this some sort of convoluted level up scheme?"

'Partially, but do note that you can unlock these functions whenever you encounter something related to it, such as the lore diary meant to help you record important things and the map.'

"..." Closing my eyes, almost instinctively I held the copper sword in my hands and began to spin it dangerously close to my body.

'I have to go now, I've spent to much time talking to you, good luck on saving the world Consecrated one'

"..."

Opening my orange pair of eyes, I stared at the dirty ceiling.

"...Let's just go to the place that the diary was talking about."

Positively leaping off of the chair I walked towards the one other area I hadn't explored until now, a place through the glowing door.

Stepping onto the stairs heading upwards, I felt my vision twist and tumble before me causing me to hesitate in my next steps.

But just as quickly as the vision of the place in front of me warped, the area became clear and revealed a place similar to the one I had just been.

If anything, the only difference between them was that there weren't as many corpses around.

'And I stand corrected.'

Staring at the pile of corpses lying to the side with their bodies ripped out and their organs missing leaving nothing more than an empty carcass, a blue eyed man wearing a cloak opened their mouth.

"Well, look who it is..."

Chains clanking around on their body, they paused as the gigantic blue vial on their back swirled with an unknown blue liquid.

"Wait, who are you?"

"...That's what I would like to ask."

Bringing out the rusty blade, I spun it around in my hands and stared at the figure staring at me in mild chagrin.

"I'm the collector, and I'm about the closest thing you'll find to decent company around here, now then, who are you?"

"Slade." Briefly answering the Collectors question I asked a question of my own. "What's this place?"

"Bring me the Cells you gather from the others and maybe I'll entertain your questions."

"...I'll have to be honest I have no idea what these cells are."

"Hmm? Do you not have a cell collector?" Narrowing his eyes, he stared at me before grabbing an item placed on their waste. "Take it, it's an old model, but it should do the trick."

Grabbing the clear metal vial out from the air, I observed it, noting that it was decorated in three skulls with open mouths.

"Now then, if you don't have anything else to do, get out of this place and gather some cells for me, in exchange, I'll procure a few useful little items for you..."

Turning back, the chains rattled against the ground as they pulled out a knife from out of nowhere, opening the dead body in front of them.

"Should you stumble upon a BLUEPRINT, bring it to me and I will introduce you to some more... experimental items."

"...Thank you?"

"The doors that way."

Gesturing to the side where a metal door was placed, I stared at the Collector's back before placing the rusty blade into my inventory.

Opening the door, a pair of blue eyes stared at me from within the skull of a lizard.

"...Hi there new guy?"

'Well this is weird.'
